Latest On Raul Ibanez

According to Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune, the Cubs, Mets, and Phillies talked to Raul Ibanez's agent this week.  Those three clubs remain high on him.  LaRue says the Mariners fielded a call from Ibanez's agent, but he's unlikely to sign because he wants to win and does not want to be a designated hitter.

Another reason to let Ibanez leave is his Type A status.  He's highly unlikely to accept an offer of arbitration, and the Mets, Phillies, and Cubs all have unprotected first-round picks.

Why are NL clubs talking to Raul Ibanez? He shouldn't be in the field.

Although Alfonso Soriano and Raul Ibanez in the same OF would be fun to watch, especially if you're a Cardinals/Brewers/Pirates/Reds/Astros fan.

Melonis Rex I think you missed this part.......

he wants to win and DOES NOT WANT TO BE A DESIGNATED HITTER.

raul ibanez: lefty hitter, clutch, focussed, hard-working veteran
sounds like perfect solution for cubs.
except he can't play right field. that's the biggest reason why the soriano contract will screw them: no flexibility in their lineup. (unless they want to move him back to second!)

"Melonis Rex I think you missed this part.......

So this means an NL team must give him what he wants? Frankly, I want to get paid a billion dollars to not do anything, but for some reason I just am not fielding many offers for this particular skill set.

Teams sign FAs to help their teams, and a goal should be/is to maximize the value of the money spent. Raul Ibanez is a damn fine player offensively. However, he gives back a nice chunk of the runs he produces through his defense. Him giving back those runs hurts the team, and means that the team isn't getting the full value of their production.

Ultimately, I think that Raul will sign with an NL team, simply because more NL teams need OF, and defense is really undervalued in the market, while offensive production, in turn, is overvalued. But that doesnt make it a smart move.

Look, the Cubs need a lefy to break up their predominantly righty hitting lineup. And of the choices they have, Teahen, Dunn, Abreu, Ibanez, et al, few if any of them play good defense. Chances are they will be left with having to pick hitting over defense.

rememberthecoop: "Look, the Cubs need a lefy to break up their predominantly righty hitting lineup."

By this, I take it that you mean that the Cubs need someone who can kill RH pitchers.

Though a LH hitter, Ibanez actually fares worse hitting against RHPs than against LHPs.

Cubs would do better to look elsewhere for their "lefty".

Crash.... If you ever saw Soriano play second base, you would want to keep him in the outfield. The Cubs should start Fontenot at second base and put Derosa in right field. Fontenot is that left hand bat Piniela is looking for. He also has a good glove. I think the Cubs are a better team with Fontenot at second base than they are with Derosa at second base. Fukudome could start in center. Reed Johnson and felx pie can play off the bench. The Cubs need to concentrate on getting Peavy and some bullpen help. After that task is complete, they can see where they stand with position players.

Random: "Ibanez actually fares worse against RHP's than LHP's". over the last 3 years Ibanez has hit .300 against RHP's and .269 against LHP's.....so i dont know where u got that from.

Defense won't be much of a problem for the Cubs in RF. They have a very good defensive replacement in Fukedome. With that said, I'd rather see Abreu in RF than Ibanez.

Why would the Phillies look at Ibanez, another LH hitter? We already are overloaded with Utley, Howard, Jenkins and Stairs.. with Burrell moving on (my guess), we need a power RH bat, not another lefty...
