A look at what is being written around the Blogosphere...
- MetsBlog recognizes that Francisco Rodriguez will improve the team and appease fans, but is not sure he is worth a four or five-year deal.
- Mets Geek projects the Mets '09 roster and looks at some options from outside the organization with Pat Burrell and Derek Lowe being the biggest offseason targets.
- Was Watching says bringing back Brian Cashman was a mistake.
- River Ave. Blues assesses the Matt Holliday market and feels that Phil Hughes and Robinson Cano for Holliday "doesn't make much sense."
- Sox and Pinstripes provides an in-depth preview of the upcoming offseasons for the Yankees and Red Sox and wonders if Theo Epstein can convince the Rockies to take J.D. Drew and a top prospect for Matt Holliday.
- iYankees notes that Brian Cashman wants to make the Yankees' OBP a priority this winter and feels Mark Teixeira fits the bill.
- Oriole Post does not want to see Mike Mussina return to the O's and would prefer they "stay the course" with young players.
- C70 At The Bat takes a look at the Cardinals' decision to sign Kyle Lohse and what it could mean for the offseason ahead.
- Viva el Birdos projects the Cardinals '09 roster and payroll.
- McCovey Chronicles reacts to some quotes from Brian Sabean and what they mean for the Giants' offseason.
- Newberg Report thinks the price for the Rangers to acquire Jake Peavy would be too high, even if he'd waive his no-trade clause to go there.
- Athletics Nation sees no point in signing Jason Giambi.

Hey this has nothing to do with this post but I have the opportunity to buy Cubs tickets to the NLCS. I know it is unlikely that they are going to make it now but do your tickets get refunded if they don't make it? I'd like to go to the playoffs for the first time but don't want to throw away money.

Yanks should trade R. Cano and P. Hughes for 09

Drew + Any prospect not named Lars Anderson or Clay Buchholz. Done Deal.
I can't see the Rockies accepting for any reason other than wanting to help Boston win a world series, but who cares.

Holliday won't go anywhere. Rockies could easily win that division.
Closers are overrated. Why spend 1/10th of your payroll on someone that will play less than 1% of possible innings? (9 players X 9 innings X 162 games = 13,222 possible innings). Find someone with a little talent and alot of balls.

I wouldn't trade Drew for Holliday straight up. A guy with terrible home-road splits for his career with one year left on his contract and no defensive value? No thank you. I'll take Drew and his injury problems, especially if a prospect has to be thrown in.

"Drew + Any prospect not named Lars Anderson or Clay Buchholz. Done Deal."
If they're willing to throw in Taylor Buchholz and Manny Corpas we're willing to give them David Pauley.
But seriously, the point of trading Holliday is to not have to pay someone a lot of money. If the Rockies were going to pay 15M for Drew it seems they'd get far more bang for their buck if they threw an extra 5M in there and keep Holliday. I'll avoid the other reasons why it's an idiotic idea to even bring up a Holliday for Drew and prospect deal.
Other than that... the only team that I can think of besides the yanks that a) can afford Holliday b) has the farm to trade for him c) can make a spot for him, are the dodgers.

Neither Bay nor Holliday can play RF in Fenway. The only way i see Holliday on the Sox is if we let Bay walk after next year and sign Holliday.
Posted by: drchstrpunk | October 03, 2008 at 02:08 PM
it would take bucholez drew and possibly someone to get holliday. the rockies have turned down some deals that were a lot better than that. they turned the phillies offer of meyers, carrasco, happ and marson for holliday
Posted by: derman1984 | October 03, 2008 at 02:28 PM
burrell to the mets is highly unlikely, it would take about 15-18 mil a year over 4 years for him to play there. and if you want to give him that type of contract have fun

Start Wearing Purple, the Yankees can only fit Holliday if he can play center, which AFAIK he can't. The Yankees really don't want to play Damon in center.

"the Yankees can only fit Holliday if he can play center"
They would have to be creative and basically offer up Damon or Matsui for pennies on the dollars. Or Damon mentioned last year he could possibly play first (not sure how that experiment ever turned out). I more brought up the yanks as a don't count them out scenario. But yeah, you are right, all else being equal, I have definite doubts of Holliday being in pinstripes in 09.

I don't know where everybody is getting that Holliday is a butcher in the field. He's gotten progressively better every year and at this point is well above average in left.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say the Yankees significantly change their roster for 2009. Here are my proposed moves:
Trades:
CF Nate McLouth
1B Adam LaRoche
for
2B Robinson Cano
OF Melky Cabrera
SP Ian Kennedy
SP Jeffrey Marquez
LF Matt Holliday
for
SP Phil Hughes
SP Chase Wright
LF Johnny Damon
Free Agents:
2B Orlando Hudson
SP Jon Garland
Resign:
SP Andy Pettitte (assuming Mussina retires)
RP Damaso Marte
Here is my projected lineup and rotation:
CF Nate McLouth
SS Derek Jeter
DH Hideki Matsui
3B Alex Rodriguez
LF Matt Holliday
1B Adam LaRoche
RF Xavier Nady
C Jorge Posada
2B Orlando Hudson
SP Chien-Ming Wang
SP Joba Chamberlain
SP Jon Garland
SP Andy Pettitte
SP Alfredo Aceves
Accounting for all the free-agent signees, arbitration-eligible players, and trade acquisitions, this Yankees payroll would be around $185 million. It’s a bit of a stretch, but I’d like to hear what you think.

garland has a 1.50 whip no so ill pass on him and trade damon kennedy and marquez for holliday
Posted by: Cano24 | October 03, 2008 at 09:11 PM
I decided to go with Garland because he's a type B free agent, which means the Yankees wouldn't lose a first round draft pick. With the Yankees offering arbitration to Abreu, the Hudson signing would cause a wash.
I believe the Rockies were looking for frontline starters. Hughes has very good potential, and adding Damon would allow them to keep a left fielder. Wright would slightly sweeten the deal.

That is a big change for the yankees. But i'm not convinced wang is an ace and I think the yankees will go crazy for sabathia. They'll get a big name pitcher before they get another cleanup hitter. Whether it be sabathia or someone through a trade.
Posted by: shaddix | October 04, 2008 at 09:41 AM
Cashman feels like a fool for not getting santana last year, and more so because hughes and kennedy did so poorly. Look for him and steinbrenner to throw lots of money at sabathia to make up for last years chance at santana.

"Neither Bay nor Holliday can play RF in Fenway. The only way i see Holliday on the Sox is if we let Bay walk after next year and sign Holliday."
If Holliday can play left a Coors he can play right at Fenway.

addymaster04,
r u high? have u EVER seen a dodegrs game? given how dewitt has come of age at 2 positions this yr, and how kemp is showing not 5 tools, but 6 now, patience, there is no way in HELL the dodgers trade kemp for cano. on another note, can anyone see the rockies REALITISCLY tradeing matt hoilday to the dodgers? unless they get kemp, which the dodgers wont do, i dont personally see anyway they can match up for a trade with a player as good/young as holiday.

lakersdodgersyankees4life
your right kemp is a great player who the dodgers would pro wana keep..but if furcol signes with someone else the might have to put dewitt at ss then have to get a 2b whitch is where cano fills in-the dodgers have plenty of outfield to go around witch is why i think this (cano-kemp) deal will go trough, if the yankees trough in 1 or 2 prospects
