« Padres Rumors: Iguchi, Eckstein, Barrett, Bonds | Main | Odds and Ends: Inge, Greene, Pavano »
UPDATE, 12-11-07 at 10:48am: Just talked to a good source on this stuff. He told me Fukudome wants five years, despite what we've read. The Cubs don't expect he'll sign for $50MM for five years, and are offering that amount over four. They're having an internal debate about stretching it to a five-year, $65MM offer. Jim Hendry wants to stop at four years though.
FROM 12-11-07 at 10:03am:
Interesting piece of information from Tom Krasovic today - he says the Cubs are willing to offer close to $50MM for Kosuke Fukudome. They really want this guy and have built their offseason plan around him.
It's hard to believe the Cubs would offer that amount for three years; that would be $16.6MM annually to someone who's never played in the Majors. I could definitely see the Cubs putting out a four-year, $50MM offer though. Who knows how much validity there is to the idea that Fukudome wants three years and only three years.
The Padres have gone at least three years and at least $10MM annually, but it could be more on both accounts. Kevin Towers says the team's offer was final. He sees Fukudome landing in Chicago or San Diego. That might mean he considers the White Sox to be in the mix as well.

I still think something seems really off here then though. Is Iwamura just incredibly underappreciated, because he appears to be pretty decent, or is Fukudome going to be a real geniune power threat? I mean, Hideki Matsui hit 50 HR his final year in Japan, then came over and hit 16 HR in the US. He jumped up to 31 the next year but hasnt gotten more than 25 since. And thats from essentially Japans elite power hitter. Seems like power is the primary thing that doesnt transfer too well to the majors, which is why I get a bad vibe from anyone thinking he'll be anything more than a role player with 15 HR power and a good OBP

Two things for all the Cub fans to think about: someone said 4/$50?? Not gonna happen. If $50 mil is going to bring him to Chicago it might be a 3 year deal, which I think is insane, but why would he take only $12.5 mil per year when he could likely get 3/$42 right now which is $14 mil per year.
Another thing is that you forget that Krasovic wrote this story and it's just the sort of thing that Kevin Towers would let leak so that he didn't look like a cheapskate for not signing him. You guys need to take a step back, not think that your team's entire year is dependent on this one guy who has never played in the MLB, and relax.
As a Padres fan (worried sick that Scott Hairston is the only OFer currently on the roster that will start on opening day) I can tell you that the $50 mil thing is probably more CYA for Towers than anything else. If Hendry does shell out $50 mil it will be for three years and it will be a really bad signing.
Oh, and Z is totally due for a breakdown, and I wouldn't be shocked if he's on that Mitchell Report too.

"Oh, and Z is totally due for a breakdown, and I wouldn't be shocked if he's on that Mitchell Report too."
I'll give you 2 to 1 odds on that. He has done nothing but be completely consistent. Why is he due, because he is a horse, and therefore has to be injured or on steroids?? Have you seen him, he is a beast! He doesn't need roids...and has never had some boost in stats. He has been completely consistent and was in the majors at like 20. There is absolutely NO evidence there whatsoever, except maybe that he is just really good.

How many players have you EVER seen that are as big as Zambrano at the pitcher position? Roger Clemens... who was TOTALLY juiced.
And I said he is DUE to break down. He's a power pitcher that has pitched 200 innings for the last five years and he's only 26. That's a HUGE workload for such a young guy.
You don't need a boost in stats to show evidence of juicing. It's the durability that people are after when they take HGH.
How can you on one hand say that Zambrano has "consistent"ly thrown tons of innings going all out, and not entertain the notion that he is either due to breakdown or benefiting from the quick-healing benefits of HGH or other banned substances?? Pull your head out...

Oh wait... Cubs fan... Sammy was clean...
I forgot who I was talking to. My bad.

It really doesn't matter what we think. Hendry is not going to check with us.

what shots have i taken at anyone on this thread???

Roger Clemens build and Carlos Zambranos are not similar really in any fashion.
Wonder why Cubs fans get into so many arguments? All the nonsensical cubs hating pricks.

007 whats wrong with maybe one guy actually staying healthy? In today's game where pitchers are made of glass it would be nice to see one guy who breaks the trend. Just because Zambrano is durable doesn't mean he is on roids. HGH correlates with increased head and shoe sizes, Zambrano has been the same size his whole career, he has never gotten bigger, if anything he has slimmed down a little. Your assumptions don't even go along with the basic side affects. People back in the day threw for a ton more innings than they do today and stayed healthy, maybe Z is just a tough guy and more like the old school pitchers than the pus*ies that pitch in the league today. I love how quick people are to just assume crap like this because some one is successful.
Also, no one said that Sosa was clean. Most of us Cubs fans believe he did use the juice so your comment about us thinking he was clean is just stupid, stfu you moron.

"Are you joking me? Way to make yourself lose all credibility that you once might have had. Thats just something a retard would say. I guess an ERA that ranks 6th in ALL OF BASEBALL is just bad then, huh? Hey, how was your offense last year???"
You can't really compare ERA's in the NL to the AL. So it is irrelevant where it stands relative to the ENTIRE league. If you want to it is a safe assumption that whatever the cubs ERA was in the NL (4.??) it would most likely be higher in the AL because of the dh.

ESPN Reports: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3151060
Cubs sign Fukudome for 4 years. $ unknown.

To say Z is juicing because he is good and durable is dumb. I'm sorry, but your comment is nothing but...well...dumb.
SoxWin,
Your point just sucks. Yes, it would go up in the AL...great. It would still be in the upper half and they would have a good pitching staff. What is your point? They are where they are and that is 2nd best in the NL!!! That makes them bad HOW???
I hope these Fukudome rumors are true!!!

Umm dumb piece of $hit, the point is that an ERA in the 4's in the NL would be higher in the AL. The other post was attempting to place that relative to the entire MLB and my point was you can't really compare it to the AL because it is going to be higher and would therefore not be in the top 6 of whatever the other post stated it was. Get it? No your dumb you obviously don't.

Thanks for pointing out my RBI error on Iwamura. I knew i was gonna screw some numbers up somewhere along the line.

"No your dumb you obviously don't."
What a freakin moron. Seriously...get an IQ higher than single digits and get back to me. You can say it would have been worse all you want...but the facts are
1. They play in the NL Central. Why are you saying they are bad and comparing them to the AL? Just to make them look worse? Dumb.
2. They were 2nd best in the NL last year, and you try and claim that they are bad. That makes you stupid.
Please get a valid point and get back to me, because the Sh*t that you are spewing is beyond old. What a moron.
