« Type A/B Free Agents | Main | Cardinals Sign Jason LaRue »
According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, Rangers GM Jon Daniels will open up discussions to acquire starting pitching at next week's GM meetings. Specifically, Daniels could deal from his catching surplus or trade Hank Blalock. The Rangers will first need to pick up Blalock's $6.2MM option for 2009. One thing to keep in mind about Blalock is that his ability to play third base regularly is in question.
Sullivan names all kinds of potential targets and trading partners - the Mariners, Giants, Rays, Marlins, Reds, Red Sox, and many more. Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported this morning that the Rangers (and Indians) inquired on Scott Olsen.

The Mariners might be a good trade partner? How does this make sense? They M's have a logjam of catchers and have Beltre at 3rd. These are basically 2 of the only positions the M's don't need.

What could the Rays want from the Rangers? They have Dionner, so they don't need a catcher and they have Evan, so they don't need a 3rd baseman.
Because of their pitching surplus, are they going to be linked to every team in baseball?

They might have something else to offer for the Rays SP. And don't rule out possible 3 way deals including the Rays as well.

The Indians are hoping that the Rangers hurry up and trade a catcher so that the going rate for Shoppach can be established.
Posted by: MickS | October 31, 2008 at 04:36 PM
the Rays could use Blalock as a DH.

The Marlins do not need catching help with Baker at .299/.392/.447 who was improving week by week.
Olsen would get LAMBASTED at the Ballpark, as would half the other spares he listed. Maybe TR tailors his articles knowing how dumb Daniels is I don't know, but most of that article makes no sense.

randam12:

The idea of the Reds overpaying for a Catcher this year is just stupid.
Are they going to be contenders in 2009? Doubtful. Would getting Laird, Saltalamachia or Shoppach make them into contenders? No. So WHY overpay for a Catcher this year?
I say let the REAL contenders battle it out and overpay for the mediocre Catchers. Just like I said last year when rumors were floating around that the Reds were going after Erik Bedard.
If the Reds want a REAL Catcher, they should try and trade for Bengie Molina. IF they want a backup Catcher, then they should resign David Ross.
Last year, Ross was the BETTER Catcher than Paul Bako but because Bako was one of Baker's Boys, he was (STUPIDLY) kept and Ross was cut.
So, if they can't trade for Molina, then sign Ross for 2009 and then wait for Molina to be a Free Agent in 2010.

Kinsler5:
Probably not..I was just throwing it out there with an effort to not make too ridiculous of an offer...Boston is probably too high on Bucholtz to make that deal but money aside (don't know all the figures)it seems pretty fair both ways to me.

If I were the Reds I would do a Bailey for Teagarden or Salty deal any day of the week.

Blalock has been broken down the past two seasons...how is his shoulder?

Bucholtz and Lowell for Salty and Blalock? I'm sure the Rangers would jump on that, but why on earth would Boston ever make a trade like that? Surely if Bucholtz is made trade bait, you can get a lot more for him.
The problem with Blalock is that he hasn't really been able to play third for awhile now. I don't see him going to a team that would have to count on him for 500 AB at 3rd. He might make a good DH for someone, though.
I think Salty will get traded back to the NL.
If the Rangers could get Miller for Salty, I'd do that. But I hope JD stays away from Olson - he'd give up 100 homers in Arlington.

I think the Rangers will actively try to persuade Cincy that they REALLY want Laird in exchange for Bailey, not Salty.

I don't think the Red Sox should give up Clay Buchholz for Saltalamacchia. I don't think they should trade him at all. His problem is not that his stuff regressed, he is simply inconsistent at this point. I saw one of his starts in person this year (incidentally the same game Lugo got hurt, which i said at the time would benefit the Sox by giving Lowrie a chance) and he gave up 4 runs in 5 innings. He gave up 2 runs each in 2 innings, had an inning in which he let a couple guys on but got out of it, and in the other 2 innings, he struck out 5 of the 6 batters he faces and commanded his fastball extraordinarily well. My point is, there's too much there to give up on him. it's just an adjustment to the majors (albeit a rough one).

I can't see Salty costing Buchholz. A package centered around Bowden or Masterson should be enough.
As hyped as Salty was, he's lost a lot of that buzz, especially with the off chance he can't stick at C.

The White Sox might be a sleeper in this derby. Mainly for Hank Blalock. They have Javier Vazquez to offer, a proven pitcher signed at a reasonably decent price.

I could see the Mariners going after Blalock if they move Beltre. I think the A's will be in on both Beltre and Blalock as crazy as that sounds considering their both inner-division. The A's HAVE to do something about the gaping hole at 3B. Chavez can't be counted on until he can prove he can keep his arm attached, his back loose, and his legs pain free and I don't think we ever see that again personally.

To Red Sox Dynasty: First, they aren't shopping Teagarden - he's the one they want to keep according to various inside reports (basing this on what I've read from some DFW bloggers). Second, while I think Salty isn't enough to get Bucholtz, I don't think Masterson is enough to get Teagarden. I expect that the only way they'd consider moving Teagarden is if someone blew them away with a huge offer - and by huge I mean top talent.
To jpshark:
I've heard those rumors about Blalock to Seattle, but I'd like to reiterate that Blalock's back & shoulder have given him so much trouble that it would appear his 3rd base playing days are over.
What I'd like to see from the Rangers - in a perfect world where these kinds of trades actually get made - is:
Murphy for Sonnanstine
Laird for Homer Bailey
Blalock for Vasquez
Resign Bradley
Sign a couple of FA relievers, one being Chad Cordero.
Trade Salty to the A's for Street.
(one can dream, right?)
That would instantly make the Rangers a credible team in the AL next season, without having to rush the likes of Feliz, Holland, Main, and Poveda.

By the way, I realize I contradicted my own point by including "Blalock for Vasquez" in my wish list - that's based on the assumption that some GM will look past the injuries and consider Hank's age - and conclude that he'll be all better next year and ready to play 3rd again...

"Trade Salty to the A's for Street. "
Salty is worth more than Street.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 01, 2008 at 03:30 PM
If Salty is so good, wouldn't the Rangers want to keep him and trade Teagarden?
Posted by: tolo316 | November 01, 2008 at 05:39 PM
Salty is young, and still has time to develop but at this point I, personally, don't see anything overly special about him and he plays a position(s) that the A's are sittin ok at for a few years. He really hasn't done anything at the major league level, in a great hitters park, to be excited about.
