« Coco Crisp Traded To Royals | Main | Mets, Phillies, Dodgers Interested In Ibanez »
Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun talked to Orioles president Andy MacPhail, who said he's had one conversation with A.J. Burnett's agent (Darek Braunecker) since the free agent period opened. It's not known whether the Orioles made an offer.
Burnett may not have anything on the table yet - Ken Rosenthal shot down the report of Toronto making a four-year, $54MM proposal. Burnett will apparently be pursued by all AL East teams aside from the Rays. ESPN's Buster Olney believes a guaranteed fifth year may land Burnett.

I like Burnett and all, but will 5 years of him have any noticeable impact on the O's?

O's in '13: why wouldn't it, I realize your name implies you don't think the O's will contend in the next 5 years but I think you are selling them short. If Burnett can stay healthy (which yes is a big if) it would be a great deal. By 2010 2 of Matsuz, Tillman, and Arrieta should be joining the rotation if not all 3. Add them to a Guthrie, Burnett rotation and the outlook seems pretty good. Not to mention the O's have a pretty decent group of posistion players in Markakis, Wieters, Jones, Roberts (if they resign him) plus guys like Luke Scott, Riemold and maybe even Brandon Snyder. Its not hard to imagine the O's adding a couple big names to that group and being in contention by 2011. Also Burnett would partially pay for himself on a team like the O's. His signing would increase season ticket and Merch. sales and would energize the fan base.

Still rather see Teixeira in an O's uniform. If MacPhail can sign Burnett and Teixeira I'd say he did a great job. Otherwise I'm going to be very disappointed.

Here's a terrific question for Orioles management. Why aren't you rebuilding? Stop signing free agents and get some solid young players without arm injuries. Build your core around Wieters, Jones, and Markakis and stop signing high priced guys.

Talented young pitchers don't grow on trees, and they'd probably have to give up young talent to acquire them, so it makes more sense to sign a free agent.

It's definitely a risk, but with the orioles so desperate for pitching, it's on they should seriously consider taking

I would rather see the O's sign Tex over AJ. Yes, the Orioles are desperate for pitching, but his risk is too high for me. If he stayed healthy it would be great but I just can't see it happening.

I like the Os but lets get real. They should use that money for draft picks or a couple of quality pitchers. One pitcher aint going to make a huge difference.
