Why shouldn't the Marlins offer arb to Gonzo? His 2008 salary was $2 million, which isn't bad for someone of his remaining skills (good eye, left-handed, decent power, some speed, decent defense other than the arm). Even if he accepted, he wouldn't be in line for much of a raise.

Kinda surprising that Alou made type B. He's been great the last two years when he's played but he's only got 377 AB's combined. Can't see anyone giving him anything more than a make-good type deal, 1-yr $1 million with incentives. Wonder if he would even play for that? With as much physical trouble as he has it might not be worth it to him.

"$2 million is pocket change for the big market teams these days but for the Marlins that's a significant percentage of payroll. While it's not much it still might be hard for them to justify it for someone who isn't young or really an everyday player anymore. If they do get rid of Hermida as has been speculated I could see them trying to keep Gonzo though, he could be useful to them."

Its not about some sort of effort to re-sign the guy, it is about getting a sandwich pick for him.

I think you answered your own question. Alou's numbers are so good when he plays that they combine with the DL bonus to make him a Type B.
