| Nick Swisher Traded To White Sox »
By Tim Dierkes [January 3, 2008 at 12:54pm CST]
The Boston Globe ran a chat with Peter Gammons today, and some good hot stove material came about.
- Gammons believes the Rangers or A's could go after Coco Crisp if he's not dealt to the Twins. He notes that "the A's think he's the best CF in the game right now," and that Billy Beane could acquire him to flip him.
- He says the Mets are currently trying to build up inventory to trade for Johan Santana, and that might be why Bill Smith hasn't pulled the trigger on anything yet.
- Gammons believes the Red Sox will exercise Manny Ramirez's $20MM options for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He notes that Manny is getting himself into phenomenal shape this winter.

Do any one knows what he means by building up inventory ?

Why the heck would the Rangers want Crisp, they got Hamilton to play CF.

Is it just me or does it seem that outside of Boston and New York, Gammons has been mailing it in?

There's no reason the Rangers would want Crisp anymore. We've got a glut in the outfield at the moment with Bradley, Hamilton, Byrd, Catalanatto, Murphy, Cruz, Botts, etc.
Not everyone on that list will make the team, and adding another outfielder in the mix just complicatest things.

Dee Edge I was wondering about that too. "Building up inventory" WTF Peter Gammons? Lets back up what we say a little huh Peter.
Posted by: coolpapabell | January 03, 2008 at 01:57 PM
Building up inventory means exactly what we have been hearing all along: the Mets want Santana but they do not have the prospects to get it done, so if they were so inclined they might make another deal to build up inventory so they could get him.

What guys on their roster aside from Heilman, can they afford to give up? They can't trade anyone who could produce desirable prospects for the Twins. If they do, please tell me?
They certainly can't trade a prospect to another team if they want to complete a trade with the Twins.
Posted by: coolpapabell | January 03, 2008 at 02:25 PM
Exactly papabell. If they trade any one of their players that can bring in a guy that can turn the Santana sweepstakes in their favor, then it would seriously take away from the motive of getting Santana because you would have to imagine it would need to be Reyes, Wright, or Beltran that could get the kind of prospect(s) that you offer for Johan. Peter Gammons is senile. All of the ESPN guys are.

Hence the word try. No one said it was easy or even likely for the Mets to get Santana. All Gammons said was that they were trying, which is just another report that the Mets are still interested in Santana. He did not report a specific for that assertion primarily for the reasons you are pointing out, the Mets will be hard pressed to increase their inventory, but that does not mean they are not allowed to try, and if they are attempting such a move, even if it is unlikely to work, then it is at least newsworthy compared to other Santana "news" of the past week.

If they can turn Heilman or even a Pelfry or a Humber into a 3B and MI prospect that substantiates their trade much much more. Of course, one wonders why the Twins couldn't just spin off whatever players they receive from the Mets for the players they covet. The only reason I can think of is the Twins already have so many AAA/ML pitching prospects that each one's value is diminished...

Peter is as unbiased as George Mitchell is.

Walkoff, you are right in that the Mets can try, and that he is reporting it. But this sounds like useless info, that is be more false than true. I would be more accepting of this info if he had suggested that the Mets are trying to work a third team in. I like Gammons, but this is weak.
Posted by: coolpapabell | January 03, 2008 at 02:47 PM
"But this sounds like useless info, that is be more false than true."
What exactly is false about what he is saying? It is not very useful but you have to remember he is answering a question. This was not intended on his part to be some breaking news story. He simply said that Smith may be waiting to see if the Mets efforts go anywhere as a response to a question about the way smith is handling the negotiations.
"I would be more accepting of this info if he had suggested that the Mets are trying to work a third team in."
So you are contradicting yourself by saying you would prefer he presented info that was actually false or that he could not backup?
As far as I can tell you are taking Gammons comments out of context and bashing him for them largely because you want more info about the Santana negotiations. That is fine, who does not want more info about them but bashing a reporter for not being able to provide what does not exist during a fan chat containing several questions about music does not make much sense to me.

thanks for answering my question . they can afford to trade heilman if they sign another releif pitcher like dotel or someone like him . but in order for the mets to get santana they gonna have to gut there whole system thats what the twins want them to do any way .
i wouldnt do it then you gonna have to give him 160 mil cmon thats a lot
Posted by: Dee Edge | January 03, 2008 at 03:08 PM
It would have been nice if Gammons could have given us some sort of example of how they could possibly pull something like this off. Im with Coolpapabell, sounds like he just made it up. If the Mets are trying so hard to find more prospects and this is what is possibly keeping Bill Smith waiting then why are we just hearing it now. Seems like Gammons is reachign for something that isnt there.
Posted by: nrmax88 | January 03, 2008 at 03:08 PM
I dont understand why Heilman would be a piece that the Twins would want, even as a throw in. He is gone in one year I believe, what would be the point of taking him. At this point I would find it funny to just see Santana injure himself cooking bacon or something and never pitch again.
Posted by: nrmax88 | January 03, 2008 at 03:10 PM
Santana is not allowed to hurt himself cooking bacon, getting in/out of the hot tub, or getting drunk and blaming it on the dog until after the Twins trade him.
Max if he gets hurt on bacon, we are coming looking for you... on the twins or as prospects he is a big part of the Twins Future.. so Max dont jinx him. :-)

Everyone knows that Gammons just cares about the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets. I don't even read any of his stuff (or most of the ESPN "experts" for that matter) anymore because they just overrate those teams' players while underrating players that try hard and are more deserving.
Posted by: TheGrinch | January 03, 2008 at 03:48 PM
There is nothing new to report so every reporter is grasping at straws trying to come up with a new angle on an old story. Everyone wants to know what is going on, but the truth is I'd rather hear nothing than someone making stuff up. We know the Mets are involved, but what proof do we have that they are "trying to build up inventory" -- do you really thin Smith is on the edge of his chair waiting for Omar to find a prospect he forgot about under the couch cushion?

Metsblog has a tidbit on the possibility of Reyes being included in a deal for Santana...

Walkoff, when I said, "I would be more accepting of this info if he had suggested that the Mets are trying to work a third team in." I mean that it would be more believable. His comment sounds absolutley odd and not consistent with what has been written regarding the Johan situation. If he is going to say something that defies logic then well, give me a scource then. I haven't read anything that would suggest that Gammons is near the mark on this. His comment did not make sense. Alright, so he didn't write, it was a chat in which he was talking out of his you know what.
Walkoff, I am sorry for the confusion, and I will try to be a bit clearer next time.
In short Gammons is making no sense here.

Rumor out today that the Dodgers are back in the hunt for Santana and have offered four major league ready pichers including James McDonald and J Meloan and two others to be named that are not Billingsly (Hull/Broxton?) and the deal also includes Juan Pierre with the Dodgers paying 3M/yr of his contract. The Dodgers are also willing to meet the 140K/7yr contract demand for Santana.

Where'd the Dodger rumor come from?

OldD099erFan -
If you're going to post something completely off the wall like that, you better back it up with something. Sounds as realistic as the 3-team trade that had us getting Dan Haren...
