Law: Top 10 Trade Candidates

By Tim Dierkes | November 17, 2007 at 3:51pm CDT

Keith Law, a favorite here at MLBTR and at home home, River Ave. Blues, has posted an article on 10 potential trade candidates off-season. It seems that if anything big does go down this off-season, it will be in the form of a trade, since the FA market is particularly weak. So who does Law have in mind?

The most surprising name on the list is the Blue Jays’ Adam Lind. Law believes that with the next year’s financial commitments to Frank Thomas, Lyle Overbay, and now Matt Stairs, there is no obvious spot for Lind, and he’ll have to win a job in Spring Training — which he could most certainly do. It seems a bit foolish to trade a 24-year-old because of a couple of short-term financial commitments, most notably in the case of Stairs, who will be making a paltry $1 million in 2009. J.P. Ricciardi has done stranger things, though.

Another strange name is Ben Broussard, who figures to at least have a shot at being non-tendered. Law notes his favorable platoon splits against righties and figures he can help a team fill out a position. But since the Mariners already have Richie Sexson and Jose Vidro under contract, and are looking to get Adam Jones some more playing time, there doesn’t seem a logical spot for Broussard.

Law also brings up David DeJesus and Coco Crisp, often mentioned around these parts, as well as Andy LaRoche and, despite the trade of Jacques Jones, Matt Murton.

As a Yanks fan, I have to be at least a little curious at the inclusion of Cliff Lee. With Andy Pettitte’s career at the most a year from ending, and with the further possibility that he’s thrown his last pitch, the Yanks are going to need a lefty starter. Might as well inquire on Lee, as his not-so-stellar 2007 has significantly decreased his value.

Joe Pawlikowski is co-author of River Ave. Blues, a Yankees blog.

Odds and Ends: Clark, Izturis, Clemens

By Tim Dierkes | November 13, 2007 at 2:48pm CDT

First day for teams to negotiate with free agents, always a good time.  Here are today’s odds and ends.

  • Jeff Blair notes that one athlete may still be better paid than Alex Rodriguez: Kimi Raikkonen, a Formula One driver, earns $51MM per year.  No need to debate on whether race car drivers should be considered athletes, I just thought it was interesting.
  • The D’Backs don’t figure to spend much on free agents, because they’re a smart team. Tony Clark wants two years, $4MM, and the team is thinking it over.
  • The Bucs will probably hold onto Jack Wilson this winter, as they’re cutting Cesar Izturis loose rather than pay him $5.45MM.  The Cardinals have interest in Izturis, by the way.
  • Confirming what we already knew: the Yankees will pursue Mike Lowell and Johan Santana.
  • Marty York has a source saying the Blue Jays might pursue Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte.  Say what?
  • Doug Melvin isn’t planning on moving Rookie of the Year Ryan Braun from third base unless the Brewers acquire another "legitimate, bona fide third baseman."
  • Mark Gonzales notes that the White Sox tried to acquire Scott Linebrink and Octavio Dotel in 2006, implying that Kenny Williams might go after one of them now.  Linebrink is going to be a costly sign, as he’s a Type A and I imagine the Brewers will offer him arbitration.
  • Scott Gregor places odds on various center field possibilities for the White Sox.  He thinks they have a decent chance of trading for Coco Crisp.

Odds and Ends: Garcia, Greene, DeJesus

By Tim Dierkes | November 9, 2007 at 1:40pm CDT

With so many rumors, there’s a need for a daily Odds and Ends post to catch ’em all.

  • Buster Olney talked to Freddy Garcia’s agent.  He’s looking at a June return from shoulder surgery.
  • Indians GM Mark Shapiro made an offer on Brad Lidge.  The Astros didn’t even reply.  They did hear back from the Marlins on their Miguel Cabrera inquiry.  The price is seemingly too high for talks to continue.  Peter Gammons says that before the Astros got Michael Bourn, the White Sox pushed for a Chad Qualls for Ryan Sweeney swap.
  • Evan Grant notes that the Rangers have discussed trading shortstop Joaquin Arias to the Royals for Joey Gathright.  They’ve also talked to the Brewers about Tony Gwynn Jr.  GM Jon Daniels needs to have options if he can’t afford Torii Hunter or the other free agents.  Grant adds that the Rangers have already been in touch with Kerry Wood.
  • Jose Guillen declined his $5MM option with the Mariners – that’s no surprise.  So far the Royals have expressed interest.
  • Khalil Greene is under the Padres’ control through 2009, but his salary is going to jump significantly in arbitration for the ’08 and ’09 seasons.  The Padres want to sign him to a multiyear deal, perhaps buying out one year of free agency.  GM Kevin Towers is also posturing that he might use Scott Hairston as the regular center fielder next year, which seems a stretch.  Also, Geoff Jenkins is on Towers’ radar.
  • Ed Wade and the Astros have asked the Marlins about Dontrelle Willis.  However the ’Stros probably do not have the goods.’
  • One way or another, the Marlins will ditch Miguel Olivo.  They hope to bring Yorvit Torrealba aboard, which would take an offer better than two years, $6MM.  The Mets, Brewers, and Blue Jays also like Torrealba.  The Marlins are serious about upgrading behind the plate and will spend some money to do so.
  • Jorge Posada seems set on testing the market, which never bodes well for the incumbent team.
  • David DeJesus is a hot commodity as an affordable center fielder, but Dayton Moore expects to hang onto him.  Maybe he’ll change his mind once some big names are off the board.

Orioles Notes: Crisp, Burnett

By Tim Dierkes | November 8, 2007 at 10:09pm CDT

The always-informed Jeff Zrebiec has a few Orioles tidbits for us.

  • The Orioles didn’t engage in conversations with agents for any free agents during the GM meetings – just trade talks with other teams (about 15 total).
  • President of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said that he’s open to trading with other teams in the AL East.  He just wants the best deal.
  • With that in mind, two Yankees who interest the Orioles are Melky Cabrera and Kyle Farnsworth.  The Yankees could employ Miguel Tejada at third base, if he’s willing.
  • The O’s could have some interest in Coco Crisp, though he’s not atop their list.  But they do need some kind of center fielder.
  • The team’s ears perked up at the availability of A.J. Burnett, even though he makes no sense for them.

Mets Rumors: A-Rod, Kim, Silva, Kuroda

By Tim Dierkes | November 8, 2007 at 9:06am CDT

Plenty of new hot stove talk involving the Mets.  Let’s get into it.

  • First off, there’s the fact that Omar Minaya met with Scott Boras yesterday.  Minaya says he talked to Boras about all the players he represents.  Besides Mr. Rodriguez, Eric Gagne, Byung-Hyun Kim, Kenny Rogers, and Kyle Lohse may be considerations for the Mets.  Indeed, there is some buzz that the Mets could bring Kim in to compete for a rotation spot.
  • So what about A-Rod?  He’d cost the Mets a ton of money, plus the #22 overall pick in the 2008 draft.  It sounds like the Mets may hear Boras out as a courtesy, and even put in an offer they feel is reasonable.  That number might fall far short of what it will take, as did theirs for Daisuke Matsuzaka and Barry Zito a year ago.  That said, Mets insiders aren’t afraid of the full retail price of Rodriguez.
  • The top priority remains pitching.  Carlos Silva, Tom Glavine, Hiroki Kuroda, and A.J. Burnett are on the radar.  On the relief side, Chad Cordero and Jon Rauch could again be in the mix.  The Nats’ are said to have their eye on Carlos Gomez and Mike Pelfrey.  Gomez is a hot topic these days – the Twins want him too, and could offer up Matt Garza, Kevin Slowey, or Scott Baker.

Ricciardi Willing To Listen On Burnett

By Tim Dierkes | November 7, 2007 at 9:43am CDT

UPDATE, 11-7-07: This isn’t really an update.  Ricciardi kind of clarified his comments, saying that the Jays aren’t shopping Burnett.  But he never said they were in the first place.  He originally said if he was blown away, he’d trade Burnett.  The only people confused were those who didn’t closely read his original comments.

FROM 11-6-07: Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi has said something interesting things to the media in recent times, from lying to the public about B.J. Ryan’s injury to questioning A.J. Burnett’s manliness.  It’s not that his actions and opinions are astounding; it’s just odd to see a GM so publicly frank about things.

Today, Ricciardi was upfront with ESPN about the possibility of trading Burnett.  If he’s blown away by an offer, he’ll trade him.  It’s not really a groundbreaking assertion.  I imagine most GMs feel that way about most players.

In Burnett, another high impact arm enters the trade market.  His opt-out clause after the 2008 season effectively makes his contract worse than a one-year deal, as we discussed here.  Jerry Crasnick says the Cardinals, Phillies, and even Orioles are possible fits.  I could imagine the Braves, Mets, Astros, and Diamondbacks expressing interest as well.  Burnett has no-trade protection against 15 teams, so that might require compensation.  He’ll earn a reasonable $12MM in 2008.

Odds and Ends: Fukudome, Burrell, Furcal, Rolen

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2007 at 10:04am CDT

Two of my favorite local blogs have good hot stove posts for us today as part of Odds and Ends.

  • Bleed Cubbie Blue has a Cubs source indicating the Cubs are serious about both Hiroki Kuroda and Kosuke Fukudome.  They could be signed quickly and fill team needs.  This info jives with the recent info from Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald. While Kuroda recently filed for free agency, he’s open to offers from MLB and Hiroshima.
  • South Side Sox has their suggested offseason plan up for the White Sox.  I like the idea of acquiring Pat Burrell and/or Rafael Furcal with Type A draft pick compensation in mind.
  • Curt Schilling was in Philly to watch the Eagles last night.
  • It seems possible that the Nationals could sign Corey Patterson for center field if they can’t get one of the big names.
  • La Velle E. Neal III says the Twins and Red Sox have touched base about Coco Crisp.  He adds that the Twins and Rays have been having conversations, perhaps in reference to Rocco Baldelli.
  • Mike Lieberthal may be on the radar for the Blue Jays.
  • Scott Rolen is said to be open to waiving his no-trade clause, but the three years and $36MM on his contract will be a problem.

Odds and Ends: Fukudome, Boras, Encarnacion

By Tim Dierkes | November 4, 2007 at 9:05am CDT

Let’s kick the day off with an Odds and Ends post.  Daylight savings time means one more hour of rumorage.

  • Bruce Miles loves the idea of Kosuke Fukudome manning right field for the Cubs.  He notes that Fukudome would please both the stathead and old-school factions of the team’s management.
  • Peter Abraham says Yankees fans should not blame Scott Boras for Alex Rodriguez’s departure and demands.  The player still calls the shots.  By the way, Tyler Kepner feels bad about the way things ended with the Yankees and could try to make good by giving a $30MM discount.  Kepner’s article also indicates that Andy Pettitte’s Wednesday deadline for his player option could easily be extended.
  • Haven’t heard this one much for the Yanks’ third base vacancy: Edwin Encarnacion.  Kat O’Brien suggests it.  How about for Ian Kennedy?
  • Yorvit Torrealba’s agent has talked to the Blue Jays and Marlins.  The Jays don’t seem to make sense.
  • I had a random idea – could Michael Barrett be signed on the cheap and then moved back to third base by the Yankees, Twins, or Phillies?

Blue Jays Sign Stairs For Two Years

By Tim Dierkes | November 2, 2007 at 1:40pm CDT

According to ESPN’s Amy K. Nelson, the Blue Jays have signed Matt Stairs to a two-year, $3.5MM deal.  The price seems about right.  J.P. Ricciardi has predicted a quite offseason, so we may not see much else.

Nelson says the plan is for Stairs to mainly platoon with Adam Lind in left field.  That seems to leave Reed Johnson as a non-tender candidate.  The arbitration-eligible Johnson made $3.075MM in 2007 but his a miserable .236/.305/.320 in 275 ABs.  That was a far cry from his ’06 performance of .317/.388/.477.  It should be noted that Johnson had back surgery in April, which probably explains the decline.

Rosenthal’s Latest: A-Rod, Glaus, Cordero

By Tim Dierkes | October 31, 2007 at 11:18am CDT

Ken Rosenthal’s work is a must for any rumor junkie.  Here are some highlights from his latest column.

  • Rosenthal gives his take on possible A-Rod destinations, discussing the Mets, Tigers, and Dodgers in depth.  He tosses out an idea I hadn’t seen before – moving David Wright to left field and declining Moises Alou’s option.  MetsBlog discusses Scott Boras’ sales pitch to the Mets.
  • The Cards want to hire Chris Antonetti, but the Indians don’t want to let him go.  Rosenthal says they may have to pay him GM money and/or promise him the post in the future.
  • Rosenthal has a new I hadn’t mentioned for the Yankees’ third base vacancy, though I believe several commenters did.  That name is Troy Glaus, about whom the Yanks inquired last summer.  There are complications aplenty with Glaus: foot problems, $12.75MM owed to him in ’08 and an $11.25MM player option for ’09, a full no-trade clause, and a steroid connection.  Sounds like Jason Giambi Part II.
  • Francisco Cordero would be priced out of the Brewers’ range if he demands a four or five year deal worth $9-11MM annually.  I assume he will, though the Brewers could afford it.
