Time to collect today's Manny Ramirez rumors.
- Scott Boras tells Yahoo's Tim Brown that Manny pays for himself. Brown says the Giants are "believed to be considering" Manny; they similarly signed an aging Barry Bonds to a large extension back in '02 (four years with an option). Brown feels the American League is a better fit for Manny, though.
- Ken Davidoff of Newsday talked to an NL exec who believes Manny will get four years. He has a hard time figuring which team will seriously compete with the Dodgers for Ramirez. If Boras succeeds in starting a bidding war, maybe he gets five years.
- Peter Abraham says six years would be "madness," and sees the Dodgers going four years. He predicts Ramirez re-signs with them after much drama. Sounds reasonable.
- The Phillies continue to be tossed around as a solid fit for Manny; Joel Sherman mentioned it yesterday.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Manny Ramirez Rumors: Monday:
Go Braves!! Sign Manny. Manny for $20 mill. Peavy for $11 mill. That still leaves $9 mill for one more starting pitcher. Not that we'd get much for $9 mill but maybe enough to keep us in the game with a 3-4-5 of Chipper, Manny, McCann.

Cubs sign him, move Soriano back to 2nd Base, and rest their regulars often.
Of course, the Cubs would still lose

Hey Dierkes- any chances he could come to Philly to replace Burrell in LF?
Posted by: rocman101 | October 20, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Nevermind, saw the column. Still, I dont like Dobbs in LF, like him much better as 3B/PH.

Manny in Philly. That could be interesting. I love 'em but Philly fans would be ruthless if Manny starts his "act" up again.

Manny in Toronto, I hope. 4 years $80M. Wouldn't go anymore than that, as it's pushing it already.

your kinda of right but with a player like Manny i dont think it would matter that much as long he protected Howard in the line-up. manny in the phils line-up that would be a very scary line-up. with rollins, manny, utley howard

This would be a strange move by the Giants. They already have four outfielders capable of starting, Manny's bat would not be enough to push them into contention, it would leave a hole at either 3B or 2B in the infield, and it goes against the entire idea of getting younger players rather than veterans to build for the future. If they're going to pay this much money, they should just go all out and try for Tex, who would fit much better into the organization's longterm plan.

No one in their right mind would put Soriano at 2nd Base. Yes it is where he started... but they moved him to left for a reason.
You see some of the awful plays he makes in left field? ... There's a reason he's still there... it's still better than his skill at 2nd.

Wasn't it orginally because Vidro was at 2B?
Posted by: juiced | October 20, 2008 at 01:31 PM
I cant see the Phillies laying out the dough. And MickS is totally right - if Manny thought Boston was tough - Philly aint much better. One year - we may be able to make it though - but 4 years - thats an albatross waiting to happen.
I like Dobbs in LF - its easier than 3B.

Manny on the Giants? I'll believe it when I see it. Does Brian Sabean actually think signing Manny will lead them to the postseason? That team has more wide open holes than Paris Hilton.

"Wasn't it orginally because Vidro was at 2B?"
That and Soriano was a butcher at second.

Dodgers should re-sign Manny to an $85M, 3 yr, guaranteed, front-loaded, deal, w/ a 4th year mutual option. Something like '09-$30M, '10-$28M, '11-$27M.

Dodgers won't frontload anything. Anything done by the Dodgers will probably be backloaded, with the money for Schmidt, Jones, Pierre, still on the books. And, it isn't really business smart to frontload.

aj7380 -
Wow man, no offense, but that is a completely horrible contract. While we are at it, lets give CC 35 mill a year for 8 years.

ROFLMAO! More like $45M/3yrs. He's not in A-Rod's league, not even close. Put manny at 3rd base and the first grounder he sees will hit him right between the eyes. Couldn't steal a base, legitimately, to save his life, and you'll notice that NOBODY even thinks of mentioning mammy when they talk of breaking Bond's homerun record.
There's only one thing that funnier than $85M/3yrs: manny in Philly - he'd run back to the dugout every time they booed him, which would be lots considering he slacks off way more than he hustles. Philly is home of the biggest BOO birds in the world, they even boo guys who are doing relatively well.
BTW, who else thinks manny stinks of steroids? Nobody bumps his average by over 100 points for half the season without some kind of performance enhancement.

"He's not in A-Rod's league, not even close"
You are joking, right? A-Rod is a HOF hitter, but Manny is even better. Better contact, better eye, better power. The only one better is Pujols.
"BTW, who else thinks manny stinks of steroids? Nobody bumps his average by over 100 points for half the season without some kind of performance enhancement."
Steroids don't work like that. It takes use over time to build up some sort of advantage.
Posted by: AA | October 20, 2008 at 06:08 PM
Yes, Manny has had a HOF career, but that doesn't make him A-Rod at the moment. I'd rather have A-Rod on my team than Manny; even Scott Boras has stopped short of selling Manny that high.
As far as the claim that he's on steroids because he bumped his average over 100 points, that happens relatively often, and isn't a result of steroids. Sometimes players see the ball better than others.

have u ever watched manny? u really think manny would use steroids? he prob gets tested as much as arod, pujols, and any other big sluggers. the last thing he would want is to be found to use drugs! remember, the nl west has similar pitching, prob less than the al east, so hitting 400 for manny isnt surprising. remember, he was hitting like 450 the last 2 weeks before he got traded

The Giants likely will pass on Ramirez. Although if they did sign him, the could trade both Randy Winn and Bengie Molina while keeping Pablo Sandoval at C and Travis Ishikawa at 1B. The Giants could move Fred Lewis to RF and use Nate Schierholtz as a 4th OF for now until they figure out what to do, alhtough like I said, that is very unlikely. A more likely scenario is trade Winn and make Schierholtz the everyday RF, to see how is power develops at the big league level.

Being a long time red sox fan I believe Manny will do exactly what he did while with the sox,he will dog it on occasion, plain and simple. Not worth a long term contract. For all he did for the red sox,he is not a "Derek Jeter".Which is,play 100% every day.PS...I hate the Evil Empire BTW
