« Padres Rumors: Maddux, Wolf, Clark | Main | Yankees To Sign Eric Milton »
From Joel Sherman of the New York Post:
The Yankee problems against lefty pitching are so dire that they will meet in the next day or so to determine whether to make a play for Richie Sexson, Hardball has learned.
The Yankees have a .729 OPS against southpaws this year, which ranks 7th in the American League. Sexson has a 1.045 OPS against lefties this year, but it's only been 70 plate appearances. He was nothing special against lefties in 2006-07. Peter Abraham offers his take on the idea of signing Sexson over at his blog.

Can Sexson handle New York? I doubt it.

WHAT?!!! NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! If Brian Cashman signs Sexson he should be fired immediately. He should be fired for even considering Sexson. Not that I have anything against Sexson, but if Matsui is going to be out for the season then the Yankees HAVE to sign Barry Bonds.

Uh. wtf are you talking about? The Yankees currently are getting destoryed by every LHP that comes along. Sexson is currently hitting .344/.423/.623. It does not take Albert Einstein to put 2 and 2 together.

Sexson is currently hitting .344/.423/.623.
Against LHP obvously.**

And to that note, the Mets should also be looking into Sexson as a possible platoon for Carlos Delgado and I dont know, maybe he could even get into LF a couple of times. They can use the pop vs LHP.

Who cares? This is a guy who's hitting .218. Of course he's better against lefties, he's a right-handed hitter. But you have to acknowledge that Sexson only has 61 AB against lefties this season versus 191 AB against righties. Give me another lefty bat who can dominate any pitcher like Bonds over Sexson any day. Remember, Sexson's going to face righties the majority of the time...and he's going to get out the majority of the time. Do the Yankees really need that if they want to win this year?

Sexson would obviously fit, but I don't get why they are struggling against lefties to begin with. A-Hole and Jeter are both RHB, Abreu is hitting lefties better than righties, as is Cano who actually can't hit righties this year. Giambi's numbers aren't THAT far off, Matsui is raking against lefties for average if not for as much power and Damon is respectable. The only one in the lineup who is really struggling is Melky, who can't really hit anyone these days.

"Give me another lefty bat who can dominate any pitcher like Bonds over Sexson any day."
See, but the thing is that I think people have to accept that Barry Bonds is not an option. Or at least not an option to essentially every single front office in baseball. He's been by far the best available hitter on the market for like the past 8 months and nobody has bit. He lowered his demands to nil, essentially saying he'll play for free. Nobody bit. The guy is simply not an option.
Considering that I think Sexson would be a good addition for either New York team. The guy is a year and a half removed from consecutive quality seasons with 34+ homers and he's still only 33.
I'm not saying he'll ever come even close to those numbers again, but you have to admit that he's a guy worth taking a flier on when your team can't hit lefties for shitt.

AA, to counter your points about the Yankees struggling against lefties:
A-Rod missed about a month. So while he's been hitting great, Wilson Betemit's time at third really drags down the average.
Posada missed even more time than A-Rod, with Jose Molina stinking in his place.
Abreu is having one of his worst seasons, so it's not saying much if he hits lefties better.
Matsui has been gone for weeks and will be out a few more, forcing both Gardner & Melky into the lineup, neither of which is hitting.

What do they have to lose? They'll be paying him the pro-rated minimum, and if he stinks they just cut him. Low risk, high reward. What's the worst that could happen?

Sexson makes a little sense for the Yanks if he's used strictly as a starter against lefties and as a pinch hitter against lefties, but specialty pinch hitters can backfire simply by replacing the reliever with a righty. Sexson's numbers against lefties are great, but it is followed up with truly horrendous numbers against righties.

I'm not a Yankee fan, but it would make sense for them to give Sexson a shot at the major league minimum if they need someone to mash lefties. If he works out, great. If not, cut him. Like someone above said, low risk, high reward.
It's exactly what the Cubs did with Jim Edmonds. His numbers were god-awful and every scout that saw him said he was finished. They took a flyer on him for the minimum salary and he's been raking ever since he got there. Sexson could be the exact same type of acquisition.

Prorated league minimum for:
.265/.368/.510 career in 1327 PA vs LHP.
Cashman has had worse ideas.

Even though I'd prefer a contact hitter rather than an "all or nothing" power hitter, he has to be upgrade over Shelley Duncan or Wilson Betemit.
As far their struggles against lefties, even really mediocre pitchers - Jorge is still out of sync, Melkey is out classed at the MLB level, and Jeter has been downright dreadful at the plate this season.

Signing Sexson just really makes a lot of sense. An experienced power bat off the bench/lefty platoon improves the team. The worst that could happen is to lose a few hundred thousand.
I hate to say it, but I'm actually enjoying the fact that nobody will sign Bonds. I hope the GMs are trying to make a statement about him to everyone. Talk about embarrassing for the all time home run leader. Can't even get a team to sign him for the league min....

Coming into the season Sexson had a .244/.289 split that's first half (pre All-Star game)/second half (post All-Star game)... So he's about 20 points below his career average for 1st half production, not exactly time to ring the bell... The Mariners are run poorly and Sexson has done well with his new stance and should've been close to .235 by the break had they not jerked him around with his at bats... That would be less than 10 points below his career average and he hits around 65% of his homeruns in the second half of the season, so that means that he's on course for 30 HRs again... Another normal Sexson season, they just didn't want to keep him around long enough to make the fans started asking for his return and/or they wanted to make room for LaHair now, to see if they need to find a 1B in the offseason... But there you go, analyze splits until you are blue in the face, but the only one that matters is his 1st half/2nd half splits taht say he's about on par with his normal numbers... Also, check out his home/away splits and you'll see that lefty/righty is a mute point... Sexson is a good pick-up and anybody that thinks otherwise should take themself outside and kick their own ass to save the mob from having to come to your house to do it for you... The Yankees suck, they can use anything that can be thrown in their general direction... Posada will have to become the DH, so they need a platoon partner for Giambi, so it's not like Sexson will start all the time...

Yes, I know I'm the fire truck painting the wagon red by calling out the Yankees (yes I know that's not the real metaphor, but work with me here!), but for a team that's got 200MM, if you aren't atleast winning the wild card even with half your team injured, then it's a bad season, when you are getting your ass stomped by every team in baseball except the very worst teams in the league, except Kansas City who did all right for themselves anyways, you don't deserve the praise of being called a team on the rise or struggling... The Yankees just suck, so acting like you are better than picking up a Richie Sexson is just stupid! Let's be real here, you paid more for Posada than what Sexson is making this year and in the season when most catchers bodies break down, but Posada's different right?! That's why he's on the DL, huh?! Shouldn't have been signed for 8MM a season because he's just a DH and spot starter behind the plate and horrible at catching runners I might add! You basically have a GM that paid 200MM to field a team that's not all together different than an older version of the Pirates... Considering their track record and the depreciation of ability when you start adding years to their age, then you have major problems.. I would be surprised if the Yankees don't finish at or below .500 by the end of the season! Sorry for the rant, but Yankee arrogance is just annoying with their I can't be bothered to pick up a player who has been released, but yet I can accept playing a 15MM bat boy...

What's arrogant about not wanting a guy who's hitting .218 who can only play 1B/DH ??? I call that foresight.

Yes,the yanks have to sign sexson we need better hitters against lefties. The yanks would have a great lineup if sexson joined pinstripes.
Lineup:
1.Damon
2.Jeter
3.Abreu
4.Rodriguez
5.Giambi
6.Sexson
7.Posada
8.Cano
9.Cabrera

The yankees really can't sign Sexson. Hes only able to play 1b/dh. They have Giambi and Betemit platooning at 1st and at dh they have Giambi/posada/matsui/damon. Both matsui and damon are coming off leg injuries so they likely wont be able to play the field. Posadas are is a joke right now so Molina is the every day catcher. Even if they thought he'd be a great upgrade to their lineup there is no place to put him. They do need a right handed bat though the outfield is the only place where they can add a player. Melky should be sent down to relearn how to hit. And while Sexson is cheap i wouldnt expect money to play a factor here. From the players standpoint, hes in a contract year so i dont see him signing anywhere expect for a club that will give him serious playing time. Which the yankees cant.
On a side note, Tim i know your busy but surely you can do something about posters who offer no baseball talk in their posts but badger and inappropriately insult other posters.
