« Draft Roundup: Kelly, Scheppers, Inoa | Main | Latest On C.C. Sabathia »
According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, it's likely that scouts were on hand for Randy Wolf's start last night against the Rockies. Granted it was Coors Field, but seven earned runs in four innings did not help his stock. His previous start against the Mariners was also lousy. Wolf has pitched 102 innings over 18 starts. Last year, he was finished at the exact same point.
The Phillies and Cubs still might pursue Wolf, perhaps as a fallback. Steven Goldman recently made a good point in the New York Sun - Wolf and Greg Maddux have drastic home-road splits, and would probably only serve as back-end rotation upgrades for most contenders.

I still just dont get the appeal for this guy. As Goldman reports, he is just awful away from Petco ( i.e. the most pitcher friendly park in the NL).
If you are the cubs, how is this guy any better than Marshall?? To mention nothing of the fact that his career numbers at Wrigley are 1-4 with a 5+ERA. Ditto the phillies, how well will he do in that bandbox they play in? Both teams should view this guy as an absolute last resort.

Does Wolf induce 390 foot flyballs that are home runs in every other ball park but are long fly outs in Petco? Obviously he has pitched better at home and worse on the road, but you apply an appropriate park factor to account for those differences. There is no reason to think Wolf benefits more from Petco than the average pitcher, except maybe that 1 more ball in play out of every 20 is in the air.
Wolf's appeal is that he has 94 K's in 102 IP and over a 2-1 K/BB ratio.

RANDY WOLF: padres should trade him, what i think would work out great for both clubs is if WOLF gets traded to the yankees along with TONY CLARK, and maybe some minor leaguer, for WILSON BETEMIT and JEFF KARSTENS.
the yankees would get their help in the starting rotation and backup for GIAMBI, and the padres get infield help with BETEMIT and bullpen help with KARSTENS...who is a native san diegan?
