UPDATE, 12-29-07 at 12:43pm: I'm told the article is the equivalent of an April Fool's joke.
FROM 12-29-07 at 10:38am:
El Vocero, one of the bigger newspapers in Puerto Rico, is reporting that the Yankees signed Juan Gonzalez to a two-year, $2MM deal. This report definitely makes me raise an eyebrow, for three reasons:

Posted by: ivan22 | December 29, 2007 at 11:04 AM
i agree with the joke thing cuz at the end of the article it says "el Día de los Santos Inocentes" the day of holy innocents and then it says congradulations..meaning we have fallen for the prank...or the yankees just signed juan gonzalez XD

Haha...
Juan Gone still has to be kicking himself for not taking the guaranteed 100+ million dollar contract!
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | December 29, 2007 at 02:42 PM
Even Funnier instance of regretting a 100 million dollar contract...
I wonder how the Giants Brass is feeling about the one they handed out just 1 year ago.
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 29, 2007 at 04:36 PM
Despite this site being a decent hot stove and "rumor" repository, this is a pretty irresponsible posting. Thumbs down.
Posted by: hobokenwood | December 29, 2007 at 05:14 PM
That was pretty weak attempt bravesbeast...
1. Juan is a single person. Giants are a multi-million $$ corporation.
2. Giants needed a big name and got one of the biggest available.
3. Giants were able to raise their payroll due to the Nats, so the extra went to Zito...no big deal.
4. Giants have a 90 mill payroll, so Zito's contract doesn't hamper them at all.
5. A last place team needs to overpay FA's to give other FA's a reason to come. It worked, we now have Aaron Rowand.
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | December 29, 2007 at 05:19 PM
Zito4cy, come back around the all star game and let me kno how that Rowand signing is working for you ok? Thanks
Posted by: ozziethesaint | December 29, 2007 at 06:25 PM
Another lame comment!
So the first 1/2 season of a 5 year contract shows if a player is worth it?
Yeah, it never takes a player a little time to adjust to a new team and division. Not to mention that he will be up against the best pitching division in the NL.
I think I'll stick with a more knowledgeable approach.
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | December 29, 2007 at 06:54 PM
How was it irresponsible? I expressed extreme incredulity from the moment I posted it.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | December 29, 2007 at 09:20 PM
Tim,
He probably read it then ran and told all his friends its true. Then they roasted him for it...now he's crying...
lol
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | December 29, 2007 at 09:56 PM
sorry zito4cy but the Rowand signing was another poor one. Given their current roster, especially in that division, picking up a slightly above average CF isnt going to do a lot of good. Just because some extra payroll exists, doesnt mean you should just throw it at someone. Would have been more wise to sell off as much of the old crap as possiible ala the Matt Morris trade. Then completely rebuild behind Cain and Lincecum. Use some of the extra cash to draft some of the high bonus seeking players in June.
Posted by: curse_ended | December 29, 2007 at 10:01 PM
Curse, I disagree with your disagreement...lol
Rowand was one of the top FA's available, not "someone". He also brings a hard nosed, gritty attitude to the locker room that Barry never had.
While I agree the Giants should sell the old guys...there has to be a buyer. Who the hell wants Ray Durham or Rich Aurilia?
Ray, Rich and possibly Omar come off the books next season, so there is more money to spend.
Posted by: zito4cyyoung | December 29, 2007 at 10:39 PM
i agree and disagree. Rowand mightve been one of the top free agents available but that doesnt mean hes good..he just had a breakout year and got a huge contract. Although his grit is worth some of the money,i doubt hes going to be the kindof offense the giants project him to be. Expect .270, 18 HRs, 70 RBIs
The Juan Gonzalez deal is def a fake.
You cant blame the Giants for trying to get an ace in hopes of getting to the playoffs in a weak division that is dominated by a team (Padres) who has the best pitching in baseball. Even though you couldve predicted the Zito Collapse.

It's just so far-fetched, why post it at all? Especially since the correction came just two hours after. Didn't mean to offend though. The site is great.
By the way Zito, I'm not a Yankee fan, so it makes no difference to me either way.

hoboken, its a good thing you werent around for the Carlos Lee april fools joke a couple of years ago. That would he really pissed you off. Lol. hoboken, you also have to realize that Tim probably comes across a lot of far fetched stuff every day, its a rumor site so almost all of it is not a sure thing at the time he posts it. It seems silly now, but it might have seemed silly last year when we heard a similar story about how Sammy Sosa had just signed a contract with Texas, so you never know. There are going to be errors though when you have to pick and choose the "quality" rumors from the really fake ones. Not a big deal at all imo. I dont think any Yankee fans were jumping around all excited thinking they signed Juan Gone only to realize within an hour that their dreams had been smashed by a cruel spanish joke :).
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 30, 2007 at 12:55 PM
I see what you're saying...basically I will post any rumor that came from a legitimate newspaper, if only because I'll get a bunch of emails asking about it if I never mention it. So I'd rather post and express skepticism if I feel they're shaky.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | December 30, 2007 at 04:02 PM
Tim,
Understood, thanks. Again, nothing personal. I enjoy reading the site.
nrmax, I think if that signing were true, I'd DENY being a Yankee fan :)
