Earlier today, I speculated that Armando Benitez could find a new home in no time. A couple of hours ago, I read that the Giants were going to change things up. It's already settled: Benitez was sent to Florida (along with some cash, presumably) for Randy Messenger.
Benitez would appear to step right into the closer's role for Florida, while the Giants will now turn to Brad Hennessey. I can't wait until the Marlins take their next trip to Shea Stadium: I'll bet that's a trip Benitez would prefer to skip.

Question for the Marlins. Why?

" I can't wait until the Marlins take their next trip to Shea Stadium"
I cant either.
I think Armando was just trying to show the Mets fans that there are more interesting ways to blow a save then simply giving up a long ball. I mean, he did eventually give up the longball, but that is his trademark, you knew it was coming, but 2 balks to give up the lead? Thats a new all time low, even for Armando.

Kevin Gregg was doing a pretty good job for the fish, feel bad for the fish...

Marlins have said Gregg is still the closer despite Owens coming off the DL and the trade for benitez. But if he struggles, they certainly have other options.

Gregg will keep the closer role for now. But now the fish have some good depth in the bullpen.
Messenger's fastball is as straight of a line as you can find. It was a good pick up for more depth and a vet for the fish.
Now they just need to pick up a CF and promote Baker from AAA to the majors.

As a Giants fan I don't like this deal. I like that Benitez is gone but was that the best we could get? A middling relief pitcher and still paying over $4M in salary?

As a Giants fan I love this deal. I would have been happy to dispense of Benitez for a Hostess Cupcake. It's worth it for the Giants to pay over $4M to have him NOT pitch. That's how awful he has been for the team.
When I heard the news, I literally jumped around in joy.

I don't know that Benitez was even top 5 on the list of Giants issues.

Benitez blew two saves and was 0-3 as a Giant this year. Your typical, league average closers blow 4-6 games a year. Even Rivera has two blown saves this year with a HIGHER ERA. Benitez wasn't pitching like he had the first two years as a Giant. A few of his games the defense completely failed him. Two balks is shocking but at the end of the night, it's still just a blown save.
Sabean was RIGHT to call out the fans, "media" (Ralph on KNBR), and the team by saying not all of the Giants problems were just Benitez, he wasn't even the biggest problem they had. I often wonder if Giants fans even have a brain...

mmm...Hostess Cupcakes.
Droptop, you are right that Benitez wasnt the biggest problem for the Giants. But, the guy was just a joke. 2 blown saves isnt bad, but every single save situation was a heart attack, with runners everywhere, bad pitching and asshat attitude from Benitez, as he'd blame his teammates when he couldnt cut it. If you watched him at all, you'd understand why nobody wants this guy to take the ball, period. Looking at his stats only tells part of the story..and his stats actually suck as well.
