« Josh Byrnes - GM Trade History | Main | Gammons' Latest: Penny, Jenks, Salty »
MONDAY, 8:55am: Matthew Cerrone sorts through this mess at MetsBlog. Seems that K-Rod took a physical, but not for the Mets or any specific team. The whole thing is getting confusing, but it's safe to say he's not close to signing.
SUNDAY, 7:34pm: A variety of sources, including MLB.com, have quoted Rodriguez' agent Paul Kinzer directly as saying that the following rumor, posted earlier this evening, is inaccurate.
7:25pm: According to a report issued by Venezuelan newspaper El Universal, Francisco Rodriguez has visited doctors in New York City for a physical. The move may be interpreted by some as a step forward in ongoing negotiations between Rodriguez and one of his most interested suitors, the New York Mets.
Matthew Cerrone at MetsBlog mentions an instance last season where El Nuevo Dia had reported that the Mets had signed Livan Hernandez, when in fact they had not done so. Despite this, the story certainly qualifies, at the very least, as a rumor.

"Despite this, the story certainly qualifies, at the very least, as a trade rumor."
Poorly written due to the fact that it is not a trade rumor... its a signing rumor... Tim's the only one who cares and actually writes these articles with accuracy...

oh shove it. i'm sure alex is well aware that this isn't a trade scenario. however, it is "mlbtraderumors" relevant, is it not?
get over yourself.

Spot on, Fanatic. I've corrected the misstatement. Thanks for your comment.
Posted by: Alex Walsh | November 16, 2008 at 07:56 PM
Come on fanatic, don't hate on the guy. I think Alex was the guy Tim hired recently, so he is new. Give him a break. You're doing a great job digging up the rumors Alex, keep up it up!
On the actual rumor though, I don't really buy it. Latino newspapers commenting on the Latino players have never really been accurate.
Posted by: B3NG4L | November 16, 2008 at 08:01 PM
In the past these newspapers have probably been right about 50% of the time. For the Mets, I specifically remember a spanish newspaper breaking the Castillo and Alou signings, but one was wrong on Livan.

I was not being arrogant... i just like knit picking on the newbies... i am sorry if my comment was at all offensive i honestly meant for it to be a joke... anyway nice job digging up this rumor Alex...

I think everyone missed the sarcasm baseball, but good for you to point it out now.
Posted by: B3NG4L | November 16, 2008 at 08:09 PM
As a Mets fan I hope this rumor is false. The last thing the Mets need is another high priced overrated closer.
Posted by: Perpetual Memory Loss | November 16, 2008 at 08:09 PM
I agree with the overrated part of that statement, PML, but I'm almost certain the Mets will pay more for their closer than most others team, considering their market. A three-year deal for a big name, overrated or not, seems a near certainty.
Posted by: Alex Walsh | November 16, 2008 at 08:16 PM
The article says that the Mets made the highest offer, but it was still less than what K-rod wanted.
It wouldn't surprise me if this offer was for something like 3/30.
Posted by: supermets | November 16, 2008 at 08:25 PM
No way it's 3/30. The Angels offer(s) have been significantly more than that.
Posted by: bjsguess | November 16, 2008 at 08:39 PM
My guess is this rumor is false. If it's true, it's probably 4/$52.
Posted by: sampsonite168 | November 16, 2008 at 08:47 PM
What do they owe Billy Wagner for this next year? 10 million?
Posted by: jlowrance | November 16, 2008 at 08:54 PM
"No way it's 3/30. The Angels offer(s) have been significantly more than that."
Offers can be pulled and the Angels previous offer may have been also. though I doubt seriously that K-Rod would slip to 3/30. but 4/52 as posted further down here wouldn't be surprising.
Mets may be better off now working towards Kerry Wood/Jeremy Affeldt duo now rather than K-Rod.
Posted by: johns | November 16, 2008 at 09:03 PM
K-rod
Street
Affeldt
Cordero
Getting those 4 will significantly improve the bullpen.

NY POST says "untrue"
"...not true at all, according to multiple people on both sides of the situation. "It's total BS," said K-Rod's weary agent, Paul Kinzer"

NY POST says untrue

"id love to know how krod is overrated...for sumone who is in his prime...just set the single-season record for saves with 62"
I think overrated fits if he thinks he should get 15M a year. As for the 62 saves... frankly I put that in the same pile as say a pitcher winning 25 or more games. Under the exact same circumstances, most of the op closers would be able to pull it off. Now I'm not saying K-Rod isn't a great closer but frankly he isn't in my top 5 in baseball today. Top 5 being Mariano (yes, he's still the king, his numbers last year were INSANE), Soria, Papelbon, Nathan, Lidge.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | November 16, 2008 at 09:31 PM
The media reports (Assuming they have any credibility) have had the Mets reluctant to go over 3 years for any relief pitcher, my guess is their initial offer could be just 3 years, but at a high annual value to compensate, something like 3/40-45 with an Option.

HiHaters6-
Pitcher A: 64 G, 70.2 IP, 41 H, 6 BB, 77 K, 1.40 ERA, 0.665 WHIP, .165/.190/.233
Pitcher B: 76 G, 68.1 IP, 54 H, 34 BB, 77 K, 2.24 ERA, 1.288 WHIP, .216/.314/.316
Who would you rather have Pitcher A or Pitcher B?
http://riveraveblues.com/2008/11/14/a-tale-of-two-pitchers-5885/
Pitcher A is Mariano Rivera.
Pitcher B is Francisco Rodriguez.
No one thinks that Mo is worth 15 million a year and his numbers are far superior then K-Rod. So, how is K-Rod worth it when there are other "cheaper" alternatives.
Posted by: Thirty5Thirty6 | November 16, 2008 at 09:40 PM
Soria beats out KRod in BB/9, k/BB, H/9, Opponent BA, and WHIP. All stats I find far more attractive when looking for a closer. Oh and he also beat KRod in save percentage. So yeah. Right now, I like Soria over KRod. Add in KRod's price tag and I'll add that Soria is far more valuable.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | November 16, 2008 at 09:51 PM
3 is greater than 7? What math is this?
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | November 16, 2008 at 09:58 PM
Wow I can't believe the rumor is false never saw that coming utter disbelief, etc....
Posted by: sampsonite168 | November 16, 2008 at 09:59 PM
anybody would be better than wut the mets got in their bullpen now...
Posted by: ... | November 16, 2008 at 10:30 PM
Boy, if Philly's commentators wanted to pitch at Jose Reyes' neck for pointing, imagine what theyll say when Krod converts a save and does his whole routine.

"who comes to impose a record for Major League, with 62 rescues that conquered during the regular harvest."
I love translating software.

"did u just put soria ahead of krod...are u kidding me...u gotta be nuts...the other closers yess i agree but soria is better then krod wow"
Soria is one of the best closers in baseball, where have you been the last two years?
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 17, 2008 at 08:19 AM
Soria is a great closer. K-Rod is a great closer. The deal breaker for the Mets regarding the Top 5 closers in the game and K-Rod, is that K-Rod is available.
Mo isn't a free agent, nor are Soria, Nathan, Lidge, etc. The fact is that none of those teams are trading those guys to the Mets without getting someone like F-Mart in return. And that's not goign to happen because Omar isn't giving him up, he wouldn't even do it for Johan! So you make the best of the situation and sign K-Rod (3 year with 4th year option) or Wood (2 year deal).
