Odds & Ends: Astros, Tigers, Rays

Some Odds & Ends to reinforce the adage that you can never have enough pitching:

  • Astros will be scouting Freddy Garcia when he throws in Miami on August 5th.  Garcia could become one of the bigger names after the deadline.
  • The Rays continue to look at Brian Fuentes, and feel that pitching may be more of a need than hitting, according to Marc Topkin.  However David Price, Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson, and Reid Brignac remain untouchable.  Price could just be the answer.
  • In Detroit, Joel Zumaya has not been the answer to Todd Jones' struggles of late.  As John Paul Morosi puts it, "Fernando Rodney has been the Tigers' most consistent reliever lately. But that could be good news or bad news, depending on your perspective."  The Tigers have been busy at the deadline for the past two years, trading Craig Monroe to the Cubs last year and acquiring Sean Casey the year before.

are you suggesting that price be traded for fuentes? i certainly hope not...

Yeah there are reasons that Davis, Price, Hellickson and Brignac are untouchable.

If any team wants to deal with the Rays they're gonna have to settle for guys like Jeff Niemann.

Personally if I was the Rockies I would take a hard look at a Niemann offer, but would probably want a John Jaso in the deal as well. Not quite so sure the Rays can find a match with Colorado

The chances of Fuentes being traded are decreasing by the day. The Rockies are playing much better and I doubt the Rockies will find an offer that is better than the two picks they would receive when he leaves for free agency.

I think he means 'Why trade for Fuentes when you can just use Price in the bullpen this year?'

V - Right on. Price is as untouchable as it gets.

Damn...was dreamin' on a Sherrill (and a decent prospect) for Brignac deal. What?! I knew it was a longshot, but you try going through a season with Luis Hernandez, Brandon Fahey, Freddie Bynum, and Juan Castro as your best options at SS. Then try scanning your minor leagues for help and finding...ABSOLUTELY FRIGGIN' NOTHING! Please Tampa! PLEEEEEEEEASE!
