Borchard For Thornton Trade Completed

The White Sox sent Joe Borchard, object of many fans' scorn, to the Mariners for lefty reliever Matt ThorntonU.S.S. Mariner has detailed analysis if you're interested.

I was reading the Tribune this weekend, and it had a section where fans explained what to do when you visit U.S. Cellular.  One suggestion was along the lines of:

1.  Order a polish and an MGD.
2.  Heckle Joe Borchard.
3.  Have another polish.
4.  Repeat.

So who's the new whipping boy?

No need for a whipping boy anymore... the White Sox are the champions of baseball!

The new whipping boy is the same as the old one: anyone wearing a Cub jersey.

The Sox added another useless lefty to the mix. It would be nice if KW would quit fooling around and add another quality reliever.

This is the one area that could potentially derail the Sox.

Well, both guys were out of options I think and maybe Cooper can get Thornton on track. They didn't have much use for Borchard. If Hermanson retires or misses a lot of time he'll go out and get someone. I had read that they looked at Villarreal.

I don't care what they did with Borchard but the Sox are going to need another LEGIT relief pitcher and Matt Thornton isn't it.

The sox need another righty, all they have in the bull pen is thorton, logan, cotts, jenks, politte, mccarthy, they need a stud righty for two reasons,
A: Contreas will be traded because the sox can't afford him and that moves McCarthy to the rotation
B: hermanson is gone, and politte is kinda old

The Sox should have already traded Contreras. McCarthy has a chance to be a stud- at the very least better than Contreras. He's younger and cheaper. I'm surprised they ahven't alreayd.

everyones gotta stop complaining about contreras not being traded... its smart by KW not to trade him.

you can't rely on a 5 man rotation to keep healthy all season, and it would only make sense for KW to trade contreras if they had a reliable journeyman in the bullpen (i.e. Glendon Rusch or Rick Helling). but wait, they dont! maybe hermanson, but he's an uncertainty right now.

also, mccarthy is young. spending time in a major league bullpen will not only limit his pitches and preserve his arm, but take away the constant stress of pitching every 5th day and he'll be able to focus more on mechanics and such until the inevitable injury happens and he enters the 5 man.

Why the hate for Borchard? I don't know much about him other than being a huge (size-wise) prospect for the Sox. Is he a jerk or something?

Highly touted draft pick, huge bonus, failure.

Borchard has a huge swing, he either homers or K's. Anyway the bullpen looks solid except for the other lefty reliever. But we did alright with Marte... who really wasnt great... at least not after Manuel used him all up pitching in meaningless games. The Sox should hang on to Contreras for the very fact that he allows Mccarthy to develop a little bit more.

Monger, that link you posted (USS Mariners) is practically the same feeling White Sox fans have for Borchard.

It's funny how they mention Williams trade of Garcia for Reed/Morse (Olivo removed from the discussion) yet forget how he anchored our rotation in the playoffs. He helped the White Sox win a World Series, and for that alone the trade is justified.

Cooper told Williams he picked up something in Thornton's delivery which he believes can be fixed. I wouldn't count on it, but if there's one pitching coach I'd be willing to label Leo Mazzone Jr. it's Don Cooper

"But pitching coach Don Cooper told me Monday morning that he has followed this hurler for a couple of seasons, even looking at tape of him last year, and already sees one change that needs to be made with his mechanics. He seems excited to have Thornton as part of the staff."

New whipping boy = Bobby Jenks.

KW is smart not to trade Contreras yet.

A. He is likely to have an outstanding season.
B. He could get much more for him in June.
C. The Sox don't have any glaring holes right now but that could change.
D. It gives McCarthy more time to develop.

As far as Borchard goes, I never hated him. He's a great guy and I have been rooting for him all along.

However, he is 27 and not getting any better. The Sox have no place for him. It's best for all to trade him.

The only reason people "hated him" is that he received a huge bonus and was highly touted but was never able to help the Sox - a buster.

Last years trading deadline showed teams are not willing to overpay merely because they have certain needs to fill. I recall the White Sox were inquiring about Ron Villone, and the asking price was Brandon McCarthy. FOR RON VILLONE!

Last year is important because if Contreras has a tremendous season up to the trading deadline, and we're in contention, why exactly would we trade him to another contender? Only way I'd consider trading him mid-year if Sox are in contention is a team DRASTICALLY overpaying. Unlike the FA market, where overspending is almost guaranteed, I don't believe a GM will be willing to meet our demands. Would it even make sense to trade Contreras to a contender and risk having to face him in a World Series matchup?

Remember this is his walk year as well. How much could the Sox possibly get midseason for a 40-something Cuban pitcher not guaranteed to remain on the club trading for him? Atleast for Freddy Garcia there was the assurance of him signing an extension.

Contreas, lots of money, but, they can get a lot for him in june, like a very nice shortstop, cathcher, rr a second baseman, and a va top reliver
