« Mayo On Fernando Martinez and Johan Santana | Main | What Might've Been: Beckett And Lowell For Blalock And Danks »
Here are some links I've rounded up for today. I like the analogy that the Odds and Ends posts are like a pack of baseball cards. You never know what you'll get, and sometimes there's gum.

I know this Santana situation has been tough on all of us, but I think MetsBlog has long passed the status of rumors and can more reasonably be categorized as bad fiction at this point. Cerrone clearly has no sense of reality. The Twins firing a long-time organizational employee after a year or three as GM? The Yankees putting Wang into a Santana deal? This is nonsense.

Two problems with the list:
Cole Hamels is one of the greatest putchers in the game, sure; but, any pitcher pitching in that park can't be ranked number 5. I mean, he could give up 30 HR this year in that band box.
Felix Hernandez should be in the top five. If he didn't get injured last year, he would've won the Cy Young. I could just be saying that cause he was on my fantasy team last year and I passed up trading him for A-Rod in April. Still, since he moved away from the spiked curve ball this year he probably won't get hurt (Hopefully). He's one of the, possibly the best pitcher in the game!

other than that, good list

Dustin McGowan is too low... No love for the lambchops!

Didn't read the comments. Sorry!

Tim Hudson is way too low. Fausto Carmona too. Cain and Lincecum are very iffy.
Posted by: Land-Man | January 15, 2008 at 05:28 PM
Maine is a little too low too. But I'll admit, until Maine proves that he's one of the top 15 pitchers in the game today (like he is), Hudson should be ahead of him.
BTW, I just updated my TypeKey profile page

Sorry, but I'd take any of Oswalt/ Harang/ Felix/ Verlander/ Halladay/ Chris Young long before I'm taking Kazmir.

Rich Hill 15??? are you on crack? way, way too high.
Posted by: curse_ended | January 15, 2008 at 07:24 PM
This isn't "best pitcher in baseball", its fantasy rankings. Rich Hill is a high K pitcher in front of a good defense playing on a strong offensive team. He makes sense at 15. Its like Juan Pierre; we all know he sucks but he's also a top 25 fantasy hitter because of the SBs, high AVG and runs. Separate the two.

Is cerrone retarded? the whole point of the yankees picking up johan is to upgrade their rotation. forfeiting a chien ming-wang would make this a fairly stagnant trade as wang is a solid starter with MLB experience. I think cerrone should be fired for even making up something this retarded. lose 2 good starters for one great one? doesn't make sense to me.

"I think cerrone should be fired for even making up something this retarded. lose 2 good starters for one great one? doesn't make sense to me."
Who's going to fire him? It's his own freakin' blog. Sheesh! Besides, if losing two good starters for one great one doesn't make sense to you, then you should stop bustin' on the Yanks for not wanting to trade Kennedy and Hughes for Santana.
Anyway, it should be obvious that Cerrone's idea would be for the Yanks to give up Wang instead of Hughes, not in addition to Hughes. But this is just Matt's Mets fan paranoia about the Yankees kicking in, though. I doubt that Smith is going to reach a point of such desperation that he'd do a purely PR-driven trade.
More importantly, Matt needs to do a little fact checking. Wang will definitely not be making the minimum this year. He's a super-two and will probably get $4-5M in arbitration this year, and something close to $30M over the next four seasons before he hits free agency (assuming continued health and effectiveness). Wang probably has a good bit of trade value to a lot of teams, but the Twins are close to the bottom of the list of teams that would be interested.

cerrone is desparate to create topics to discuss on his board.
the wang notion is retarded. wang is untouchable. he's worth more than johan.
less mileage. almost equally effective. upper 90s heat. top pitcher in the game and he isnt even fully developed yet. durable, nasty stuff, international appeal....he's absolutely untouchable.
Posted by: bsox21 | January 16, 2008 at 01:06 AM
while I agree that trading Wang doesnt make all that much sense, to say he is worth more then Johan is absurd.
Posted by: curse_ended | January 16, 2008 at 07:00 AM
No, it isnt. Actually, who wouldnt take four seasons of Wang over one of Santana?
Posted by: nrmax88 | January 16, 2008 at 07:23 AM
Mets Blog has become a total joke. The fiction there has been actually pretty funny.

Good to see someone throw Smoltz in with the elite starting pitchers...I think he's more than proved it since he's returned from the pen.
Although I don't agree with how low you rank Hudson.

Hey Tim,
I'm curious why you placed Jason Bergmann on the list ahead of Shawn Hill, who will be the Nationals' Ace this year. Is it the injuries? Both pitchers were injured last season, and Hill had surgery to fix his problems, which he's been to have recovered from already...
Just curious.

*been SAID to have recovered from already...
oops.

Smoltz's Beard:
Since it's a list of top FANTASY pitchers, Huddy would be down the list a little because he doesn't always rack up K's like other pitchers, so he doesn't earn as many points. He'll have a few of 10-13 strikeout games in a season, but he's not exactly a consistent strikeout pitcher a'la your namesake. I actually had him on one of my fantasy teams last year and he was good for innings and wins, but those 200+ K guys will always earn more points in a fantasy roster. He's GREAT to have on a real team, but he's only GOOD on a fantasy team.

Mac u should be fired from life, because obviously u have read none of my other blogs. I always said that the yankees should hold what they have, and Hughes and Kennedy is ridiculous for santana. The yankees made their best possible decision by letting cashman do his job and withdrawing their santana offer. I'm a die hard red sox fan as i know i have made blatently obvious, but being from Jersey i happen to know alot about the yankee farm system as i go to yankee games all the time. I have said from day 1 that the smartest thing they can do is forgo 2008, incorporate joba hughes and kennedy into the rotation, let them work some innings and see what they are capable of, and if they do decide to make a blockbuster trade because they haven't reached their potential yet, save it for 09 with the opening of the new stadium. notice Mac, not one other person disagrees with what i've said. Wang as Bsox put it is "untouchable". I love my red sox, but if your going to post on a blog like this mac u have to be a little less biased, and read peoples previous comments before making retarded notions like this one.

"notice Mac, not one other person disagrees with what i've said"
Funniest thhing I've read in a while. People disagree with you all the time. No shame in that. Lighten up and learn how to take a joke, dude. Also, if you are going to post on a blog like this, maybe you should stop calling everyone you disagree with biased or a retard or both. There's nothing biased about anything I said; I was just trying to translate Cerrone's paranoia for you, since you obviously didn't get it.
It's also pretty funny that you and some other people seem to think that passing on Santana means the Yankees won't be competitive in 2008. They are still going to score a ton of runs, and their pitching will be better than it was in 2007, even with Pettitte and Mussina a year older and the kids having their innings limits and growing pains. How does that add up to "forgo 2008"? Sounds pretty biased. Dare I say, almost retarded.

FineHamAbounds - you might be right. For some reason I thought Huddy significantly improved his strikeout total, but it looks like it actually decreased. I still like him though!
