« Angels, Orioles Eyeing Barmes | Main | Braves Interested In Juan Rivera? »
TUESDAY: Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has an update to Cafardo's Yankees/Fuentes item. Renck says that while the Yanks have scouted Fuentes, Rockies' GM Dan O'Dowd says there's "zero chance" of a trade at this time. I imagine he wants to see a healthy Luis Vizcaino before considering it.
MONDAY: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe checks in with plenty of rumors in his Sunday column.

There is no need for Lohse. Giants have an abundance of pitching...
Zito
Cain
Lincecum
Correia
Sanchez/Misch - Loser remains a starter in AAA
They also have Hennessey who can spot start.
We need someone that can hit the ball.

maybe they sign lohse for cheap and get crede, that would make sense. the giants need to trade the pitching for bats. there pitching is overvalued because of the ballpark, so they should take advantage of that. heck lohse might even produce in that park

One of the two most important moves for the Yankees is to have a solid LH relief guy and Fuentes would be perfect for them. The other is to put Giambi at DH and let Betemit play 1B almost everyday. In his last 613 AB's he has 32 HR's and 104 RBI's. Give him 550 AB's and he will hit .270-25-80 easily. Then they don't have to overpay Teixiera and can sign Sabathia.

Joel..
Who is overvalued? Nobody is talking big about Zito
Cain/Lincecum ARE the real deal.
Lowry is a decent #3 and Correia is a great #5..

Isn't that comment a little ironic coming from someone with a name zito4cyyoung??

Actually NO...There is a difference between routing for a player on my favorite team and being realistic about his performance...
I will never understand why people here get their panties in a bunch over screen names...

maximumpotential, we will have to agree to disagree on both Fuentes and the Yankees 1B/DH slot. I think trading Duncan and Britton would be something for COL to consider. Especially considering moving Fuentes would give them salary relief.
Since Matsui ended his consecutive game streak he has not been the same player. I believe he will be injured most of the year and Giambi will hold the DH spot. Although Betemit can play all of the infield positions I think Giambi's poor defense will force Girardi to put him at DH sooner rather than later.

Zito: I think Joel just meant Mays Field can “inflate” a marginal pitcher. Like Ryan Jensen ‘02 model or Jerome Williams ’04 for examples. Over the years similar things have been said about Bush. I don’t think he is implying the current crop of starters was suspects. Of coarse Joel can speak for himself but that is just the way I read it.
His theory would be logical except Sabean says he will not trade for prospects so just leaves standing pat or Hillenbrand type trades. For now I’ll take door number one please .

I had a feeling Joe Crede would start with the team on opening day. There was not much buzz about him, and probably for good reason. Once he proves he can play (I believe he will be at or near his 06 season) and more teams have their situations play out, there might be more interest.
If the White Sox can get more for him by holding him until the deadline, they should do it. There is no rush to move him now. Fields will just have to wait in AAA until he is gone.

…When Giambi leaves, coupled with everyone else being another year older, the team will need another middle of the order hitter. I don’t think Betemit will ever be that on a Yankees club…

…people who cant make points, nitpick or scrutinize. You have been here long enough to know that…

"I think trading Duncan and Britton would be something for COL to consider. Especially considering moving Fuentes would give them salary relief."
Uhh no, Colorado would no seriously consider this offer. Keep in mind that the Rockies are still currently contending, and Fuentes gives them a very good set up man. And there is no motivation for them to dump his contract, because he'll be a free agent after the season. In fact that gives him more value, because he'll almost definately be able to net the Rockies some draft picks. Draft picks that are far, far more valuable then Shelley Duncan and Chris Britton. On a team that already has Todd Helton, Shelley Duncan offers very little. Chris Britton just wouldn't bring enough to the table. The Rockies would likely want good prospects or a second baseman for Fuentes, and since the Yankees don't have any second baseman to offer (Cano is untouchable), that means they'd have to offer prospects. Considering the Yankees have a great deal of decent to good pitching prospects, I still think they could get a deal done.
How about Jeff Marquez and a low level prospect for Fuentes?
"…When Giambi leaves, coupled with everyone else being another year older, the team will need another middle of the order hitter"
I completely agree, darkstar. Not too many people are noticing, but this team is slowly becoming devoid of power. Outside of A-Rod, this team doesn't really have a ton of power. Posada, Matsui and Abreu are all aging and not likely to put up great power numbers. Damon, Jeter, and Melky won't hit for too mumch power either. Cano should see a jump in his power but not to the point where he could bat in the middle of this order. At this point I think it is necessary for the Yankees to realize that they need another power hitter, either Tex or Adam Dunn, to continue to have a dominating offense.
2009 NYY
C- Posada
1B- Teixeira/Dunn
2B- Cano
3B- Rodriguez
SS- Jeter
LF- Damon
CF- Cabrera
RF- Abreu
DH- Matsui

Before I would say that Betemit can hit 275/25 EASY I would like to see him actually come close to those numbers.
Sure, in small sample sizes, he put up nice HR ratios. However, there is nothing to indicate that he could replicate those numbers playing every day.
His minor league numbers are mediocre and he has been flipped already by two different teams. If he is really that good (and those numbers would be LA or better) then why don't teams want him?
My guess is that Betemit will make a solid platoon player. Put him in against certain pitching and he will be fine. Use him as a starter and he will be exploited. Not a horrible player but not a ML starter.

Joelcards, acquiring an overpriced underperformer with an injury history in his walk year with Boras as his agent seems to make sense for precisely no one. But hey, maybe your team can acquire him. I want him far, far away from mine, unless he comes over in a salary dump for someone like Durham.
As for overvaluing SF pitching based on Mays Field, the data would tend not to back you up. SF park factors from 2005-2007 show it suppresses runs by -1.7%. Over the same period, whatever the new Comiskey is called inflates runs by +6.1%. White Sox hitters like Crede are three times as overvalued as SF pitcher.
No wonder White Sox fans want to trade hitting for pitching.

The Quickest way to a dynasty is to establish a young solid pitching staff and the Yankees are well on their way. However I would love to see them approach San. Fran. about a swap for Matt Cain/Tim Lincecum and would be willing to see Robbie Cano go in that trade. Cano is on his way to establishing himself as a top notch 3 hole hitter with 30-35 HR pop, 125 RBI's and a .340 avg. So he could fetch a top young hurler or two in the right deal.
