« Towers: Peavy To Braves Could Still Happen | Main | Wakamatsu Is New Mariners' Manager »
Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press reports that the Tigers are interested in LHP Joe Beimel, according to Beimel's agent.
Biemel, 31, posted a 2.02 ERA for the Dodgers in 2008. He's only allowed one home run over the past two seasons, while pitching a combined 116.1 innings. However, he did give up 50 hits in 49 innings last year.
Morosi mentions that the Tigers are also in the hunt for a closer, making it clear that Beimel isn't the answer for the 9th inning in Detroit. Darren Oliver and Arthur Rhodes also appear on the Tigers' short list of interesting free agent relievers.

If the Tigers acquire Beimel will Tiger fans start debating who they would prefer to meet in the World Series like last year?

ESPN just said that Mike W. (A's bench coach) was named Seattle's coach.

Whitesa.as a tiger fan I would make that trade
Posted by: allstarlineup | November 18, 2008 at 06:16 PM
I would say the Phils would rather just sign a f/a OF rather than give up that load.

Oops, not Mike. His name is Don Wakamatsu.

I think the Tigers need two set-up man type relievers not an expensive closer. I am curious about Arthur Rhodes, and how good you think he is, and how much money it would require to sign him.

clearly, "whitesta" doesn't know anything about baseball.
Ordonez is not worth that much, and you must have some sort of mancruch on Nate Robertson... because he sucks. Maybe the glasses put him over the edge for you. The phillies would never do such a deal.
Madson is worth more than Ordonez alone.

Detroit doesn't necessarily need a "true" closer
Just look at what the TB Rays did without a "true" closer
However, to put confidence back into the bullpen, an experienced arm (who is a closer) would help stabalize a fast sinking ship

Although, Beimel is a great sign for the tigers. If.
Posted by: cben | November 18, 2008 at 06:41 PM
by the way
I was not implying Trevor Hoffman with my prior comment
I do not think he is the answer
But wouldn't complain if he made his way to Detroit
Posted by: pskip13 | November 18, 2008 at 06:42 PM
another by the way:
Magglio ain't going anywhere!
No one would want his contract
We wouldn't get much in return
And their r cheaper (if not better) alternatives for outfield: the market is huge right now
(Nothing against Mags)
...And I want him to stay in Detroit
Posted by: pskip13 | November 18, 2008 at 06:56 PM
I want Maggs to stay a Tiger too. I wouldn't complain about signing Hoffman either, but I'd be happier signing Beimel. Bobby Seay is horrible.

Uh....
Bobby Seay isn't horrible
He's just not that good either.....
(oddly enough jimmy leyland likes him)

You're entitled to your own opinion, but I think he is horrible.

Who cares

lets see: we a acquired a supposedly "all star SS" a former 22 game winner and one of the best young pure power hitters in the game. wouldn't you be excited? we already had a stacked lineup before Miggy came along
Posted by: allstarlineup | November 18, 2008 at 11:55 PM
Just don't get it - I know Beimel had the martini issue, slicing open his hand and missing a playoff series, but he's been awesome. Rumor has it that quality lefty relievers do not grow on trees - so this is McCourt cheaping out AGAIN. This, on the day that the Dodgers announce that they will be raising some Spring Training ticket prices by 450%, to twice that of any other team.
If you Tiger fans don't know who TroyFromWestVirginia is, he's a package deal with Beimel.

I'm here to defend Bobby Seay. While his ERA wasn't where it should be, 58 K in 56.1 IP is nothing to sneeze at for a left handed middle reliever.
