« Schulman On The Giants | Main | Crisp Almost A Red, Says Jocketty »
Joel Zumaya might be ready to pitch this spring--and he might not be, reports Jason Beck of MLB.com. Tigers assistant GM Al Avila calls it "basically a week-to-week, month-to-month situation." That's enough to force the Tigers to come up with a backup plan for their relief corps.
Adding Trevor Hoffman as closer may be at the center of that plan. Brandon Lyon is another option for the ninth, says Beck. Zach Miner is mentioned as an in-house option for the bullpen, but likely wouldn't close. He may need to move to the rotation, pending an update on the futures of Kenny Rogers and Freddy Garcia.
While the bullpen is the focus for the Tigers this offseason, upgrades are also needed at shortstop and catcher, following the departure of 2008 Opening Day starters Edgar Renteria and Ivan Rodriguez.

I could see Lyon succeeding in Detroit.

Zach Miner should be in the rotation.
Over Nate Robertson and Dontrelle Willis.

The Tigers are in trouble if Zach is in the rotation. He very limited success last year, then collapsed (6.67 ERA in last 5 starts).

The Tigers had 28 blown saves last season. Only the Mets, Cards, and Mariners had more blown saves. The Tigers 54.8% save percentage was the 3rd worst in baseball.
Hoffman would be a great signing for more than one reason.
Hoffman successfully closed out 88.2% of his save opportunities. 2nd best save percentage in the NL. With 62 save opportunities that would equal 54 saves. No I don't think Hoffman would get 54 saves, but certainly his total would be better than the 34 the Tigers got in 2008.
Hoffman would also be a great example for the young guys in the Tigers bullpen.
His work ethic and the way he goes about his job on the mound would go along way towards getting the young relievers like Zumaya ready to go each day.
And 2 years and $8-10 million is a cheap price to pay for 30+++++ saves and a 88% save percentage.

Kenny Rogers is more than likely to retire and I hope that we resign Freddy Garcia. However, without them, our rotation looks like
Verlander
Galarraga
Bonderman (if healthy)
Miner
FA signing
then Robertson if necessary
then Lambert/Bonine
then the bat boy
then Dontrelle.

Hoffman would really help out. If Detroit fails to resign Garcia and has to rely on Bonine or Lambert, it will be a long year.
I really hope Detroit signs Garcia.

Ideally, Hoffman COULD help out our team. At the same time though, he could struggle in the AL and not be effective and be like most of our bullpen guys.
Sign a lefty (Beimel/Rhodes)
Sign Cruz/Lyon
Bullpen:
Dolsi
Rodney
Zumaya
A. Lopez
Seay
Beimel/Rhodes
Lyon/Cruz

I love DD but he really dropped the ball this year. Pudge for Farnsworth? honestly, why? since DD already knew he had no plans for pudge after this year, wouldn't it make more sense to keep him and offer him a option that everyone knows he would decline, then we get a draft pick. Rent, man was that a terrible trade. I really hope DD has learned his lesson. in 1 year he turned the tigers from a contender to a joke. and i thought only millen could do something like that. DD has his work cut out for him. Lets hope he is a good GM like we all hope he his

Please move Robertson to the pen, no more starts for Nate. Hoffman or Lyon would be a good aquisition.

Looking objectively at this team ... I don't have good feeling about this year
The pen is an absolute joke - Rodney has turned into a mental midget that can not handle any pressure situation - I refuse to hold onto any hope that Zumaya will ever be close to '06 - a 41 year old Hoffman who is way past his prime is not a solution
Seay, Dolsi, Lopez are decent options in the middle
I would definately prefer Cruz over Hoffman
IF Verlander bounces back, and IF Galarraga can repeat last year and IF Bondo is healthy there are still too many questions with the starters - Dontrelle? Nate? Garcia? This collection of pitchers does not breed confidence
Let's not even start on the offence
Catcher? Shortstop?
2 glaring holes on this team.
I definately can see another sub .500 year for this team!
Hopefully we can stave off the Royals for last in the Central!!

i second that i hope garcia signs with detroit.
Tigers need to start signing some pieces before they're all gone...i say go get Cruz, Hoffman, Lyon and Biemel for the bullpen...Garcia for the rotation.
As for shortstop and catcher go, i think we would be ok with our internal options of dusty ryan and ramon santiago. im a fan of getting Mcdonald from toronto and signing Varitek.
they also need to trade Thames to Cincinatti for a reliever or some prospects. David Weathers for Thames?
when all is said and done in 2009, i will be surprised if my tigers win 70 games...at least Leyland would be gone.

Joel Zumaya is a joke. Why do they still depend on the guy? He's made of glass.
