« Offseason Outlook: Toronto Blue Jays | Main | Mets Re-Sign Jerry Manuel »
5:16pm: Helms will receive $1.9MM over the two years.
3:54pm: According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Marlins signed infielder Wes Helms to a two-year extension. Helms had a $3.75MM option for '09 with a $750K buyout. Terms aren't known yet, but the Fish probably didn't give him that much for '09.
Helms, 32, hit .243/.299/.347 in 278 plate appearances while playing the infield corners as needed.

So they don't want to have to pay Uggla or anyone else who is valuable at the plate, but they want to pay Helms for two years....
Yea that makes sense.

actually that's a steal since they had to pay 750k to buy him out anyway. Only an additional 1.15 mil (575k per year) to keep him around for 2 years. If they let him go and signed another guy at league min to replace Helms then they lose on the deal.

a great deal, to get him in the first place ($1 for 2008), and now. even though right now, helms look overpaid to all the other marlins, they get paid eventually.

Why not just buy him out and bring up McPherson?

Solid backup 1B/3B last year for Florida and if they got him for less than 4-5M over 2 years, might be less than he would have gotten on the market this year with the shortage of 3B options.
This guy can still play both 1st and 3B pretty well and is more than capable of filling in on a team if an injury hits someone for several weeks.
Surprised he did not wait for FA period to hit, he probably could have gotten a job with a major contender doing same thing and maybe better money as well. Yanks, Red Sox, Rays, Phillies and several other teams come to mind right off that will be needing a solid 1b/3B +RH PH next year.
