Matt Morris Retires

According to Justin Rodriguez of the Times-Herald Record, pitcher Matt Morris has retired.  He confirmed it with Rodriguez; Morris has no desire to battle his way back or work out of the bullpen.

Morris finishes with a 3.98 career ERA in 1806 innings, including a respectable 121 wins.  Kind of nice that the career ERA didn't get pushed over 4.00.  Retired at 33 with $60MM earned...can't say I don't envy him!

Well, at least he knew it was time to hang 'em up. Hopefully he won't end up pitching for one of the indy minor league teams.

I bet he unretires within a year. Guys just can't walk away from the game.

Question. Does this mean he is foregoing the money the Pirates owe him or are they still eating most of $10 million?

As for "unretirement" unless he suddenly finds his stuff again, I don't see him coming back.

I think he would have had to retire while still under contract with Pittsburgh for them to get their money back, as opposed to after they released him. Although I'm sure the team wouldn't quibble the point.

No, he gets the money. He didn't officially retire until after his release.
