« Odds and Ends: Cashman, Matsuo, Durham | Main | Latest On Rios Negotiations »
From Buster Olney's blog this morning:
The Blue Jays attempted to sign second baseman Aaron Hill to a multiyear deal but could not reach an agreement.
Hill, 26, broke out last year with a .291/.333/.459 line. He could be even better this season, with a shot at 20 home runs. His defense is among the best in the game at second base.
Hill will reach arbitration for the first time after this season. Orlando Hudson might be a solid comparable. Hudson made $2.3MM, $3.9MM, and $6.25MM in his arbitration years.

I really hope this gets done and it probly will next year. Hill is my Fav jay and I hope to see him on the team long term. This year I think the rest of the league will see what Jays fans already know, and that is that Hill is one of the best 2nd basemen in the league.

Dont worry about Hill, he is a JP draft pick (really the only MLB position player that JP drafted), his extension will get done during next offseason.
If Wells and Rios (both Gord Ash draft picks) got their long term deals, Hill should be no problem.
The JP of the last couple of seasons is a better and more mature GM than the JP 5 years ago. Now he only needs result from his players to have a good season

I personally think it was a really bad idea waiting for next year. If Hill hits 20+ home runs with a .300 batting average and a Gold Glove, as expected, then the contract would have to be MUCH more expensive than what we would get right now.

This is another guy that the Jays need to make sure they don't lose. Hill may end up battling Robinson Cano for honors as best second baseman in the AL in the next few years, with Dustin Pedroia, Brian Roberts (probably top 3 right now, but should decline), Ian Kinsler, and Asdrubal Cabrera. Hill may end being the best one of them, although I'd put my money on Cano and his potentially monster bat.
Regardless the Jays need to make sure that ths guy stays with the team long term. A young core of position players that consists of Vernon Wells, Alex Rios, Aaron Hill, Adam Lind, and Travis Snider is pretty good.

I totally agree with cyberzero, Hill will be worth more money next year (if he has a better/similar season than the 07 season). Good thing Hill isn't going to be a free agent this year (only arb year), if he was it would be harder to sign him since other teams will probably want him too. I hope Hill doesn't turn into a money-hungry player like A-Rod, he deserves a raise but a reasonable one. I hope J.P and Hill work out a deal in the off season.
