Boras Speaks

Super agent Scott Boras called Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently; here are a few highlights.

  • Boras wouldn't address Pedro Alvarez specifically, but talked at length about how his elite draft picks have become successful investments for teams.  Boras referenced Mark Teixeira and the Drew brothers, who received deals in the $7-10MM range.
  • Boras client Xavier Nady might want to stay in Pittsburgh beyond the '09 season, but the team has never broached an extension.

We need to keep X and Bay. Morgan, Cutch, Pearce and even Duffy all combined will not hit for the power that those two can. Bay, McLouth and Nady are legit hitters and a decent threat anytime they are on the field. Theres a reason they are the most productive outfield and another reason we are top 10 offense in the majors, top 5 in the NL - just imagine if we had pitching!

I'm certainly not saying trade Cutch but theres no reason to put him on the 40 man and start his major league contract just yet. He's not ready anyway.

I agree ryan!

It drives me nuts when I read Pirates sites wanting to blow it up and start from scratch as if we have nothing. We have the third best offense in baseball this year. That's good!

We definitely need better pitching, though. I would try to shop Nady for a legit #2 starter, similar to how the Rays got Garza for Delmon Young.

I was thinking some kind of trade with Nady and maybe one of our young underachieving pitchers (Snell maybe?) and see if Seattle would trade us Bedard.

Considering how long its taken Drew to lave a mark, he isn't exactly the kind of arguement Boras wants to bring up.

"We definitely need better pitching, though. I would try to shop Nady for a legit #2 starter, similar to how the Rays got Garza for Delmon Young."

Completely different scenario. Delmon Young is younger, cheaper, and has a much brighter future.

I agree with start wearing purple on the cactusbix scenerio. The Young-Garza trade was a completely different sceneario. I believe at this time Nady is 28 or 29. Delmon Young was 22 when he was traded. Garza was a year or two older. And if you are trying to say that Nady's value equals that value your not right. Despite his numbers this year Youngs potential to hit for power and average is amazing. He could be a .300 hitter who hits 30 HR-120 R.B.I.s and has a cannon in left feild not the same scenario. And about Bedard trust me as an O's fan this guy has nothing good about him but his stuff. He is always injured and in addition when he's not he wines and complains about not winning or being overworked. He's not worth it. Especially for a guy like Snell who has potential and has almost proved it and Nady.

Young also has 30 SB speed and is playing out of position in Left, as he should be in Right or even Center. That said, he strikes out way too much and Nady's arm is almost as good.

Ruin baseball, meet Scott Boras. Scott Boras, meet ruin baseball. Oh, you two have met before? My apologies.

When college atheletes get guaranteed major league contracts with larger bonuses than many star player's salaries, things have gone asunder.

As good as Pedro is, the Pirates should not cave in. No major league contract, no 8 figure bonus.

Pedro's value drops because he is 1 year older next year. I'd gladly take the #3 pick in next year's draft if he doesn't sign to a REASONABLE contract.

Prove your worth, THEN get the big bucks. Isn't that how it is in normal life???

Yeah, and then you woke up.

delaware, get over it. Boras is the best at what he does. Baseball is making more money then ever. NFL drafted players get massive signing bonuses. NBA lottery picks get big gaurunteed dollars. Even in the NHL these guys usually make some good scratch when they are picked high enough. Why shouldnt Alvarez get his money? If the Bucs don't sign him, it once again proves why are the pathetic franchise that they are. The best thing that has happened to them in the last 20 years is hosting an all star game. You know what Alvarez's signign demands are going to be like before you draft him. It is absurd to draft a talent like him, represented by Boras, and then expect to get him signed cheap. Cough up the money and pay the guy, or dont, and just stay horrible for ever.

nrmax,
It is absurd for Alvarez to ask for more than the first overall pick received, in my opinion.

No one player makes or breaks a franchise.

The NFL actually stated it will opt out of it's collective bargaining agreement with the players union over THIS SPECIFIC issue. Players drafted making more money than players who have actually played.

The Pirates should stay the line. Offer the same percentage over slot that Beckham got. No major league contract.

Boras is good at screwing his clients over in the long term for increased near term dollars.
Had Alvarez signed for slot or somewhere above slot, he'd be in the minors now. All Boras manages to do with this little show is to delay Pedro's arbitration clock. THAT's when the big money kicks in. Ask Ryan Howard.

The Pirates aren't horrible for lack of signing players. They are bad because of stupid trades (Nady, Ramirez, Schimdt, et al), questionable drafts, injuries, and poor development. They seem to lack a coherent plan on what to do.

The Nady trade was horrible. Keep the players and take the draft picks was a better plan than what they got.

As per Alvarez? Take the 3rd overall pick next year Pirates. Maybe Pedro breaks his hamate again at Vanderbilt and drops his stock again.
