« Heilman Wants Starting Job Or Trade | Main | Mike Mussina Retires »
According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Red Sox signed first baseman/left fielder Paul McAnulty to a minor league deal. McAnulty, 28 in January, has a career .208/.324/.330 line in 212 big league at-bats. He's posted some nice Triple A numbers though.

Ramon Ramirez and Paul McAnulty! Should complete the offseason shopping list.

Woo Hoo!! F**k CC and Tex, we got Ramon and McAnulty! BOS is a lock for 100 wins in 2009!!

I don't see how that takes them out of the Tex sweepstakes. They would consider McAnulty back-up 1B/OF, wouldn't they?

WOW.. What a god awful use of resources. How could they possibly spend that money on him when they could've made their offer to Tex be 8/150.4 rather than 8/150?!?

In an attempt to consider that sometimes small moves are the precursor to larger moves.
1. McAnulty was signed to a minor league deal not a major league deal. He plays OF/1B
2. Chris Carter already fills this position at the minor league level for the Red Sox
Conclusion: This signing provides the Red Sox with organizational depth in the event they package Chris Carter as part of trade; or...
it allows them to consider Carter for a bench spot on the team to fill the role Sean Casey did; as both are similar players with solid batting AVG ability.
Lastly, The Sox best prospect at 1B (Lars Anderson) is likely to play most of the year in AA next season, so the Sox needed someone for 1B at the AAA level.
Basically, this move is an indicator that Chris Carter is likely projected to be someplace other then Pawtucket when next season starts.

Wow Mowses I hope you are kidding...
And Kangaroo, you are looking too deep into this. I have seen Mac dominate at the minor league levels since A ball and just suck it up (especially defensive wise) at the major league level for a while now. I have never seen him play 1st, so I would mainly pencil him in as an OF. And if he isn't good enough to be a padres BACKUP OFer, what does that make him? He is just being give another shot. Which he will fail at like always.

Kangaroo, yes and no. Jeff Bailey also took up some 1B/OF/DH ABs along with Carter and Bailey is projected to be Casey's replacement this year (Though he'll probably battle it out with Carter during ST). So it's more likely McAnulty isn't a precursor, rather a good old fashion minor league depth move.

LOL @ the comments so far.
Maybe this guy will share time in the majors and minors and be a Jeff Bailey sorta guy? Perhaps Red Sox anticipate him being a back up 1st baseman if Youkilis/Texiera had the day off? Probably wishful thinking on my part :)
