A lot of crappy, inconconsequential moves going back and forth. The more noteable ones before 2005 was losing Gaudin and gaining Ted Lilly for Bobby Kielty.
The Overbay vs. Dave Bush trade seems like a wash. Bush was cheaper with more years of service time, and would be a back of the rotation pitcher for the Jays. Overbay is a below average hitting 1b with above average defense...so he's about average. He cost a little more...their marginal values are not that far apart.
Hudson for Glaus and eventually Rolen was also not an organization-changer. It could go either way. Though we'll see how Rolen plays out his contract and if he's worth the 22 million over 2 years, which he MIGHT be with that defense.
Other than that nothing big at all, except for a few small moves to make up a bullpen (which he's done very well - getting Tallet, Accardo, Frasor, and Wolfe for not very much, while letting go of Mastny and Rosario).

As always, he's avoided major mistakes but made no real steals, and overall probably is a little above average in his trade profile, but no impact trades were made.

There weren't many "big" moves.
The Vernon Wells signing was horrible though.
At least the Blue Jays like baseball.

Nabbing Lilly from Billy was nice. Letting Carpenter get away was a bit of an "oops!" move in retrospect, but he hadn't really proved that he was anything special at that point. And how is it that I've never heard the names "Stubby Clapp" and "Bubbie Buzachero" before?

Hillenbrand and Chulk for Accardo was amazing, especially considering Shae was DFA'd after Gibbons beat him up.
Looks like the ship that was sinking was Shae's career.

"Hillenbrand and Chulk for Accardo was amazing, especially considering Shae was DFA'd after Gibbons beat him up."
Exactly. If you don't call that a steal, I don't know what is.
At the time Hinske and Miller for Koch turned out to be a great win for the Jays, but Hinske faded quickly, so it was a wash.
Lilly pick up was great.
Gaudin for Kevin Cash was a good pickup, too bad JP gave him away.
Picking up Glaus was a pretty good move, but this first year of Rolen is garbage. We'll have to see how next year goes. Also Santos was a pretty good prospect at the time, but was a bust.
Scutaro was a pretty good pick up, though nothing major.
Thomas was the only real bad signing, he had a great first year so who would have known.
Draft picks are starting to look very good as well.

Also dumping Koskie for Wolfe looks like it will turn into a great move. Wolfe has been very good the last couple years, and was in AAA only because he has options.

I know Rolen has missed time, but you could do worse than how he has performed this year. It's hard to find a good 3b, and he has a 99 OP+, in other words is a league average hitter, and one of the best defensive 3b in the game...so overall an above average player. Still, the lineup could use some power.

Two weeks ago, my brother suggested to me that JP's best trade during his GM tenure with the Jays has been trading for Marco Scutaro. I naturally disagreed with him, thinking JP must have had atleast ONE significantly better trade in his 7 years as GM.
But after reading through this spreadsheet... the ONLY trades I see that MIGHT be better is the one for Accardo and the one for Lilly.
Oh and uhhh... if you want, you can replace the PTBNL for Robinzon Diaz in the trade for Jose Bautista.

Justin Spier was a great deal and Catalanotto was a great signing - both were type A free agents when they left too.

Looks like the ship that was sinking was Shae's career.

I couldnt agree more, by the way..where is he now?
Posted by: kingfelix93 | September 05, 2008 at 10:54 PM
Well, kingfelix93, he wasn't signed by any teams in the '08 offseason, but he was approached by the Giants.
Then he signed with the New York Revolution in the independant Atlantic League. Hillenbrand played in 36 games for the Revolution hitting .340 with two home runs and 25 RBIs before his season was ended by a hamstring injury.
So in other words, he's screwed.

Letting Carpenter go was his worst move off all time....and why the hell would you switch Glaus with Rollen....the guy is hitting, .275 with over 20 homeruns....i think his best move of all was bringing Gaston back as the GM....
Posted by: jays4life | September 06, 2008 at 04:44 PM
Of course. Glaus asked to leave to get away from the turf....so that could be one reason you do that trade. Another would be is Glaus probably wouldn't have been able to put those numbers with the Jays

And bringing in Accardo was the best move. How Rios for Linecum was almost done is crazy, that'd of been such a steal.
Posted by: dybbuk | September 17, 2008 at 12:53 AM
how about the deal he didn't make? Lincecum 4 Rios. Imagine Halladay 1 Lincecum 2
