Ken Rosenthal has a new hot stove article up.
- Rosenthal leads with some Mark Teixeira-Angels speculation, but admits the Braves aren't considering trading him and the Angels are content with their team. The Halos' .706 team OPS ranks 12th in the AL; something should be done.
- All kinds of Mariners turmoil. They could look to acquire a center fielder given the move back to right for Ichiro. Releases of Richie Sexson and Jose Vidro could be on the agenda. And chemistry problems abound, with Ichiro and Kenji Johjima at the center.
- The Ms might consider Chris Antonetti and David Forst for the GM job, but both could choose to wait for the position to open up on their current teams. Antonetti seems likely to stay put, based on his comments and actions.
- Adam Dunn likes the Reds' future and wants to stay.
- If the Twins keep Francisco Liriano in the minors a bit longer, he will lose his shot at becoming a Super Two player.
- Past reports have named the Mets, Red Sox, Braves, Yankees, White Sox, Rangers, Indians, Mariners, and Tigers as clubs interested in Freddy Garcia. Rosenthal adds the Rays to the mix.
- On Sunday, Peter Gammons said the Red Sox "might look at a count worker like the Marlins' Josh Willingham" if David Ortiz needs surgery. Rosenthal agrees that the Sox "indeed might be interested" but believes the Marlins want to hang on to him (even though he reaches arbitration after this season).
- The Cardinals "made a quick inquiry" on Michael Barrett but backed off when Yadier Molina's injury turned out to be day-to-day.
would the M's be interested in someone like coco crisp? if so, what would the sox expect to get back for him?

Too bad Bavarsi isn't the GM any more, he might have offered Clement and Morrow for Crisp.
Theo will hold out for someone good and Crisp's recent power surge might actually convince the M's to give up the goods.

I would Boston might possibly be interested in Kenji considering Tek’s situation… I know he has the new contract, but they would be getting rid of Coco’s themselves if Seattle was to fill that hole. Maybe something else thrown in somewhere, but the base of it seems to make sense…

I can't see any reason the Red Sox would have interest in Johjima. He has been awful this year and his pitching staff hates him. To go from one of the best catchers at calling games in Varitek to one of the worst in Johjima doesn't make much sense. They would be much better off sticking with Crisp as a backup OF than trading for Johnjima.

“can't see any reason the Red Sox would have interest in Johjima”
…Is it because he calls a bad game? I thought we heard differently last year, and I would be suspect of a pitching staff that is doing really bad taking out their frustrations on the catcher. Then, Kenji was one of the better fielding catchers around…
I mean, it doesn’t matter to me, just saying to begin with. And hey, maybe I’m wrong ~ but it just seemed a good fit…

Fielding is different than calling games to me. It just doesn't make any sense to trade for a player who isn't better than what you have. With Varitek being the heart and soul of this team, I'd rather pay him to play a year or two past his prime than to bring in Johjima. Varitek is still an decent hitting catcher who is loved by teammates. I have no more information than you do on this, but it makes no sense to me. Crisp is a useful player to have around when 2/3 of your OF (Drew and Manny) have the pain tolerance of a 6 year old girl.

UConn,
Nah, I know D and calling a game is different ~ the two were separate in the post. Ad I really thought we heard he called a good game last year (but that could have come from reading a "guru" post, I dont remember...)
And I also know that Tek should still ideally be with BoSox for a year or two more ~ but his games total is going down and a good back-up/insurance policy is desired for him from my understanding. Kenji in a 1/3-4 game situation and as a late inning guy isnt that bad at all in my mind ~ maybe it is though…
Then, Crisp is valuable to a certain degree (esp with an OF of Drew, Manny and a Rookie plus an ailing DH), but he is easier to replace from within as well. If he wasn’t then we probably wouldn’t hear his name so often.
Plus, I even said others thrown in ~ not that it would be straight up…
And all of it really doesn’t matter much, was seriously just tossing it out as an Idea and the team might not like it.
