As always, Tom Krasovic has the scoop on the Padres.
- Free agents Geoff Blum and Milton Bradley are not expected back. Blum wanted to return but the Padres are going to pass. Blum is likely to sign with Houston.
- The Padres may try a combo of Scott Hairston and Chase Headley in left field next year. Wouldn't it make more sense to push Kevin Kouzmanoff out there? It'll probably be a moot point, as the Padres are hoping to sign Geoff Jenkins.
- Krasovic tantalizes us by not elaborating on this tidbit: Responding to Colletti's preference for veterans, the Padres are contemplating three-team trade scenarios that would bring them young Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp. In my opinion, any kind of deal that nets the Padres Kemp would have to involve Headley. This tidbit may be more brainstorming than anything.
- The Padres may offer Andruw Jones a one-year, $17MM deal. However Scott Boras is still acting like Jones' 2007 didn't happen.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Padres Targeting Matt Kemp?:
Lol, I really think that the only way that the dodgers would ever trade kemp to the padres is if he was the centerpiece of a package to get jake peavy to come to LA.
Now, before anyone just skims this and decides that I suggest the only way san diego could get KEMP is if they traded peavy for him, that is not what I said. I said kemp would be the centerpeice of a package of prospects to get peavy.

As a Braves fan, let me remind Scott Boras that Andruw's 2007 most assuredly DID happen. Atlanta fans suffered through every at-bat.

You mean along with Broxton, Billingsley/Kershaw and Loney? Yeah, that might work.

Padres and Matt Kemp in the same sentance, just doesn't make any sense.
The only way Kemp is traded is in a package for Santana or Miggy.... I do see the dodgers trading Kemp over Ethier, only because Kemp is said to have an attitude problem...

ATTN: Scott Boras
Andruw's 2007 did happen. Every strikeout, every flyball, every double play. Every single wild swing. Trust me. I was watching.
Just an FYI.

Not sure if Blum fits in with the Astros. If signed cheaply, he could take over Mike Lamb's utility spot, but that would best be manned by Mark Loretta.

It would be sweet to get Kemp but we would have to give up a lot for him. I just heard Blum on the radio this morning and its likely that he won't be back which sucks. Why? Because that guy did a tremendous job the past couple of years when Khalil was injured and when MG disappointed us. He definitely was a key part of this year and last year. The Pads need to sign him back cause there is no one that can play the infield AND LF.
I would love to get Andruw Jones and I think we will after that disappointing season despite what Boras wants. Teams aren't going to pony up a 20 MM/5 year offer to Andruw after that mediocre season (at least thats what I hope).

This shouldn't be hard to understand, even for a Dodgers fan, the Dodgers get a veteran outfielder, Padres probably give up Headley and a 3rd team who we can assume needs a cheap 3B gives the Dodgers an outfielder.
Given Coletti's history it wouldn't be a big surprise

FineHamAbounds - don't forget the cocky little smirk he would have on his face as he handed his bat and helmet to the 3rd base coach after a awful swinging strikeout, like he could not care any less. It's burned into my memory.

I'd be happy if the Astros signed Blum. He's going to come cheaper than Lamb and Loretta, he's a switch hitter which is a nice luxury, and he has experience 1B/2B/SS/3B/LF. He makes for a fantastic utility guy :)

I don't really think Coletti has a preference for veterans. I think he brought in the old guys because he could get them with short term deals.
Anyway, the Dodgers have LaRoche. Doesn't he have at least the same if not more value than Headley? So if Headley were to be involved in the trade it would mean the Dodgers were trying to keep LaRoche, or use him in a different trade. Seems pretty strange to me.
And for Andrew, keep on dreaming; the Padres had their chance, now it's time to rebuild.

umm lih,
R u serious? they had their chance, last time i checked they still had arguably the best staff in the national league, and along with an improving adrian gonzalez and kalil greene, i think the padres should try to sign a big bat, because their pitching is going to keep in contention for the next few years
Let's get a clue shall we.

Andruw Jones (alreast the 2006 and younger version) has absolutely raked at Petco (I think he is hitting somewhere north of .380 here). So at 17 million; there goes our 2007 allowance, its a big gamble but I like him much better than cammy on or off meth.
I heard blum on the radio too saying he might be off to houston, sf or la. I love that guy. He has stepped it up big for us! But I think we want this Luiz guy we picked off waivers from min. to take over the utlity role, and oscar robles.
Also, why don't the dodgers just use LaRoche at 3rd? Getting Matt Kemp would be sick! Peavy isn't goin anywhere after he wins his CY Young Today!

wait...I said that already.
If the Dodgers trade Matt Kemp to the Padres, I'll kill Pierre!

Hey, leave the fish tacos alone!
But seriously, I just want to see some guesses who the third team is.
Here is mine: Marlins.
Padres get Kemp, Dodgers get El Caballo, and Marlins get Headly and insert dodger prospect(s), or even a padres one, here.

"The only way Kemp is traded is in a package for Santana or Miggy"
I beg to differ. Kemp isn't exactly loved by the Dodgers front office, even though he should be with his skill set. If the right deal came by there are actually a lot of players that LA would trade Kemp for.
But the Padres? The only guys on that team even close to being worth Kemp are Peavy, Young, Hoffman, Gonzalez, Greene, and Headley. I'd be shocked if the Pads traded Peavy to LA, i would think they would try and get him out of that division. Meanwhile Gonzalez and Hoffman aren't going anywhere. For Chris Young? Sorta makes sense for both teams, but the Dodgers don't desperately need pitching. I would think the Dodgers would want more than Headley or Greene for Kemp.

Why is Kemp so unloved? We don't need attitude problems at Petco, though MB did pretty well up until that jerk umpire got personal. The Padres don't necessarily need a big bat, just a productive one. Petco just isn't suited for the big bats, ask B. Giles.
