Rosenthal's Latest: Teixeira, Yankees, Padres, Fish

And now, the latest from Ken Rosenthal's Full Count video:
  • If the Braves decide to shop Mark Teixeira, they may have a tough time getting as much as they'd like. The Red Sox, Angels, and Diamondbacks - among other contenders - are set at 1B/DH with David Ortiz, Casey Kotchman, and Conor Jackson respectively. Rosenthal notes Boston will only pursue Teixeira if Ortiz's wrist fails to heal.
  • Brian Cashman isn't sure whether the Yankees are buyers or sellers.  Most of their high paid players have no-trade clauses.  Should they want to buy, Rosenthal suggests A.J. Burnett is a guy they could make a play for: an underperformer with a contract the Blue Jays would be happy to pass off.
  • The Padres are planning to hold onto Brian Giles with the anticipation that a better replacement will not be available this winter. They continue to shop Randy Wolf, who can veto up to 14 clubs, and Greg Maddux to the Cubs continues to be bandied about.
  • The Marlins need help in the bullpen, at catcher, and particularly centerfield. They could pursue Willy Taveras, Scott Podsednik, or potentially free agent Kenny Lofton, 41, who has generated interest but not signed anywhere.

if ortiz wrist doesn't heal, Teixeira is an expensive way to replace a DH since they would also be paying for a solid defensive 1B they can't use.

Cheap option would be power hitting Lefty, Dallas McPhearson if they want a lefty bat.

McPhearson is a solid DH option with all the power from the left side of Tex without the price tag. Since they don't need the defense, why pay for it.

The Marlins spending money to sign Kenney Lofton! I'm shocked. :)

I don't think Maddux to the Cubs makes sense, since he really wasn't that big of an asset the last time he was here. Don't get me wrong, I am a big Maddux fan (think of him as the pitcher of this era) but I don't believe that he's a good addition for the Cubs.

baxter i agree wholeheartedly. i wouldnt like to see Tex in the redsox lineup. sure he'd probably hit well, BUT we'd most likely need to give up top prospects, and we could get McPhearson for a few fringe prospects probably.

the Marlins don't need a CFer. Cody Ross has an .827 OPS and a .941 RZR and 26 OOZ in 408 inn (rate of one every 15 inn).

AKA he's very much above average offensively at the posistion and above average defenisvely.

but he doesn't SB so I guess he's not a good CFer?!

We do not need Juan Pierre 2.0 for the love of God. Cody Ross is a very good option until Maybin is ready, unlike those other pieces of ... that we've been linked to. I mean, atleast Lofton is good, but Cody's better defensively. But Podsensuck? COMMON

I'm sorry "cubsfan52" but I disagree about Maddux...he's having a great year and we wouldn't have to give up as much as we'd have to give up for someone like Burnett, Sabathia (which isn't happening), or the other "big names" out there.

Besides, Maddux is a professional, has playoff experience, doesn't get hurt, and would be a great teacher and influence to the younger people on the team.

The DBacks can definately find a use for Teixeira. With Eric Brynes out for awhile, they can move Jackson to left field. Getting Tex would definately wake up the offense. Question is do the DBacks give up the prospects when they probably won't sign him after the season?

I say with the Cubs have to get a pitcher now with the brew crew and cards only 3 1/2 back now. I say that Burnett and Harden should be the two we should go after. Just think of rotations like these would be great.

Zambrano
Harden
Dempster (Would he be 3rd or 4th in rotation?)
Lilly
Gallagher/ Marquis

or

Zambrano
Lilly
Dempster
Burnett
Gallagher

The one question is how we would get this guys? Hendry said he's not trading Gallagher. I do think that Murton, Hill, Marshall, Pie or Colvin could all be traded to some team this off season.

Whoa whoa whoa cubbies2008, Harden has been Mark Prior 2.0, are you sure you would even consider him, given the grief Prior has given you guys?
