4:54pm: More Rockies chatter from Troy Renck. The Rockies intend to sort out the Holliday/Atkins trade situations before moving on to other concerns such as the bullpen. They do like the idea of bringing Jeremy Affeldt back, though. Renck has the Twins and Indians kicking the tires on Atkins, while Tracy Ringolsby believes Michael Cuddyer could be a fit for Colorado.

A's?
No. Just no.
First of all, the young pitching, although a strength, is a wildcard. The A's could easily not have a true frontline starter emerge until 2010. If that pitching doesn't click, then the A's aren't contending, regardless of the bats.
One bat won't immediately turn the A's into contenders. The A's need to figure out how Travis Buck, Ryan Sweeney, Carlos Gonzalez, and Aaron Cunningham fit into their long term plans, and giving them each regular playing time is the best way to do it.
And, the A's aren't going to give out a 100++MM contract to anyone, let alone a corner outfielder.

This is really becoming a three ring circus for Rockies fans. I hope we start seeing legit names being mentioned for guys coming the Rox way in all these speculations.

I think the media is really pushing the "Atkins subpar defense" bs a little too much. No, he isn't a GG type defender, but he has improved considerably, and had defensive numbers a 3rd base last year that were actually pretty good. He would have come out a little above average if he had played a full season there. The problem is nobody watched him at all, so nobody seems to know this.

I agree. Atkins is far from a hack at 3rd base like say, Ryan Braun was. I wouldn't mind to see him be moved because Stewart is a stud. but Atkins is a very good player that like almost every Rockies player had a subpar year.

Huh the A's?They usually trade hitters in their prime for prospects instead of trade prospects for hitters in their prime,i just don't see that happening...The Phils have had interest in Holliday, but it's gonna take alot to get him and you don't know if they'll even be able to sign him...The Angels have had interest in Holliday i can see them making a trade for him.

Well there's a lot more to it then the A's usually trade players in their prime for prospects instead of trading prospects for players in their prime. The A's act on neccessity. They are a small market team that has to keep their head above water anyway possible. Fortunately they have an excellent GM who has put this team in a nice position going into next season. They are loaded with young talent, have a surplus of young pitching, and are working with the lowest payroll in years. If the A's deal Street, and Crosby along with part of his salary they will be sitting, as-is, under $40 million. Street is almost a sure thing, and I think Detroit or another team will go for Crosby as a one year stop-gap. Obviously the A's will be eating most of his salary, but between Street and Crosby it should cancel out Ellis' contract leaving them around 37 million. They have worked in the past at $80 million, and this might be a good offseason to make a big splash or two. That said, I don't think that splash will be Holliday unless the A's think they can extend him.

Two thoughts on the comments:
1- Johan Santana went to the Mets so RSD should get over it.
2- What constitutes a dynsaty, anyways?
Posted by: SpineyNorman | November 06, 2008 at 01:43 PM
jpshark is right, to an extent.
The A's have traded prospects for established players before, think Jason Kendall, or Jose Guillen back in 2003, or even Milton Bradley.
Payroll is around 30-35MM, so a big splash can happen.
Holliday would be a rental, so cross that off the list. I'd like to see Magglio Ordonez come to the A's. A's have what the Tigers need, which is pitching.
Maybe a little pitching swapped for the hitting wonder that is Magglio Ordonez? How much pitching goes to Detroit depends on how much salary is eaten, if any.
I would start negotiations off with Smith + one of Street/Mazarro, with 5MM of salary eaten.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 06, 2008 at 02:58 PM
Actually, scratch that.
Smith and Street/Mazarro would be with no salary eaten. Hmm, I don't know.
Imput?

I'd be extremely surprised, shocked even, if KW settles for Taveras. He's like a more expensive, less impressive Jerry Owens. Don't read too much into this.

Im not a huge fan of Atkins, but a straight up trade for Cuddy would work for me so long at the Rockies take his whole salary
Posted by: Den_Orath | November 06, 2008 at 06:50 PM
I'm not sure if that would just Cuddyer would be enough to get Atkins, Twins might have to add in Perkins or Humber
Posted by: NJ19 | November 06, 2008 at 06:55 PM
I can say absolutely no on perkins. Maybe on Humber but i doubt it. Atkins home/road splits and questionable defense dont warrant it.
Posted by: Den_Orath | November 06, 2008 at 07:23 PM
there's no way the twins get atkins just for cuddyer. what is cuddyer's trade value right now? he has a 2 year, 16 million dollar contract which isn't bad by outfielder standards. but he's coming off of a bad offensive year in 07 and an injured season in 08. i think it would cost at least perkins/blackburn, plus 2 other prospects. if they really want cuddyer, and i don't believe for a second they do, they would still need to give up at least blackburn/perkins and another prospect.
either way, i think atkins would be an upgrade over anything the twins have and what's on the free agent market, and would also be wiser than 1 year of beltre.

Maybe if you remove Jimenez. Why would the Rockies even think about trading him.
Also, let's not forget that Vasquez has a NTC to the NL and AL west.
Posted by: mkorpal | November 06, 2008 at 09:44 PM
I definitely agree that Atkins is terrible away from Coors, which is why teams are reluctant to give up a lot for himl There's no way the Twins would give up Cuddyer+Perkins+a couple of prospects for a guy who hit .230 on the road last year
Posted by: NJ19 | November 06, 2008 at 09:45 PM
The trade I'm thinking of is Slowey for Atkins, strait up. No prospects required.

Posted by: mkorpal | November 06, 2008 at 09:49 PM
absolutely not. Slowey is a legit 3 starter with 2 potential under control for several years. Why is Gods name would we give him up for a mediocre 3B under control for 2 years? We have 3b prospects coming up and Buscher can provide close enough numbers to Atkins. Liriano Baker and Slowey will not be moved unless some team decides to get stupid. Blackburn and Perkings or a minor leaguer are the options.

"The trade I'm thinking of is Slowey for Atkins, strait up. No prospects required."
No.
Slowey is worth more than Atkins AND is under team control for longer than Atkins.

i still would rather see the twins go after a better 3rd baseman than Atkins like the seattle 3rd baseman, who is a GG 3rd baseman with power, average 3rd basemens don't fair well on the dome floor very often so why would that be different?
slowly isnt going anywhere, he is the twins next Radke, hits his spots and wont over power you... i like the kid he will be a good for years to come.
if you wanna trade a starter out right take blackburn or perkins than ill make the trade other than that not going to happen with any of our other 3 main starters

The Rockies have Ian Stewart coming into his own at 3B, Todd Helton at 1B and no DH. The Rockies need a young, projectable, mlb ready # 3/ # 4 Starting Pitcher, preferably a lefty and a superior defensive CF'er to roam around in the vast, wide open spaces of Coors Field...
The Cleveland Indians are in desperate need of a decent 3B and have four mlb ready or near ready LHSP's (Jeremy Sowers, Aaron Laffey, Scott Lewis and David Huff) along with Fielding Bible winner, Franklyn Gutierrez to complete a "good for both teams" trade..
What say you?
