Thats a huge blow for KW...he is hating life right now.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 12, 2007 at 10:23 AM
I'm predicting KW being fired before the AS break, if not before the season. He talked the talk before the off season and just failed, miserably.
Posted by: whitesoxfan424 | December 12, 2007 at 10:28 AM
A huge risk for Hendry not to offer the most money when it's obvious that Fukudome was the cornerstone of his offseason plans
Posted by: Iowa City | December 12, 2007 at 10:29 AM
I hope he does well. I'm pretty excited about this season.
It's crazy how much people read into who's going after who. I didn't even see the Rangers mentioned as a possible team.
Strike 3 for Williams (hunter, miguel, fukudome), is he out?
Posted by: dbldutch | December 12, 2007 at 10:29 AM
if KW or any sox fans thought they would outbid the cubs, they were delusional. if the sox would have went 13 mil, im sure the cubs would have went 13.5 or 14. hendry made it a point that they were going to do whatever it took to get this guy. so, unless KW was being completely ignorant, hes not surprised at all.
Posted by: trober81 | December 12, 2007 at 10:30 AM
I am not a big fan of KW's but it is a bit unfair to grade his offseason performance on Dec 12th. There are still many free agents out there and he does have some trading chips.
Hendry is on quite a roll - I don't always agree with who he goes after but you must admit he usually gets who he wants.
Posted by: cubz23 | December 12, 2007 at 10:35 AM
ooops, didnt see the rangers had the highest bid, but im sure he ruled out texas possibly because of marketing reasons and geography. either or, sox fans shouldnt be amazed we didnt get fuku.
Posted by: trober81 | December 12, 2007 at 10:36 AM
trober,
"The White Sox were not outbid - they offered about the same as the Cubs."
It doesn't sound like its a case of Hendry giving more. It sounds like he just wanted to go to the Cubs...
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 12, 2007 at 10:42 AM
ok, i guess that really wasnt my point. my point was sox fans are stupid if they believed they were going to get him.
Posted by: trober81 | December 12, 2007 at 10:46 AM
This guys is awesome. I love it. All I could hear all offseason was:
"getting Kaz Matsui will help the Cubs get Fukudome.."
"There are no Japanese players on the Cubs, this will hurt their chances on Fukudome"
"Chicago has a small Japanese population"
...as if Fukudome was a small child. Instead, he says "I want to be the Cubs 1st Japanese player"
Posted by: Teetz | December 12, 2007 at 10:47 AM
Teetz, I thought that was pretty great too. Imagine if they acquried Kaz, which takes the luster off the Cubs for the Fukudome and he ends up signing with the Rangers or Padres. Would have been pretty funny.

one thing left off and is still a question.... he wants to be a right fielder.. it was mentioned that he would(could) fill center and DeRosa would be in right? are we still looking at the Pie/Fuld option? If the Roberts option comes true he would be 2B and where does that leave DeRosa?
Posted by: topnotchpromotions | December 12, 2007 at 10:57 AM
The reeason that he didn't sign with the White Sox is because the Sox need him in CF. He considers himself a RFer and that's where he preferred to stay.
Signing him doesn't benefit the Sox if he doesn't want to play CF.
I'd rather have Rowand anyway but it doesn't matter since the Sox couldn't make the AL playoffs with either one of them.
Posted by: Blutarski | December 12, 2007 at 11:01 AM
Yeah, if this report is on the money, it's impressive because it kind of shows that he's confident in his skills -he doesn't mind being a first or a trend-setter of sorts. Cubs fans will embrace him for choosing the Cubs too. Pretty cool.
Posted by: MarkH | December 12, 2007 at 11:24 AM
Sox will be fine. It is December 12th. Three months away from Spring Training and a couple of names still available. Why the Sox aren't in on Bedard is beyond me.....Something about Contreras - Danks - Floyd as our 3-4-5 just doesn't appeal to me. Kenny is stubborn. He has his own personal agenda for the team and so far....FAIL. He is quoted as saying "rebuilding is not in my vocabulary".....I guess "winner" wont be in the Sox vocabulary either. Sox need to start getting younger.....bye bye Paulie, Jermaine, and Jim.
Posted by: Torii_48_Danny | December 12, 2007 at 11:31 AM
I think Kenny needs to start playing his cards a little closer to the vest. I don't think he's a terrible general manager (I loved the Quentin trade, for instance), but he needs to keep quiet about who he's going after, because there's no percentage in making his intentions known to anyone who's not in the business.
Look at what happened with Fukudome, for example. Do you think Rangers fans are as disappointed as Sox fans today? Probably not, because the vast majority of Rangers fans likely didn't know that the team was making a play for him. Sox fans, on the other hand, have been disappointed several times this off-season, because Kenny won't shut up about who he wants, no matter how unrealistic these prospective acquisitions may be. I mean, sure he wanted Miguel Cabrera ... who wouldn't? But why tell your fan base that you're making a play for him when you clearly don't have the prospects to get the deal done? There's no upside.
It looks like the Sox may have to swallow their pride and give Rowand five years. If they choose to go this route, that's gonna be one expensive, mediocre team.

"it was mentioned that Fukudome would(could) fill center and DeRosa would be in right? are we still looking at the Pie/Fuld option? If the Roberts option comes true he would be 2B and where does that leave DeRosa?"
Yes, they are considering Pie/Fuld for center unless they make a push for Figgins. From what I have been hearing, DeRosa might be trade bait for a starting pitcher (Burnett) if the Cubs get Roberts...
Posted by: ben79 | December 12, 2007 at 11:47 AM
I am reluctant to believe Roberts will be traded now that Tejada was traded to the Astros. A six for one deal, loaded with prospects for the O's. It all depends on what McPhail has planned for Baltimore. Depending on how these prospects pan out, if the Cubs get Roberts and the O's get Colvin, Gallagher, Veal....they may be looking good in a few years.
Posted by: Torii_48_Danny | December 12, 2007 at 12:20 PM
****reluctant to be traded because he is a fan favorite and Angelos loves the guy. But with a potential fire sale going on.....I can see Bedard, Roberts, and Ramon Hernandez hitting the road.

"I'm predicting KW being fired before the AS break, if not before the season. He talked the talk before the off season and just failed, miserably."
As a Cub fan looking in, I doubt Kenny will be fired. We all know Jerry is loyal to his GMs. I agree he talks too much.

"Depending on how these prospects pan out, if the Cubs get Roberts and the O's get Colvin, Gallagher, Veal....they may be looking good in a few years."
That is a lot to give up for Roberts. You must mean if they offer those names in some sort of package, not all 3 for Roberts.
Posted by: Oh Boy | December 12, 2007 at 12:51 PM
No, he meant all 3. I think you replace Veal with Patterson and the deal is done.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 12, 2007 at 12:55 PM
To get a lot, you have to give a lot. Like someone previous said...."Soriano has 7 more years, Pie 5, and Fukudome 4." Where does that leave Fuld/Colvin? If I can trade one of them for an impact player like Brian Roberts I would. I am not a Cubs fan, I am a White Sox fan. Baltimore seems to be building around very young arms. If the Cubs are to get Roberts or Bedard I think you have to load up on the arms. Veal and Patterson may be enough to get the job done. But if Baltimore isn't signing Corey Patterson(I feel is a better athlete than Eric), I can't see them bringing in his brother.
Posted by: Torii_48_Danny | December 12, 2007 at 01:17 PM
Replace Colvin with Patterson...I think MacPhail was behind the glut of average middle infielder acquistions that the Cubs went through. But I don't see Roberts going for 3 players.
I know we've talked about it a lot, but I don't think Colvin is in that trade. Never saw his name in print, I don't think...we just substituted him for prospect for lack of a better deal. For some reason I don't think they're ready to part with him just yet.
And yes, I do realize the irony that I speak of as we discuss the Cubs acquiring another middle infielder...

"From what I have been hearing, DeRosa might be trade bait for a starting pitcher (Burnett) if the Cubs get Roberts..."
Mikemeyer, where did u hear that?
Posted by: Jdogg123 | December 12, 2007 at 01:21 PM
Torii,
Fuld/Pie in CF. Both those guys need more time to develop, but create a nice little platoon if you look at the splits and disregard sample size while trying to translate minor league stats...phew.
Colvin had his first year in pro ball last year. He needs time to develop anyway. He's atleast 3 years away (maybe 2.5) from getting a call up. He'll be about ready by the time K-Fuk is nearing the end of his contract.
The Cubs aren't in on Bedard.
I've heard/read that E-Pat is considered the better athlete. I think even Corey admitted Eric was faster...

"Hendry is on quite a roll - I don't always agree with who he goes after but you must admit he usually gets who he wants."
Well its not too hard when you are owned by a corporation and have a seemingly unlimited payroll. Anyone can throw money at players and sign them.
Posted by: SoxWin | December 12, 2007 at 01:26 PM
soxwin,
you are a glutton for punishment, arent you?
Posted by: trober81 | December 12, 2007 at 01:52 PM
Sox Win - there is some truth to that especially in the Soriano deal but I believe it has been documented he reeled in Howry, Lilly, Fukudome and Wood when there were comparable or better deals out there. Plus he also kept his own talent (Ramirez & Zambrano) at below market deals.
Posted by: cubz23 | December 12, 2007 at 01:55 PM
Aw, too bad Fukudome. You're going to hate the United States after you find out what hell that organization and their fanbase is.
I can't wait to hear about the first report of Cubs fans calling him a chink.
Posted by: tsizzle | December 12, 2007 at 01:56 PM
I have yet to see/hear anything that suggests the Cubs are after Bedard, yet his name keeps coming up here.
Posted by: Oh Boy | December 12, 2007 at 02:04 PM
It was brought up because someone mentioned giving up 3 prospects for Roberts was too much and I said if they wanted a shot at Roberts or they got in the Bedard sweepstakes it will take 3 or possibly more.
Posted by: Torii_48_Danny | December 12, 2007 at 02:29 PM
You know, I still think I'd be awfully smart of the Cubs to go right after Josh Hamilton now, unless, of course, the Reds are just asking way too much. That would give them the other left-handed hitter that they want, and Hamilton's more of a #4 or #5 hitter than Fukudome is. It would allow them to move Fukudome to the #2 hole in the lineup, which, with his OBP and speed (and being a lefty), is where he should be batting. Hamilton's splits against lefties included a major drop-off, so, when a southpaw is on the mound, the Cubs could just slide Fukudome over to center and put either Murton or DeRosa in RF for the day. Hamilton carries a risk, but his production was phenomenal in his rookie season. Sorry, I'm just not impressed with Pie. He's not a major leaguer yet. Fuld is also untested, although I liked what I saw from him more than what I saw from Pie.

hahahahahah!!!
Cubs payroll in 07 - 99 mil
Sox payroll in 07 - 108 mil!!!!
You need to figure some sh*t out!
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 12, 2007 at 04:37 PM
Not to mention you offered the SAME THING to the SAME GUY and he went to the north side. Listen, I like the Sox...but don't come on here saying stupid things...
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 12, 2007 at 04:39 PM
I love this as a Cubs fan, knowing that he essentially chose the Cubs over other teams based on the organization itself, not money.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 12, 2007 at 05:54 PM
He wanted to be the first Japanese player to play for the Cubs.....what a basis to brag about! Not because he wants to break the curse, not because he loves management, but only because he wants to be the Cubs 1st Japanese player. I don't get the bashing on the Sox right now....KW hasn't done squat so far....but I don't see rings being put on the Cubs finger either.

Damn double post

Take this for what it's worth, but Hendry was on ESPN1000 today and stated teams ask about the availability of Sean Gallagher the most. I think the Orioles would be doing good for their organization to get Roberts with Gallagher as the centerpiece of a trade. The Cubs won't need to add Colvin to that deal, though I don't think Colvin is going to be that good of a player.
Look, I know a lot of Cubs fans on this site overvalue a lot of the Cubs young players, but Gallagher is really undervalued on here and Hendry's comments about team's inquiring about Gallagher got me really looking at his MinL numbers. He has a very high K rate, has only given up 24 Homeruns and 387 hits in 451 innings. Thats very very good. The guy is not easy to hit. The only thing I can see him improving on is his walk rate, which isn't horrendous. The guy will be entering his age 22 season and could step into a rotation right away.
Roberts for Gallagher/Murton and I think it's a deal. I'd throw in Eric Patterson too if they want, I don't see a future in Chicago with him.
