« Crasnick On Retirement Candidates | Main | Orioles Eyeing Burnett? »
11:09am: The deal is official, according to a Royals press release.
10:23am: SI.com's Jon Heyman confirms the deal.
10:02am: Red Sox exec Ben Cherington was on XM's MLB Home Plate radio station recently. He says "the report is premature."
9:43am: MLB.com's Jim Molony received a "no comment" from the Red Sox on McRae's report. Royals exec Mike Arbuckle said Crisp is still under Red Sox control, while Kansas City Star writer Joe Posnanski says there's something to the rumor.
8:48am: According to Brian McRae reporting for Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City, the Royals acquired Coco Crisp from the Red Sox for reliever Ramon Ramirez. I emailed McRae to confirm, and he said, "It's a done deal." The Royals get speed and a capable center fielder, while the Red Sox receive a quality late-game reliever.
Crisp, 29, hit .283/.344/.407 in 409 plate appearances this year. His center field defense saved 26 bases over the average last year, but was two below this year (he did battle groin, hamstring, knee, and foot issues). Crisp will earn $5.75MM in '09 and has an $8MM club option with a $500K buyout for '10.
The Red Sox trim payroll here, as Ramirez is not yet arbitration-eligible. He will not reach free agency until after the 2012 season, so the Red Sox impressively acquired four years of his services. The 27 year-old posted a 2.64 ERA in 71.2 innings this year while whiffing 70. The Royals might have to add a reliever to compensate for his absence, though they're now at their payroll limit. They're also a bit heavy on outfielders at this point.

I've always liked Coco's game back to when he was with the Indians. Glad to see him go to a place where he will get some PT. He's the kind of player that will never be "great" but might make the all-star team one day. He's a solid guy. I guess the Suxks were just comitted to Elsbury who I think can at minimum put up the same numbers as Coco with maybe not as much pop.

1. Drew can play 10 games in CF...thats not really an issue.
2. Flowers is like 6'5" and not good defensively. Also...has he ever played above A+ ball, unless you count the Arizona Fall league...
Hardly a guy you want to count on playin significant time this year.

I'm not too worried about the 4th outfielder. They have a ton of options: bring back Kotsay or Kapler, get Baldelli, bring up Bailey or Carter. Backup outfielders are the easiest commodity in baseball.
If they move Masterson to the rotation, they need to replace him in the pen. Ramirez will be a nice (and needed) upgrade over Timlin, but without Masterson, there's a gaping hole again. Maybe Smith would be ready to fill that hole. Maybe Lugo for Willis, and try to convert Willis to a setup guy. Whatever the case, someone has to fill that hole.

The bottom line on tek is his numbers do not warrant being a fulltime catcher. He would make a good mentor to an up and comer but it will be interesting the pricetag placed on that. He will sign with boston because no one else wants to pay big money to a catcher who barely got to the mendoza line against righties. How much the red sox choose to bid against themselves is all it comes down to. Will they or should they give him a little extra money out of respect is the question that will need to be answered? My gut tells me it will be a humbling offseason for tek. Hopefully that does not create problems heading into next year.

"Backup outfielders are the easiest commodity in baseball."
True but supplanting some of the versatility Crisp gave you with some RH pop would be nice. It's easy to fill that position but important the Sox do so with a good player...which of course seems obvious.
Basically I'm saying Baldelli > any of those other options.

I'm hoping Masterson stays in the pen, assuming Ramirez is kept it gives the Sox a very good bullpen and the Crisp trade frees up a little more cash to pursue Lowe/Burnett.

grandmasterb: "New Theo can concentrate on obtaining a starter for the hole vacated by Byrd (I'm pulling for Tazawa)"
Ain't gonna happen. Tazawa hasn't even pitched in the Japan major leagues yet. He's 22 years old. Think college draft. If the Sox get him at all, he will start no higher than Portland.

"I guess we have to move an OF now. What about Teahen for Rich Hill? Is that too much/too little? Hill has shown at times to be dominant".
Hopefully you're not in Dayton Moore's fav 5.
Rich Hill was torched for seven runs -- five earned -- in one-plus innings Tuesday for Aragua of the VWL.
Hill walked three and hit a batter. He went 5 1/3 innings without walking anyone in his first start in Venezuela, but he's issued 19 free passes in 14 innings since.
Posted by: MPM | November 19, 2008 at 01:49 PM
Yeah MPM, Hill sucks. He only struck out 183 batters in 2007 and had an ERA under 4. He's completely washed up. I bet he never pitches in the Big Leagues again. How many young Cubs arms have they screwed up now?

I'd rather the Royals move Teahen and probably someone else for either Fontenot/Marshall or Fontenot/Guzman.
Fontenot would fit perfectly as the new starting 2B and letting Callaspo take over the super utility role. And Marshall could be a LH #4 or #5 starter or Guzman could become the RH setup or long reliever.
Posted by: enhog30 | November 19, 2008 at 02:15 PM
I like that too, but would the Cubs give that up for Teahen? Seems like a lot for a consistently average player regardless of his ability to play multiple positions.
Posted by: Grover'sRoyals | November 19, 2008 at 02:16 PM
No, it would probably have to be more than Teahen. I don't how much value German has after last year, he's tearing it up in the Dominican league right now (382/489/539/1.029 line thru 21 games). But if Callaspo becomes the utility guy, German is expendable.
Posted by: enhog30 | November 19, 2008 at 02:24 PM
Yeah, I would be fine with letting German go. I wonder if there are any other suitors for Teahen (outside of our division)?
At this point I would like to see us get Furcal and some arms. The one thing Dayton Moore continues to show he can do is get bullpen arms.
Now that we have our CF, we need to get a 2B or SS. I think Aviles can play short, but he would improve the defense on the right side if he were moved to 2nd. Furcal just seems to make too much sense. I wonder if they are going to have a chance to get him?

RamRam pitched well for the Royals and I'm sorry to see him go.
However, don't assume this trade is all in Boston's favor. Take a look at Ramierez' 2007 season summary on MLB.com - it was an absolute catastrophe. The Royals picked him up for De La Rosa (lol) got a great season out of him, then sold him when his stock was highest.
Not a bad move imo...but both teams got some needed help.

"Furcal just seems to make too much sense."
He's also going to cost too much money.

This is a smart Royals fan. Guzman and Fontenot are two very under rated players IMHO. Guzman is throwing 97 in Venezuala right now...and has always had sick stuff. Injuries have hurt him...but he is back from Tommy John surgery and looking real good. Fontenot had a +900 OPS last year as a 2nd basemen in part time duty...enough said.
I will be mad at Hendry for giving either up unless its a really good player we are getting in return, but you are smart to target those players.

Definetly a good move for both teams. Coco wil flourish in Kansas and adding Ramirez will possibly free up Masterson to make the move back to the rotation. Leaving Ramirez, Okajima, and Delcarmen to set the table for Pap. Then the rotation would be Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Masterson, and Wakefield. And either Bucholz or Bowden as a fill in for injuries, with the other going to Texas for a catcher. Leaving the only two holes of Texiera, which became even easier to do with tihs payroll dump of Coco's contract, and a fourth outfielder. Kotsay would definetly be welcomed back but I think he moves on looking for a starting job somewhere. I think the more likely possibility is either Rocco Baldelli whom the sox have been reportedly talking to recently, or a familiar face and fan favorite..Gabe Kapler who is also a free agent. Either way look for the Sox to go after Tex hard, and then a catcher. The fourth outfielder is a seondary problem. No matter what happens, I think this trade made sense fo both sides and to Coco- A genuine thanks for everything brother and good luck to you I know given te chance in Kansas you will find your ull potential.

good trade for the Sox. I dont get this one for the royals. their bullpen has really decreased sice the lost Leo and Ramon. Ramon got a 4.50 ERA against the Yankees this year so I guess it aint that bad.
