Stark's Latest: Roberts, Crisp, Loretta

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings column up.  Let's examine some of the hot stove material.

  • There's nothing cooking with the Cubs and Brian Roberts.  The O's still intend to trade Roberts this year, along with pretty much all of their other veterans.  Their hot start is unlikely to halt the farm sale.
  • The Red Sox don't want to eat any of the $11MM owed to Coco Crisp over the next two years, and for now there are no trades in the works.  Roberts, Crisp, and Joe Crede were three trades we all expected to go down.
  • Once Kaz Matsui and Ty Wigginton are fully healthy, the Astros will look to trade Mark Loretta.  He makes $2.75MM this year, a bit much for a utility guy.  Stark says the Dodgers and Giants don't appear interested at present, so there's no obvious suitor.  The Orioles could re-engage if they trade Roberts and don't get a second baseman back.

Ofcourse Theo does not want to eat any money for Crisp. He is waiting to see if a contender has a CF problem. Even then, he will have to eat some of it unless there is a salary coming back.

Crisp needs to be moved. Ellsbury's already better than him, and being wasted on the bench.

The Cubs look really good so far. I say the O's can keep Roberts unless they reduce their outrageous demands. The Cubs need a better shortstop anyway.

Crisp would make a lot of sense for the Padres to try and grab. Edmonds has been brutal in center and they are lacking a legitimate center field prospect to fill the hole next year. Crisp's defense would have a bigger impact for a team like the Padres given the parks they play at (Petco, Coors, AT&T) along with helping a fly ball pitcher like Chris Young. Edmonds has already cost the team a few games. The Padres could form a package around say a Nick Hundley or Mitch Canham or perhaps even Kyle Blanks. 1B and catcher look like positions that would benefit the Sox in the coming years.

The only thing that really concerns me about the Cubs (with the exception of Zambrano, Dempster, Lieber and Weurtz) has been their inconsistent pitching so far. We will probably need Gallagher, Ceda, and/or Veal, etc. at some point this year. I’d much rather see the Cubs keep these guys – at least for a while -- then add to an already potent lineup.

@cwill, living in SD, and watching Edmonds in center, I also think the Padres are a good fit for Coco. To add to your reasons, Crisp is a fastball hitter, so he makes more sense in the NL.
But I think it is going to take a little more. Starting with Kyle Blanks. The Red Sox need for a catcher has been overstated here and most everywhere else (Dusty Brown, Mark Wagner, George Kottaras are all lower top 25ish prospects for the Sox at catcher) so if they are going to trade for a catcher, I think it will have to be a bigger upgrade then Hunley or Canham.

@TALL THRILL, tough to tell what the market is for Crisp given his lack of movement. He could end up being picked up in a similar fashion to Michael Barrett last year who was grabbed by trading Kyler Burke. Blanks would be tough to give up, but if he can't play in the outfield I can't see the guy taking over for Gonzales. Blanks and Hundley would maybe get it done. The Padres have a lot of depth in their system at catcher, so I could see them giving one of them up along with Blanks who projects as potentially a DH/1B for Crisp. As it is now Edmonds is playing so bad in center it is a legit shot that he could cost the Padres the season.

Since when is reporting that no activity is occurring about a potential trade a "news" story. I mean, there has been that same report about a Roberts deal for a while now, yet every 2-3 weeks we get an update (usually from Stark) that nothing is happening.

I am all for Crisp being moved to SD if both teams can match up.

Inconsistant is a right on about the Cubs pitching other than those mentioned. The left side SP/RP (Marshall not included since he did his job in his 1 IP) and the main three righties RP has got to pick it up.

is it really "hot stove" material if it's going on during the season?

Its early in the season. Usually there is very little to talk about in the first few weeks in the way of deals and such. Tim has to put something on the site. If you do not care about it feel free not to post in the thread about it.

jeez, dude... chill.

on earth we have this thing called sarcasm.

The Cubs are a strong team in that division, but I have to be a little concerned about the pitching....what team isn't? Zambrano has worked so many innings over his career and seems at risk for a breakdown. It also seems like Ryan Dempster will blowup at anytime.
