« Marlins, Pavano Have Mutual Interest | Main | Angels Moving On Without K-Rod »
5:34pm: Mandel talked to a team source who says the Phillies were never close to a deal for Matt Holliday. Talks at the GM meetings were brief.
3:25pm: According to MLB.com's Ken Mandel, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is now focused on re-signing lefty starter Jamie Moyer. Mandel gives a 50-50 chance Moyer signs before Friday. Moyer turns 46 soon, but he's not showing any signs of slowing down. He wants a multiyear deal after earning $7MM this season.
Mandel adds that the Phillies have expressed interest in re-signing Pat Burrell, but he'll likely have a chance to test the open market.

give him what he's earned. That dive in game 3 of the WS on that crappy call is worth at least 15 million for 2 years. Also i want him around long enough to teach Carrasco his work ethic (not that Carlos has a bad one, but everyone says that having Moyer around has helped the entire staff). Get it done Ruben.

1 year with a mutual option?
He's earned a raise as well

Jamie doesn't seem likely to slow down. His stuff isn't going to get worse, I am sure even at 52 he could still throw a ball 80 mph if he stays in shape. He can almost literally pitch as long as he wants. And the Mets can't freaking touch this guy and it drives me insane. No brainer to bring him back. The Phils should be careful because although Jamie seems loyal and like he wants to continue as a Philly, if you don't lock him up before FA starts, you run the risk of some idiot GM offering him a 3/30 type of deal, which would be hard for him to walk away from, but also very hard for the Phils to match.

Offer Moyer a 1 year contract with recurring options, like what the Red Sox got with Tim Wakefield
Posted by: JT89 | November 12, 2008 at 07:15 PM
The Phillies shouldn't sign him for more than two years. Give him a raise: 2/15-16? They'll get at least a 4th-5th starter out of him and an extra coach. I'd pass on more than 2 years though, and just pick up the draft picks if he gets a deal elsewhere.

I would give Moyer the Tim Wakefield treatment. Perpetual mutual option which both sides have to consent on(although for more money than Wake's 4MM).

2 year deal then a option for 3rd (I'd go for Mutua; & see what he says to that). Maybe $8-9 Mill. would be good enough for him to get it done.

If Omar is wanting a LF he better go and offer a better deal for Burrell than the Phillies. I can see that a perfect fit for the Mets and a motivation factor playing against them

I hear the Phils are interested in doing a trade for Garrett Atkins and moving him to LF...Atkins would a better trade then Holliday because he won't cost us Shane Victorino and Carlos Carrasco...Come on Ruben you can pull this trade off.

could atkins really play left field? I know it'd make his buddy Utley happy so maybe he'd stop cursing during WS celebrations.
Oh and Moyer won't go anywhere but Philly or Seattle and seattle doesn't need to go "old" at this point. There's no way anyone offers him 3/30 or more. He'll stay with 2/15.

Moyer would accept a 1 year deal with an option / buy out, I am sure. Or he may just accept arbitration.
Doubt we will ever collect draft picks for him. What team would give up 2 picks and then give moyer a multi-year deal?
His best option is with Philly and we need him. Ruben will get it done.

I'd love to see Garrett Atkins out there in left field for comedic purposes. He's enough of a butcher at third - I could imagine him trying to patrol an outfield grass.
I know Pedro Feliz had that big hit in the World Series, but is he that irreplaceable that they wouldn't be able to just stick Atkins at third if they get him?

I don't know that I see moving Atkins to the OF. He's not lethargic or anything but he's not especially fast. I know speed is more crucial at Center but, as much I like Atkins (seriously he has his downs, like anyone but he is overall steady and consistent, that is valuable) wouldn't teams want someone a little faster than him in left?

Atkins home/road splits are horrendous from what I have heard. The Phillies should look at Ibanez first, because he is just as good of an option but is a FA so he wouldn't cost us anything
