« Cards Showcasing Reyes In Triple A? | Main | Braves Acquire Greg Norton »
Dejan Kovacevic fills us in on the Pirates' attempts to retain 25 year-old reliever Evan Meek.
Meek was a Rule 5 pick who the Bucs just couldn't hide in their big league pen all year. Meek was designated for assignment yesterday but the Pirates are trying to make a deal with the Rays rather than return him.
Baseball America says that Meek "uses a low-90s fastball that has good sink and run to pick up strikeouts and groundballs." As you might guess, control has been an issue.

It seems really silly that if they liked this guy this much, they couldnt just keep him all year. What is he going to do, screw up their 60 win season?

They 'couldn't hide' him in their pen? Why, afraid they might ruin their chances of finishing in 5th place instead of 6th? If they really value him that much, they should not risk either losing him or having to surrender some of their very limited resources to keep him. Giving up something for a player they like and already have (had) is not the way to end a 15 consecutive losing season streak.

If they get him for cash considerations, then stash him in AA or AAA to get more regular work and some confidence its worth a shot...

nrmax and gravedigger, I agree with both of you that it doesn't matter at all if the Pirates keep him and put him in situations where he has to be counted on to win or lose the game. It maybe is the difference between 67 wins and 70 wins. The reason the Pirates designated him was not because he was hurting the team, but more so because Sean Burnett was pitching lights out in AAA (as he did in spring training) and deserved to be on the major league team much more than a few players already in the Pirate bullpen, especially Meek. This move was just to make room for Burnett.

Kett08,
I think there was a two-fold purpose, your point and the fact that Meek needs more time in the minors...were it simply about room, they would have/should have dropped Osoria...

I have to agree with everyone's comments here. I think most Pirate fans are not giving Evan Meek a fair shake. What damage could he do that already hasn't and won't be done. The Pirates have no hope of contending anyway. Give him the ball and let him learn in the big leagues.
