« Odds And Ends: Rusch, Dohmann, Meek | Main | Jayson Stark's Latest »
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle has some telling quotes from Giants GM Brian Sabean. Despite a 17-24 record and being 8.5 games behind the D-Backs in 3rd place of the NL West, Sabean says the Giants are not going to give up on the '08 season and will not be trading off their veteran players.
"As long as we've got a chance to stay in and around third place, why not?" Sabean said as he stood along the dugout rail and watched his players take batting practice. "Why wouldn't you want to think that way? These guys think that way"
"You're seven games under .500. That's where you don't want to be, but I really feel good about the energy around the club and I feel good about some of our choices. We've now got a solution at first base. We've got a solution at third. We've gotten Omar (Vizquel) back. Freddie Lewis has come into his own and (Emmanuel) Burriss has been a real factor lately.
"I don't think we're going to lose as many games as we did last year. If anything, we're going to be a second-half team."
These comments seem odd considering that the Giants have several players that would appear to be good candidates to be traded, including Ray Durham (free agent at end of year), Dave Roberts (on DL, $6.5MM in '09), Omar Vizquel ($5.2MM team option in '09), Rich Aurilia (free agent at end of year) and Bengie Molina ($6MM in '09). Of course, even if Sabean did want to move those players, he might have a hard time without eating a good portion of the contracts remaining.

He'll change his tune come late June when they fall even farther back...

I should hope that this is just a leverage-retaining statement and that he's not actually serious.

Just another reason Sabean is potentially the worst GM in baseball.

Add 09 and 10 to the list of consecutive years where the Giants will be a bad team with an absurd payroll. I had high hopes of them realizing the state of affairs and righting the ship. Oh well.

Note to Sabean: you don't get a trophy for 3rd place.

I saw this article this morning and I still can't believe it. Not just a ridiculous idea, but a ridiculous statement to back it up. We're not going to trade off the vets & commit to rebuilding because we're "in or around" THIRD PLACE? What?!?

i love stupid people, sabean is certainly in that group

As if any more publicly available evidence were needed that Sabean is the stupidest GM in baseball. His protege, BobbleNed Colleti gives him a run for his money, but Sabean's career performance reserves him the title.

I think that Sabean is a good GM for a team that's in a win-now type of style. He's not the guy you want for a re-building mode. Being an A's and giant fan all my life (but more of an A's fan) I have to ask why it is that when the A's rebuild they're sucessful, and when the giants try they end up with a bunch of no name vets? I mean the A's openly admitted they're in arebuilding mode and they're winning, the giants declined to say they were rebuilding but obioucly they need to.

"when the giants try they end up with a bunch of no name vets?"
When was that? Not in my lifetime. It's long past time they got started, but I'm not holding my breath.

It may not matter much longer what Brian Sabean thinks about the future of the Giants. With Peter Magowan leaving, Sabean's influence on the team may only extend through the draft. Whoever takes over running the team may not be satisfied with the "who needs corner infielders?" approach to team-building.

"When was that? Not in my lifetime. It's long past time they got started, but I'm not holding my breath."
umm...what?

They don't have anything to sell......outside of Lincecum.

"They don't have anything to sell......outside of Lincecum."
Glen, sure they do, look at past trade dealines, teams in the hunt for red october :) overpay for guys like, Winn, who is doing great, Molina, new nickname Big $Money$ Molina, if Sabean had any brains he would wait till the deadline and the demand a lot from a team like the White Sox whose catcher is playing like my dog's S#!T.
There are plenty of guys for the giants to sell away.
Posted by: AriGoldisaG | May 15, 2008 at 06:27 PM
Give me a break, there are PLENTY of Giants to sell on besides Lincecum! Is Cain suddenly chopped liver now? At one point he was considered the future face of this franchise...and he's still younger than Lincecum! Jonathan Sanchez, Fred Lewis, Brian Wilson, Merkin Valdez, maybe Bowker...not to mention the possibility of Winn and Molina if they were willing to eat a little salary. Obviously you don't know much about the team if you think Lincecum is the only valuable commodity to sell.

But anyway, Sabean is showing his intelligence (or lack thereof) yet again. Randy Winn has NO place on this team. I like the guy and he does some things fairly well, but Schierholtz deserves a shot at playing everyday in the majors at this point. He could have a future with the team...not Randy Winn. His patience seems to be improving this year, he has cannon in right, and FAR more power than Winn. I can't believe the stupidity. I can see holding on to Molina to help with the rotation and provide veteran leadership or whatever...and he's not really blocking anything (prospects...balls too though) so that I can see. But Winn?!?! Really?!

"umm...what?"
Not too sure what's unclear.
You: "why is it that... when the giants try [to rebuild] they end up with a bunch of no name vets?"
Me: "When was that? Not in my lifetime. It's long past time they got started, but I'm not holding my breath."
I don't really see where we're missing here, so I'll try to be super explicit: "When was that [i.e., when did the Giants commit to rebuilding]? Not in my lifetime [i.e. not in the last 28 years]. It's long past time they got started [i.e. they've needed to begin a rebuilding process for the last several years], but I'm not holding my breath [i.e. I don't expect them to do it properly even now that it's more obvious than ever]."

Sabean really came off as a drunken jack-a$$ in that quote.
Nothing like being excited about being in 3rd place. Jesus.
Posted by: Ya Hote Ta | May 16, 2008 at 08:02 AM
The Giants will not be sellers because they have nothing to sell. Dave Roberts? Ray Durham? Omar Vizquel? They may as well be selling old used underwear.
Posted by: OmegaMan | May 16, 2008 at 01:18 PM
We are so close to consistently winning. This year's Giants are a fun (and frustrating) bunch to watch. Much better than previous years of waiting for the 3 run homer but getting a Bonds walk instead. The only vets I'd keep are Rowand, Visquel, and Molina. Otherwise, let the kids play, leave our starters alone and pleeeeeeeeeeeease find us a 3rd sacker and a new GM that is not satisfied with just finishing out of the cellar.

Great idea lets fight for a non playoff spot and keep all the old guys who have never done anything the past 4 years, and continue to push off building the farm and for the future. It's impossible to convince me that Sabean isn't a Dodgers fan.
Posted by: Giant Deric | May 27, 2008 at 04:59 PM
Whats the point in keeping Vizquel jeff26bb? why not just play Manny Burriss and Ray Durham in the middle infield and sit Vizquel. Then we hope to have Durham rise in stock to trade him somewhere possibly for Hall. Lets trade Winn and Durham and anyone else possible (although not to many are) and only keep Rowand and Molina as the vets.
Its unfair for the Giants to be cheating Burriss, Denker, Bowker, Velez and Schierholtz out of a great opportunity to let them try to prove themselves over a rebuilding season. Instead they are having their time stolen by wash ups or players with no potential for the future, like Aurilia, Vizquel, Durham and Winn. Let the youngsters play!
