Yankees Or Retirement For Pettitte, Again

Andy Pettitte has been pitching through shoulder pain in recent months, and he's finally been shut down.  He told reporters yesterday he will choose between the Yankees and retirement for 2009.  Pettitte added that the Yankees "pretty much let it be known they'd like to have me back."

Pettitte would probably not require the same $16MM he did this year (George King says a the Yankees want him back for "a lot less money.")  If he's willing to pitch for $12MM or so, I don't know why the Yankees wouldn't bring him back.

Pettitte needs to retire hes old and the yankees need to stop clinging onto there old stars except for moe.

I'm torn on this deision. I think the Yanks need to bring back one of Moose or Pettite, just so the staff has a solid veteran on it. Moose probably has a better shot at performing well, but Pettite could probably give us league average numbers for less money/years, as well as gain a draft pick by letting Moose walk, whereas we could gain nothing by letting Pettite retire.

Its a tough call, and I for one have yet to really make up my mind.

I believe that the possibility of Pettitte's return will depend on a couple of circumstances.

First, the Yankees will probably be more inclined to sign Pettitte if Mussina retires. Mussina will probably retire if he receives his 20th win on Sunday, since it's the only part of his resume that analysts look for when determining his status as a Hall of Famer. If he doesn't get the win, he'll try to get to 300 wins to seal his HOF spot, and the Yankees will sign him on for the publicity. They really only need one of the two veterans, since they're most likely going to get a limb of the Big Three (Sabathia, Sheets, Burnett).

It may also depend on whether Joba Chamberlain stays in the rotation. To get to the point, if the Joba stays in the pen, Pettitte will be signed to fill in a spot.

Right now, the Yankee's rotation is very vague, with Wang and four ????'s following.

The yanks should subtract Pettitte and Mussina from the 2009 yanks

Pettite is still as solid of a lefty as your going to find. He's going to train hard in the offseason to give himself a shot at competing again next year. However, I don't see him being effective much longer. He's lost 2-3MPH on that cutter inside to righty's which has made him near completely ineffective against them.

Mussina though i used to think they should resign. I think they could get a deal struck with him for 2/22MM with incentives for 2/25-26MM if he can keep the ERA down (below 4.00) and win 15+ games. However, I also think he may be rendered ineffective after the players get a summer of watching tapes on his new found breaking pitch success. However, that curve/knucklecurve has looked better this year than it ever has since he joined the Yankees, so perhaps his success will continue.

btw i believe pettite is only 37? maybe 38? he's not that old. he just needs to relearn to pitch to righties.

If it wasn't for Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina, the Yankees would have been eliminated from playoff contention in, like, August. Come on, these 2 were much more than just "solid" for them this year. To think that they stayed in it so long, without Chien-Ming Wang? That's impressive, and it's all because of those 2 veterans. The offense has been nothing special, however, even as a Red Sox fan, I'll say it was because of injuries. That much is very true. Posada, A-Rod, Matsui, Damon, and even Betemit, all missed time this year. The offense never really got the time to "click" and develop any kind of a synergy. Toss in the injuries to Wang, Joba, and even Pettitte and Pavano. This team should have been in the race for the East, however, injuries decimated them greatly.

For really keeping the team in the picture for so long, I would like to see them bring both Pettitte and Mussina back. I've always liked Mussina, ever since he was an Oriole, and Pettitte has always been solid, for anyone (Yankees or Astros) at any time. Reward them both and bring them back.

Now, I can wait for the true Yankees fans to either bash my opinion, or bash my team lol.

I'll agree that Moose was a huge plus this year for the Yanks. His performance was outstanding considering his age and his 2007 campaign. He absolutely had one of the most shocking seasons in the AL.

Pettitte, on the other hand, has looked incredibly average. A 4.54 ERA is about as LA as you get. For $16m the Yanks got minimal return for their investment.

You look at a guy like Washburn. Someone who has a $10m contract. He pitched 50 less innings but has a very similar ERA. Washburn was basically being given away. I don't see much difference between the two. If Washburn is a candidate to get dumped why would Pettitte be considered an anchor?

Anyway, I would resign Pettitte if he agreed to a 1/8 type deal with incentives. I would definitely resign Moose (although I think it will take more than $11m to get the deal done). You can still sign Sabathia/Sheets/Burnett. Having too much starting pitching is hardly ever a problem. Why not have a little insurance especially when you have a payroll north of $200m?

The Yankees need to part ways with Pettitte he's not good anymore and he's old, they need to focus on young players and build for the future

I'm not a Yankees fan, so maybe this is incorrect... but JT89, isn't that the same thing people thought about Moose after the 2007 season?

If they can get Pettitte for around $10MM, or as suggested (even better) an $MM with incentives... I think the Yanks should do it.

Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, and a combination of Hughes and a solid FA is a nice rotation. Or you can always slot Joba back in there.

Either way, I think it's a good move for the Yanks to bring back their veterans if they've still got something left in the tank.

Pettitte needs to go. He's done. He's got no heart. he's been whining about retirement for years now. Hang 'em up Andy...and make room on the roster for a kid who loves the game. You could have been a HOFer if you had the guts.

Which kid is that? Ineffective Ian Kennedy, injury riddled Hughes, or some other unknown "kid" who deserves to start on a team with a $200m payroll.

Your'e actually wrong. If Pettite had won at least half of his last 10 games the Yankees would have been in it. He was like 1-7 ERA around 6. The Yanks were 1-9 when he started

He thinks he is Brett Favre. The offseason is always filled with the same "will I retire" game. Andy seems like a good enough guy, but he is not good enough that people will care if he retires outside of NY, and coming off this season, I am not even so sure if Yankee fans care. Make a decision and let the Yankees move on early during the off-season, if they even offer to bring him back.
