Pirates Rumors: Bay, McLouth, Morris

MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch jumps into the fray with her own set of Pirates rumors.

  • Jason Bay rumors are flying around.  Langosch mentions Steve Phillips' rumor at ESPN: Kelly Shoppach and Cliff Lee for Bay. Andy Marte could be involved as well.
  • The Rangers have decided they desire a corner outfielder, and moved from Nate McLouth to Bay accordingly.  Langosch suggests the Rangers would send relievers over to Pittsburgh - now that would be a bad trade for the Bucs.
  • McLouth, by the way, is drawing interest from the Giants and Padres.  He's also been linked to the Marlins.
  • The Rockies may have some interest in Matt Morris.
  • Dealing Morris might allow the Bucs to give Brett Tomko what he wants - an opportunity to start.  The Pirates will meet with Tomko's agent this week.

If Huntington could grab Cliff Lee, Kelly Shoppach, and Andy Marte for Jason Bay then that'd be a fantastic move. The Pirates would get their starting catcher for the next few years, a decent starter and a high-risk/high-reward guy in Marte, considering he still has a shot to become a 30 HR hitter. Considering the kind of year Bay had this is probably the best offer the Pirates would get if they decide to move him

Agreed. I can't see the Pirates making off better than that. In addition, they could also decide to move Lee to a team like the Reds or the Mets if they didn't want to keep him along with Matt Morris.

Do you think the Reds or Mets would give up one of their outfielders for him? I think the Reds would be very happy moving Hamilton for Cliff Lee. That would leave the Pirates with a reasonably solid lineup, considering Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen are still on their way.

Hey, that’s the exact deal I said in the Indians/Rats/Bay thread…

Anyway, Marte has to be moved ~ he is out of options and Cleveland would need to keep him on the roster all year. Lee has been in multiple fights/arguemntes with Victor Martinez and has proven to be detrimental to the club; he has fair stuff, but we need to unload him for his change of scenery. Kelly is just too good for a back-up job, he never gets playing time in Cleveland and never will behind Martinez.

I think we could see one more player coming to the Indians in this, but otherwise I think it works from both sides…

i would be surprised if the indians didn't send one of their of along in this deal . they have a history of letting good of's go before they hit stride ...giles , bay , and wasn't sexson at one time an outfielder ? true sexson sucks now but he did play well for the brewers .

uhhh, WJ ~ I'm lost...

Are you talking about the late 90s when a different owner and different GM was trading a couple prospects for a different winning team? Yeah, that different Owner/GM/Team traded some OF prospects for some help in other areas ~ most of the time with it not working out...

...and you included Bay ~ he want one of them so you know. The third would have to be Sean Casey...

Bay for Lee would be a good deal: both good players coming off of bad years. But with Bay being the face of the Pirates, I can't see Huntington making this deal. Including Shoppach and Marte would be too much unless a second player came with Bay.

Joel Sherman from the NY Post offered a rumor of Lee / Gutierrez for Toronto's Alex Rios. That seems fair.
