I'm not so happy about kicking off the day with an odds and ends post, but what can I say? I can't go around making up rumors.
- Evan Grant talks about how well the Josh Hamilton acquisition has worked out. I say acquisition, because the trade worked out smashingly for the Reds, too.
- Looks like there won't be a six-man rotation in San Fran anytime soon. Noah Lowry isn't throwing anymore, as the pins and needles in his arm have returned. He could miss the entire first half of the season. So much for being a trade candidate.
- Brewers GM Doug Melvin has said that the team will look for pitching, but not to expect anything. It's a seller's market right now. In the meantime, David Bush takes a spot in the rotation, and Jeff Weaver remains an option.
- Miguel Tejada promised a sick kid he'd hit a homer, and came through. I could never make such a promise. How could you live with yourself if you failed?
Posted by Joe Pawlikowski, who writes for River Ave. Blues, a Yankees blog (though you already knew that, right?). Today is slooooow. Hit me with rumors.
I'm going to call bs on the sick kid homerun. Oddly enough there is no commnt from the sick kid. I think tejada made this up. If I was a reporter I'd be looking for that kid right now. Tejada probably saw a sick kid then decided that the next homer he hit would be for that kid then changed it to "I'll hit a homerun in tonights game for you!"
I love Berkman's comments about it he's just like,"anything we can do to make them feel better" tejada is over here acting like he's some folk hero and berkman was probably told by the media about tejada's story and he's ready to just laugh out loud.

Its a good story and baseball needs more stories like this. Its not BS so here's the link...

WHat? Now that TEjada lied about his age, he lies about everything??? He lied once. Oh wait, that B12 shot, too...
I can't believe this sick kid story at all. Tejada has lost all credibility.
Posted by: dorfmac | May 03, 2008 at 10:15 AM
you're cool dude. Congratulations on wasting 3 or 4 minutes of youre life. Tejada lied about his age so he must be a horrible person who lies on any occasion he can, and in this case the evil Tejada was just looking for a way to get over on some kids with MD to help his image. Give me a break you fuckking clown. You should be a reporter, hunting down a sick little kid to find out whether Tejada actually promised to hit a home run for the kid, but actually just looking for a story to bash Tejada. You may have a future in reporting sports yet, you fit the absolute douchebag mentality that most of the journalists have these days. See ya later ass clown.

nrma:
Get a sense of humor dude.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | May 03, 2008 at 10:44 AM
Oh, ok, so this is the part when you feel embarrased and try to act as if you were only joking? Riiiiiiiiiight.
Posted by: nrmax88 | May 03, 2008 at 10:45 AM
First off I was laughing the whole time I wrote it. Second, yeah I'm soooo embarased!
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | May 03, 2008 at 10:49 AM
If you don't get the obvious joke in that post then you need to take a pill dude cause you are way uptight.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | May 03, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Oh and seperate from the obvious joke he is a liar and a cheater.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | May 03, 2008 at 10:53 AM
Dude, its not me being uptight, it just that I enjoy ripping into idiots who post idiotic nonsense. If you are picturing the face behind my username all steaming and angry with steam coming out of my ears, you are mistaken. I am actually in a very good mood today, it Saturday, there are some good games on today, and a uddy of mine hooked me up with some really great pot at a discount. I am feeling awesome today. But yeah, you werent joking in that post. And if by some chance you were, there wasn't any reason to think that you were joking. I am pretty sure you were being dead serious, and now you feel stupid for posting what you did so you are trying to play it off as a joke. Whatever man, do what you have to do.
"If you don't get the obvious joke in that post then you need to take a pill dude cause you are way uptight."
Just for the record, tell me, which part was the obvious joke? The part where you said Tejada was full of it? The part where you said that he fancies himself a hero? The part where you inferred that this was all a lie because the sick 7 year old boy didnt have a quote in the paper about it?
I am sorry, maybe I am just not as educated in the art of humorless jokes as you are, but which part of your post was supposed to scream joke?
Posted by: nrmax88 | May 03, 2008 at 10:58 AM
"Oh and seperate from the obvious joke he is a liar and a cheater."
Adding in a little bit like this basically shows me that you werent joking. With that last post it seems as if you are trying to make believers out of other readers.
"Well, he lied about his age, to escape poverty and hopefully sign on with a pro team, so he must lie about everything. I bet when he goes out to eat and orders a steak, he actually wanted the beef casserole, because Tejada's a liar, and that is what liars do."
What does the fact that he lied about his age or used a performance enhancing substance have to do with him promising a sick kid a home run?
Posted by: nrmax88 | May 03, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Yeah dude you're not uptight at all look at your posts! Maybe you didn't get the joke, no big deal. You are right there my cheeks are red right now my heart beat is racing and tears are starting to stream down my eyes out of complete embarrasment. How I look such the fool. If I had just woken up in a cheery mood like you I would be cursing on a baseball site. There are lots of great storys in baseball. Everything is not bad. This story is fun. If you can't get a joke about how tejada lied and now I'm calling him a liar about a story that other people saw happen then again sorry dude.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | May 03, 2008 at 11:07 AM
You're right nrmax I'm sorry you've broken me down. I was being serious. Gosh!! It feels so good to let that out. You have no idea the weight that has been lifted. I feel like a new man. You've changed me I can now go out into the world knowing I am completley full of it.

Away Message from nrmax88: I cannot respond right now, I am reading a book titled : Humorless Jokes and the Idiots who Tell them.
It will help me better understand the art of humor better, so I can correctly identify a joke from a ridiculous and stupid post.
Please leave a message at the beep.

"Dude, its not me being uptight, it just that I enjoy ripping into idiots who post idiotic nonsense"
Wow, you enjoy ripping into anonymous people on an Internet message board, how big of you! Please explain how getting into a pissing match over whether a post was a joke or not, is not 'idiotic nonsense'?

"Wow, you enjoy ripping into anonymous people on an Internet message board, how big of you!"
Not for no reason, but when they post crap like he did, yes, I find it enjoyable to tell somebody what an idiot they are. Call it a hobby of mine. Besides, if somebody said to me in person exactly what was posted to start the topic, I would respond in the same manner. When I started the "pissng match" with him, it wasnt over whether he was joking or not, it was over the content of the post, which I thought was idiotic. I hope that helps sweetie pie.

Nrmax I heard that tejada actually does go to restaraunts and do that. Except it's worse then you think. Tejada orders steak but just to be a total dick he orders it rare then makes them take it back at least twice. I heard he totally gets off on it. Everybody says he's a dick at the denny's I work at.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | May 03, 2008 at 11:33 AM
See Joe, thats funny stuff right there, and I could see thru the humor all the way to the heart of the joke.
Whatever, I'll just drop it, but your first post just annoyed me because that accusing somebody of lying at the expense of sick little kids to help their tarnished image is pretty serious and would make the guy you are accusing the ultimate scum bag. Anyway, my bad, I apologize.
Posted by: nrmax88 | May 03, 2008 at 11:39 AM
Josh Hamilton really is working out great. Volquez will likely drop off, but Hamilton looks like the real deal.
(sorry to interupt this blog to talk about baseball).
I'm glad you guys worked it out. Its just too bad you can't hug.

Who the hell do you think you are discussing baseball in here? I like everybody who posts here. The bickering and arguements is part of MLBTR, and has been since before I started to post here. Like I have said before, this place is sort of like a huge dysfunctional baseball loving family. And you get your free entertainment every couple of days.

Some advice, nrmax: Attack the idea, not the person.
Posted by: Joe Pawlikowski | May 03, 2008 at 12:03 PM
There's no love loss between me and nrmax, but he's right in this instance. Gregnoll, your rant was an unrelated-to-the-topic comment about another comment about the post, so you are an extra person removed from the topic, that gets you the gold star for obnoxious and irrelevant commenting for today! It's still early though, so we may have a come from behind winner, so hope!
By the way, I'm not knocking them for their commenting 'cause that's what this blog is about... My issue is that the only thing you've brought up so far is an analysis of how someone's "being a bigger person" using sarcasm to deliver the message. The reality is you need to stay out of it or talk about the headlines...
As for the homerun... I think that was awesome on Tejada's part and I totally believe him! I wouldn't be so brazen if I was him playing in say Safeco Field or in San Francisco, but the steroids conversation is way overrated anyways...
You can talk about all the advantages, but it doesn't raise your average, for all the homeruns they hit, they take away just as many "Texas Leaguer" bloop shots over the infield, as those get extra carry to the outfielders. As for homeruns, if they don't have the right swing-plain, they won't hit them out anyways...
Vidro could eat spinach, takes HGH in the AM and PM, shoot up B-12, inject himself with real anabolic steroids, take over the counter drugs, live on creatine and other GNC products, workout morning, noon, and night, and at the end of the day still not be a 20 homerun guy, so this topic is dead to me about steroid use and the way it tears down the league. There was a time when it was considered undesireable to workout in the early years of baseball, should we put an asterisk next to all the guys that worked out pre-1960s?!
The old saying in regards to the news is "there is no such thing as bad press only good press and better press." Baseball probably brought this up to put the focus back on their sport. They have since seen record numbers in attendance, sales of merchandise, and t.v. contracts. Who really benefits from martyring a couple players?! (a) the fans, (b) the owners, or (c) the politicians that are paid on tax dollars (which baseball creates a lot of)?! If you picked "b" and "c", you are correct!
Posted by: BaseballGuru | May 03, 2008 at 12:06 PM
As far as Tejada goes, he never has hit that many more homeruns than he did when he first came up as a 5'10" and 165lbs. rookie for the Athletics... I just don't see how his numbers are inflated... Where do you draw the line in competitive advantage?! Is working out more than your peers, cheating?!
If that's the case we should put a limit on hours in the gym. Was Carlton Fisk cheating because he stayed at the stadium until 2am after night games working out so that he could catch until he was 40-something years old?! Keep giving the propaganda steam, just what everyone wants who wears a suit and is connected to baseball...
Oh and Tejada is just as big as he used to be and they are surely giving him more thorough test for steroids, so what gives?! We should just go off a report published by a guy too senile to be given any greater task in the world than to investigate the validity of conjecture against people who play a game for a living?!
Good choice on your sources and by the way, he's already been proven wrong on a number of players as there has been retraction statements posted... I'll try and hunt some of them down and post them here... Try thinking for yourself, it'll help you avoid the same fate as the good Senator!
Anecdotal comment about the writer: I'm a die hard baseball fan that has a love for tradition and if I could go back and watch any time period of our pastime, I would watch the 20's and 30's. I'd rather watch a stolen base than a homerun any day, but I can smell the difference between the sh*t and the roses! This is a witch hunt, plain and simple. If you don't think so, go golfing with David Sterns and become a basketball fan, we don't need your attendance at the games! Believe me when I say that we'll get by without you!

Josh Hamilton is a stud and if you want to talk about real drug issues, it's not the steroids tearing down the game, it's the cocaine and recreational drugs... I don't care what someone does in their free time, but when you start going down a path that Hamilton was on for a while and Caminiti before his death...
I think it's pretty clear the biggest loss for the fans comes when a guy like Josh has his skills wasted because of addiction... Who knows how many other great ballplayers could've been if not for the allure of coke and other secondary drugs...
I don't do anything anymore, but I've never heard of players losing their edge in football from doing a little pot, just go ask Marvin Lewis about his team! All those guys were still top flight players on the Bengals even while smoking weed...
It's the uppers that are wrecking this game, not some pot or steroids... Keep the focus on what matters, not on what doesn't! I'm glad Josh got his life together because even though he plays against my Mariners in the AL West, it's still more fun watching games against the Rangers with him out there! Volquez has been a very positive surprise and my parents in Cinci can't stop raving about the 1-2 punch in Cueto and Volquez that they found walking the streets of Florida this Spring Training!
