« More Odds and Ends: Kuroda, Pena, Wolf, Percival, Molina | Main | Would You Trade Delmon Young For Matt Garza? »
Jake at Bucco Blog has some hot stove material, in addition to his roundup of Pirates prospects.
The Rays are looking for a shortstop, and Jake hears that they might be interested in Jack Wilson. Jake said he debunked this rumor earlier this month, but there "might be renewed interest." I don't see it. Wilson has had a few decent years, but with over $14 million left on his contract, I see the Rays taking a cheaper route.
Jake is hearing that the Pirates "we're not actively shopping any players" line is just a front. According to his source, the Pirates are playing this game in order to generate better trades later on, once the smoke has settled. Teams that missed out on their top targets might be more desperate to trade for, say, Jason Bay or Ian Snell later on.
If the Pirates are willing to gut the roster, would that include fielding offers for Tom Gorzelanny, Matt Capps, and Freddy Sanchez? Jake thinks, and I agree, that Gorz should be as close to untouchable as you can get. He doesn't think the numbers indicate that Capps can continue his dominance, though his low walk rate certainly helps his case.
Honestly, if Sanchez can fetch anything decent, he needs to be dished. Yeah, he won the batting title in 2006, but he had an average year at the plate in 2007, albeit above average for a second baseman. He'll be 30 next year, and will start getting expensive. I'd hang on to Gorz, Capps, and Snell, as they'll all be 25 and under in 2008.

With all due respect you, Jake The Flake is a MORON, He is 1,200 miles away from Pgh. he has NO REPEAT NO sources that "know" what the Pirates are doing

I wouldn't mind snagging Maholm for the DBacks if he could be had relatively cheap.
He didn't have a good year last year but if I recall correctly his GB% has always been pretty good.
I think he'd make a decent #5 on our roster.

I could see a Maholm for Quentin trade between the D-Backs and Pirates. Then the Pirates could move Bay and just have Quentin slide right into Bay's position. If they could get maybe an mlb-ready position player and a pitching prospect i think they would move Bay. Maybe to the Yanks for Melky and Jeff Karstens, or the Indians for Ben Francisco and maybe Cliff Lee or something

Freddy Sanchez turns 30 in four weeks, not next year. But yes, you're right, if the Bucs can obtain anything of value for him they should trade him...

I wouldn't mind seeing the White Sox make a run at Bay or Nady...

So Sanchez turns 30 in 4 weeks rather than next year, big deal. Next year is 5 weeks away.

I think that a smart move for the pirates would be to talk to the braves about reacquiring brent lillibridge, hopefully in exchange for a pitcher. Now, not straight-p, as I do not think that lillibridge is worth Snell, Gorzelanny, or Malholm in a one-for-one deal.
My reasoning is that the Pirates are definitely looking for cheap players whom they can control, and they are familiar for lillibridge, and were grooming him to be a main cog for their team before they traded him to the braves. He could allow for them to have a nice option at short and at the top of the lineup at a cheap price. That probably is the return that they would be looking for if they traded Gorze, Snell or Malholm, and a young pitcher is something that the braves could defintely use, a young pitcher whom as established that he can be effective at the major league level that is (All three I think have shown more potential than james, and reyes and jurrjens have not really had the time to establish themselves yet.) I would not mind at all taking Lillibridge and James/Jurrjens/REyes and trading them for Snell, as I think he is the most talented of the Pirates pitchers. As for Gorzy or Malholm, I would try Lillibridge and a bullpen arm/lower level arm to get a deal done.

i would love to see a Maholm for Quentin deal with the D-Backs. Paul was actually better than his ERA indicated last season. he was solid as a rock midseason, then had an arm injury. when he came back near the end of the season, he pitched horribly and i'm sure he was worn down. he is a cheap 5th starter that will help most teams.
i would also love to see Bay traded but he's at his lowest value right now. people can't forget he used to be an incredibly productive player.
