| Royals Sign Tomko »

It's up to an impressive 5.7 degrees where I am, but I still don't think I'll be going outside much today. Hence, some odds and ends.
- Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald believes Eric Hinske might sign with the Diamondbacks this week. The 30 year-old former ROY has a career line of .255/.336/.434, with much better work against righties.
- John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus says the Red Sox are interested in the Pirates' Ryan Doumit. However Perrotto says the Bucs are reluctant to trade the versatile Doumit, who turns 27 in April. Only past Doumit rumor I can find was from Will Carroll in May of '06, saying he and Oliver Perez were being dangled to the Phillies.
- Perrotto believes the Royals could sign Bartolo Colon if he'll take a one-year deal; that may be true for several clubs. Paul Hoynes reports that the Indians watched Colon pitch, but weren't impressed with his sub-90 velocity. Hoynes says Kris Benson will have another throwing session and the Tribe will be in attendance.
- According to Marc Topkin, the Rays are talking with lefty reliever Trever Miller. The two sides haven't agreed on the term yet.
- Padres GM Kevin Towers commented about the team's rejected long-term overtures toward shortstop Khalil Greene. Towers brought a three or four year proposal to Greene but does not expect anything to get done. He stated Greene's possible desire to be on the East Coast as a factor.
- Vince Gennaro does an economic analysis of the Johan Santana rumors, indicating that the acquisition makes the most sense for the Mets.
Does this hesitancy to sign long-term fuel any trade rumors for Khalil Greene? Do you see the Angels-Padres matching up somehow? I will throw out Juan Rivera, and Erick Aybar. Thoughts?

It could mean a trade, but I think it could also mean that Towers is just a smart GM a realizes that signing an injury-plagued player long-term is not a smart move...

I think the Cubs would be the best fit. He could be happy, there's the Buhai Temple here :)

hey Tim What do u think the Pirates would want from Redsox for Doumit?

I heard at one point Chad Cordero for Greene 1-1 but Towers shot that down. Maybe that will be revisited, perhaps with a shortstop thrown in from the Nats side (Guzman or Lopez).

Bowden actually did propose Lopez & Cordero for Greene. That was the deal KT shot down as Cordero has little value with the padres ability to churn out relievers. This trade could be revisited if the Padres decline Giles' '09 option, which is a definite possibility. At that point, the Nats will have an excess of starting outfielders with Pena, Kearns, Milledge & Dukes. KT could go after one of them, while signing Rafael Furcal to replace Greene. That's what I'm hoping for next off-season: a lineup of Furcal, Antonelli, Gonzalez, Kouzmanoff, Edmonds, Kearns & Bard.

With Headley in there too...

I still think KT would like to get an extension done with Greene, but he is still being realistic in that Greene may want to play closer to his hometown when he hits Free Agency. I don't believe his health is that much of a concern because his ability as a clutch hitter out ways his health concerns.

If Greene were to sign with another team when he becomes a FA, these are the teams that will probably pursue him the hardest; the Nationals, Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, Cubs, Blue Jays, Twins, Royals. If he chooses his hometown team then he will probably sign with the Pirates.

Keep drinking deeply. Jim. Edmonds. Is. Done. He'll be lucky to finish the season THIS year.

i think you'd be more likely to see willits and aybar.. i think the pads were looking for a young leadoff hitter- at least that's what i heard.
in any case, i'd love to see that happen. Greene would do well in Anaheim, and that would make for a permanent move to 3B for Wood, who'll be the starter next year. plus, batting greene either in the 3rd slot in front of Vlad of in the 6th slot behind Anderson would add that much more depth and protection

KC signed Brett Tomko...
Looks like Colon is going somewhere else.

The only thing about the Angels trading for Greene would mean that they would be blocking Erick Aybar then. And he is starting the year at AAA along with Wood.

Bartolo should go to Japan.
Posted by: gogopalehose | January 20, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Maybe he could pitch to Mike Piazza there?
There would be something sad about seeing Piazza play in Japan, after such an amazing career, but it also would be kind of neat seeing a guy who just loves the game finishing off his career in Japan, where he could be sort of a big deal over there for a year or two. Maybe he can re-unite with Bobby V, who is something of a celebrity in Japan from what I hear.

Piazza would be "Mr. Baseball" right down to that Freddy Mercury mustache

does Piazza in TEX make any sense?

Here's a darkhorse for Greene. The Red Sox. There was a rumor earlier this off season about a Lugo,Crisp sawp to CHW for O Cab. Its reasonable to think given Theo and Towers history a call could take place. Greene for Crisp and Lugo is resonable for both sides. Greene hitting in a hitter friendly ball park in stead of the field in SD, could easily hit 30 HR. Plus Greene wants to be on the east coast. SD would get a decent CF, and a servicable SS.
