| Jerry Owens Blocked By Carlos Quentin's Surprising Start »

And now for something completely different, Odds and Ends:
- ESPN reports that the Yankees optioned Ian Kennedy to Triple-A. To take his place, they recalled Darrell Rasner who in 5 Triple-A games is 4-0 with 0.87 ERA and 27 K in 31 IP. Kennedy relies on control and control he has had not. He has the highest percentage of working into hitters counts of anyone in the bigs.
- The Rays are the first team ever to hold the first pick in back-to-back years, and unlike last year when they selected David Price without thinking twice, they are presently undecided. According to Marc Lancaster, "It's a safe bet their choice will come from the following pool: Vanderbilt 3B Pedro Alvarez, Griffin (Ga.) High SS Tim Beckham, Florida State C Buster Posey, Missouri RHP Aaron Crow, University of San Diego LHP Brian Matusz and Riverside (Calif.) Patriot High C Kyle Skipworth."
- Art Spander in the Oakland Tribune calls on Billy Beane to sign Barry Bonds. Mike Sweeney and Frank Thomas aren't enough. Says Spander, "[Bonds] still can put balls in the seats and... butts in the seats. As opposed to you putting a tarp over them. The A's have to stop being a secret and start becoming an attraction."
- Brian Cashman: Phillies GM? So speculates Jim Salisbury. With no Johan but an injured Phil Hughes and ineffective Ian Kennedy, Cashman could find himself jettisoned by default from the organization should they miss the playoffs. Pat Gillick's contract is up after this year and Cashman once looked favorably on that gig. But if you ask me, Mr. Salisbury is getting way ahead of himself.
- Billy Wagner tells the New York Post's Steve Serby that he expects to retire after 2009. And he still hasn't had a bagel. That blows my mind.

Two things: First, if the Rays take one of the catchers, they are morons because they are both two steps down of the Weiters or Mauer type amateur prospect. I would think that the pool is down to them taking Matusz, Alvarez, Crow or Beckham, probably a position player.
Second, every Phillie staff member and their second cousin knows that Ruben Amaro Jr. will be given the GM job.

I think Cashman should go to the Giants!! He should also team up with Ron Washington, after they both get fired from their respective posts. =)

Couldn't Cashman be reasonably considered for the Cubs job? Hendry's contact expires after this season and with new ownership arriving I wouldn't be surprised to see them go a different route. That being said I wouldn't be too shocked if Cashman took some time off too. I imagine it's been a bit stressful while in NY.

gogopalehose, Skipworth is more advanced and projectable than Mauer at a comparable age. His level of competition is significantly higher in California than Mauer in Minnesota.
Most of all, there is zero doubt that Skipworth can stay behind the plate, while many predict Wieters will have to move from behind the plate to first base sooner rather than later.

If Cashman is available in the off season he needs to replace Jim Bowden.

The only comment I've heard about Wieter's ability to remain behind the plate is that he's unusually tall for a catcher. There are no real question marks on his defense. Do you have any sources on your comments on Wieters? I'm actually curious, not being argumentative.

No chance for Billy Beane to sign Bonds. He said Thomas is here to be the every day D.H. and seeing as how we already have two back up D.H.'s there's no chance and no reason for the A's to get Bonds

The reason many want Weiters to move to first base has nothing to do with him being bad defensively at catcher. It's because he has such a power bat that I think it would be in the best interest of the O's to move him to first base to extend his career. This guy can flat out hit and I'd rather see him at first as well. Quiroz should be given a chance as our full time catcher. He is an excellent defensive catcher and used to be one of the best catcher prospects in baseball, but his bat never developed in the majors. I think there's a chance he comes around enough to catch for us full time, but that would be after Ramon is traded, whenever that happens. I don't have sources for the Weiters info, it's just the "word around the campfire" with the group of O's fans I talk to and it seems to be a shared sentiment.

The AL teams that were interested in Frank Thomas reveal a general need to improve in the areas that Bonds' offense brings, esp. in the form of DH. Yet, Bonds is still unemployed.
Im sorry, but I dont buy the clubhouse cancer, media baggage hype, or pending litigation specter (which wont affect this season anyway). When it comes down to it teams and players want to win, and every team has some form of cancer, baggage or legal crap on their current roster anyway. The added media attention is only going to attract more viewers, readers, coverage, advertisers, merchandise sales, etc. Has SF suffered a PR backlash as a result of Bonds' presence? No.
Bonds, as quoted, will put butts and balls in seats, not too mention a few extra wins that may spell the difference for a post season appearance.

Oops ... turns out the youth movement in the Bronx just hasn't panned out as expected. What happened to Kennedy and his sub 2 ERA or Hughes and his elite #1 stuff? I'm not the only who foresaw the potential nightmare that comes with relying on two very young pitchers. I think both will be fine in the long run but people were expecting way too much too early.
The Yanks should have traded for Johan. There is no other way to spin it.
What's really scary is that that Moose has actually pitched well and Wang certainly won't get better. There are going to be riots when those guys regress closer to their projections.

Kennedy was just overused last year. This is his year after and it's showing already. The injury to Hughes is a blessing in disguise because now, it's going to be hard to overuse him. He is starting to look like an injury risk. Chamberlain would be much easier to overuse at around 150 innings. The Yankees better be careful and yes, they definitely should have traded for Johan. The Yanks are in trouble and will probably end up getting into some more trouble with Joba for next season.

…Hehehe, no kidding! I took so much slack for saying that relying on two pitchers with less than 250 *Combined* Pro-Innings and another off about 110-120 IP season was going to be difficult ~ not that they had no talent or bad stuff or anything, just that relying on the 3 for 2008 would make for a difficult situation. It was always “oh, youre nuts. They are studs. They will be great, there is no way they wont produce at-worst Sub-LgAvg results, etc, etc, etc”. Now those posters are no where to be found though…
