« Latest On Bedard/Mariners Talks | Main | Needs and Luxuries: Cincinnati Reds »
According to Buster Olney, Troy Glaus told J.P. Ricciardi several months ago that he'd like to be traded. Apparently he really wanted to get away from artificial turf.
Olney says Ricciardi made no promises, and set about finding good value for Glaus. Glaus had wanted to play for St. Louis for years, and Scott Rolen's rift with Tony La Russa created an opportunity.

Rolen would be a great help for the Jays if he could actually come close to playing a full season.
112, 142 and 56 games played in the last 3 seasons

Give Glaus credit- he QUIETLY asked for a trade and didn't goto the media.
Also, it sounds like if he hadn't got the trade that he wasn't going to cry like a baby if he didn't get it.

I'm curious as to why Glaus wanted to play in St. Louis. Anybody know?

I completely agree, altho it could be the shabby baseball reporting done in Toronto.
I suspect however since its the off season there wasn't much need to kick a fuss up about it. If it went into the season and his foot or knee's started hurting from the turf he likely would kick up a fuss.
Who could blame a player for that tho, If you have a job and the place you work causes your body physical damage, wouldn't you want to leave as well?

Nothing concrete, but it seems that many former Angels, circa 2002 WS champ team, like going to St. Louis - - Kennedy, Eckstein, Spezio, --hell even Weaver - - and now Glaus. He's a strike out guy who might benefit from having Pujols in the lineup (who wouldn't?) --- might see a little more strikes, and put a few more in the bleachers. Like Toronto, minus the taxes, St. Louis is a GREAT baseball town with good fan support yet many players can play rather anonymously. Or maybe he just likes Budweiser. ALOT.

His mom lives about 2 hours away from St. Louis. That could have been a factor in him wanting to play for STL.

That's pretty much what I figured. I knew it was either that or JP knew something we didn't about Glaus' health and since the physical was clear... It was pretty obvious that Glaus probably wanted to be traded.
No hard feelings though, as it's not like Glaus is leaving because he hates Toronto or anything. He wants to get off the turf. Fair enough.
Hopefully he's healthy for the Cards and can continue his career.

Jeff Blair, from the Globe and Mail is the main inside man on the Jays and he spoke very highly of Glaus this season. The guy played through a lot of pain and he even volunteered to plug a hole at shortstop at one point this seaon, even though he hasn't played there since college.
Blair says, rightly, that it's a very rare sort of $11,000,000 ex-All Star, ex WS MVP who does that.
Most of Toronto wishes him better health and good luck.
Now can we pleeeease renovate the SkyDome???

Good catch, 92-93. Blair must have meant "last season" not "this season".
