« Padres Rumors: Maddux, Cabrera, Barrett, Bradley | Main | Elias Rankings Released »
ESPN reports the Reds have exercised Adam Dunn's $13MM club option. This is expected and activates a full no-trade clause for Dunn through June 15th. As Tim noted here, he'll then have the option to choose 10 clubs to which he can be traded.
MLBTR readers were more or less unanimously in favor of Dunn's return. 40 homers at $13MM seems a no-brainer to me. He's a patient hitter and the Reds' most potent bat. At that price, if the Reds do intend to deal him they will find ample value. But don't forget that Reds CEO Bob Castellini told the Cincinnati Enquirer that the possibility for an extension exists.
The Reds were feeling decisive today and also brought back Scott Hatteberg ($1.84 million option) and Javier Valentin ($1.35 million option) while declining Eddie Guardado's option. Both options exercised make sense for the Reds at those bargain basement prices.

Didn't Ryan Howard srike out 199 times this year?
Good move. Gotta wonder what kind of pitching they could get for him if he would waive the no-trade.

Yeah, Howard's the king. Dunn should be traded, extending him would cost too much and the Reds are in rebuild mode; he is more tradeable than Griffey and would pull in a very big return.

Yep..it was sad to see Dunn's historic record go...but it has come and gone...
As a reds fan who has suffered through the last 10 dissappointing years..I'm glad to see the reds pick up the option...Dunn has been an important part of so many of our losing seasons since his inception into the league....
haha seriously...people give him too much crap in cincy...where else in the league are they going to get that much production??
No suprises with any of these decisions by the reds...too bad hatteburg can't still catch..

production for the price on the free agent market*

Bad move for reds they should be trying to get younger!

Hatteberg should be an important trading chip. A 1B-needy team like the Rangers, O's, or Giants could give decent return(they did get Maloney for Lohse).

Right on with Ryan Howard. Thanks.

I agree that Hatteberg should be traded as well...along with any other position players they can find expendable and get value for. With the position they are in they can deal with putting a few utility players and minor league free agents in roles if they can get pitching out of a deal.

trying to get younger? last i checked, Dunn was 27 and going to be 28 for next season. I don't consider being in your 20's as old.

oh, yeah just what the orioles really need. another plodding minimal power first baseman. lets just resign conine while we are at it. I think Hatteburg would be an excellent trade piece with his skills and money but Baltimore?????? not feeling that.
Dunn really does get an unfair wrap. his BA is low, but when your OBP is over 380 for your career people should get over it. I dont know what his RISP numbers are off the top of my head but the low RBI totals are a little curious. I still think he is a bargain at 13 mil and should warrant an extension or a trip to DH land at the turn next year.
