« Phillies Interested In Mahay | Main | Mark Teixeira Traded To Angels »
TUESDAY: The Twins now have some competition from the Tigers for Hawkins.
MONDAY: According to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins have interest in bringing righty reliever LaTroy Hawkins back. Hawkins came up through the Twins' system as a starter, but eventually found his niche as a setup man before signing a free agent deal with the Cubs. Christensen talked to a person close to Hawkins who believes he'd like to come back to Minnesota.
Multiple teams have shown interest in Hawkins since the Yankees designated him for assignment. They might be able to unload some of the $1.25MM still owed to him. Hawkins lost a mile an hour off his fastball this year, and wasn't able to maintain the strong groundball and low walk rates he had in Colorado in '07.

i don't care, i'll take him, he is better than bass. But what we need to do is get rid of freakin Livan Hernandez and call up Liriano.

finally he needs to go

Seems like he would be a good risk for either of those teams, and I think that the Twins have an upper-hand..

Twins: Wilson Ramos and Edward Ovalle for LaTroy Hawkins.
-or-
Tigers: Max St.Pierre and JJ Sbor for LaTroy Hawkins and cash.
Both sides get what they need.

rossdafarian - You do realize that Hawkins was DFA'd? And, that Ramos and Ovalle are two of the Twins top hitters in high A ball and that both are well thought of prospects in the Twins organization? And, that teams do not surrender high value prospects for pitchers that are DFA's?
Your Yankees tried to rape the Twins for Santana and they wouldn't bite; now you think the Twins will give up two productve hitting prospects for the DFA'd Hawkins???
Get a clue!!

Bernie - Prospects are going to help you win the AL Central this year?
All you can hope they do is keep a key piece from a rival.
The Yankees can be very persuasive. Be careful of coveting players who won't make the majors regardless which team develops them.

If the Twins call up Liriano, isn't Livan the odd man out? If so, maybe a Livan for Hawkins swap? The Twins would be getting the shorter end of that deal but they might do it if the Yankees pay the remainder of both Hawkins and Hernandez' salaries.

rossdafarian - No, prospects are not going help us win the AL Central this year. And, I am not "coveting" Ramos and Ovalle! Latroy Hawkins is absolutely NOT a "key piece" for either the Twins or the Tigers; he is a player the Yankees are dumping who had some success with the Twins and might be useful.
High A ball prospects do not always become good major leaguers but some do. Teams value their High A ball prospects; the Yankees have several they are not going to give up easily either.
I have no doubt that the Twins would send the Yankees a marginal prospect for Hawkins but both Ramos and Ovalle rank much higher in the Twins eyes. Hawkins has only marginal value and he is not going to bring the Yankees a front line prospect! I can't imagine you believe the Yankees are so persuasive and the Twins so foolish that they would give up a valued prospect for a DFA'd player like Hawkins!

How would the Twins be getting the shorter end of that deal? Livan is one of the worst starters in MLB. He is absolutely dreadful. The man has allowed 190 hits in 135.2 innings. That's a .336 BAA. There is no way in hell the Yanks would make such a swap... Livan is useless and to think they'd pay for his salary and Hawkins' salary, too, is ridiculous.
Oh, and bernie, how were the Yankees trying to rape the Twins for Santana when the Twins were asking for Wang, Kennedy, Melky + 4th player for him? Oh yeah, there's a fair trade especially considering what they settled for from the Mets.
Back to Hawkins. If the Yanks can get a warm body for him while the Twins take on Hawkins' remaining salary, I'll be satisfied with the deal. Outside of a warm body, I'm not expecting much from the Twins or any other team.
