« Twins Rumors: Bonser, Beltre, Roberts, Monroe | Main | Yankees Not Eyeing Byrd, Washburn? »
12:09pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick sees Laird staying put, at least until the offseason.
11:22am: Rosenthal says the Fish are pushing for Laird, but won't give up an MLB-ready starter for him. Mike Hindman wonders if the Rangers are demanding Ryan Tucker, putting a wrinkle into the Manny talks.
10:02am: The Marlins can cross Ivan Rodriguez off their list of catching targets, though they did make a concerted effort according to ESPN's Jayson Stark. They obviously couldn't part with a veteran reliever; in fact they just acquired one in Arthur Rhodes.
Stark says the Marlins are still looking for catching help. He believes Bengie Molina will stay put, but Gerald Laird, Ramon Hernandez, Gregg Zaun, and others are still out there.

Probably will be Greg Zaun, he wants out and he's not expensive. He's not much of an upgrade but probably better than anybody they can bring up.

The Marlins sure do make everything way more interesting.

O please Marlins get Laird so the Reds don't make that mistake. I WANT SALTALAMACCHIA!!!

Yeah too bad if the Marlins get Laird the Rangers aren't trading Saltalamacchia. Sorry to wreck your dream

they have Teagarden and Ramirez ready to step in. It has been said they are willing to trade up to two of their catchers

Yankess have Chad Moeller...What can we get for him?

They wouldn't trade both of their MLB Catchers. What would be the point of that?

They feel comfortable in believing they have four major league ready catchers. They would trade Salty and Laird in a heartbeat if they got the type of returns they're looking for on them.

There is no way the Rangers would trade both Salty and Laird at least until the offseason.
Why you might ask?
Well Teagarden is currently playing in the Olympics and Max Ramirez just got hurt last night. There would be no starter if those two are unavailable.

All of u idiots that want to trade away Salty need to calm down. He is the youngest catcher that we have and he is in his 1st full season. Not everyone comes up and demolishes major league pitching, some say it is actually very difficult to hit it. Give Salty a chance.

So you'd mortgage the future just because Teagarden is out at the Olympics and Ramirez has an undisclosed leg injury which could be nothing? The Rangers aren't serious about competing this year anyway. This shouldn't stop them from making deals for the future.
It's all moot anyway because I believe Jon Daniels will end up messing the entire thing up somehow.

And rangersfan: I agree completely. Ideally I'd like to see Salty and Teagarden stay. It all depends on the returns though of course.

Drago you're acting like if the Rangers don't trade both of them now then they'll never have another opportunity... there's always the offseason. I'd personally love to see one of these Laird rumors come true and then trade one of the other three in the offseason.
Besides as much as this year is a buyer's market rather than a seller's market the Rangers could probably get more in the offseason anyway.

The Rangers are 4.5 games out of the wild card. They CAN do it,they just need an SP.Brandon McCarthy is almost ready to return, and trading Laird and a prospect for an SP is worth the the run this year, and will give us a head start for next year.Just think NO YANKEES OR REDSOX in the playoffs!

Tranger: Very good points, but you've gotta think Laird will never have as much value as he has right now with his solid performance and the scurry for catchers around the league. They could always trade him in the offseason like you say but it may not be as lucrative a return as what they'll get now if he regresses back to his average. Then again, based on the fact they haven't traded him yet they're obviously not getting what they want anyway so holding would be the preferred option like you say.
taarboy: The Rangers are 4.5 out but they would still have to pass several teams that are better than they are. I love the fact people are even talking about them this time of year, but I'm glad Daniels isn't selling just to make a playoff push.
