Braves Sign Dave Ross

FRIDAY: The two-year deal with Ross is official, and it's believed to be for $3MM.

WEDNESDAY, 8:00pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman says Ross' two-year deal will be worth about $3.5MM.  Ross says it could be finalized tomorrow.

5:01pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Braves are close to a two-year deal with free agent catcher Dave Ross.  He'd serve as Brian McCann's backup.  Ross, 32 in March, posted a strong .381 OBP with the Reds this year.  The Astros were also known to be interested, but I imagine Ross jumped when the Braves offered two years.

Ha, I was just about to email this to you. I think it's a good solid signing. Some of their pieces are slowly falling into place.

I don't know what's falling into place, they signed a mediocre pitcher and a backup catcher.

Having Dave Ross around will let Corky Miller and Clint Sammons mature more, but the Braves will eventually trade them like they did Salty, and Flowers..Overall good deal I suppose

Did they need a SP? Yes. A backup cathcer? Yes. They don't have the money to get the best players but they're getting some players. They still need some other ones but they're filling up some holes.

"Having Dave Ross around will let Corky Miller and Clint Sammons mature more"

Corky Miller mature more???????

Land-Man:

Dude, the big signings or trades won't happen until next week! I guess they want to get the smaller stuff(Vazquez isn't that small, but) out of their way first...does that not make ant sense to you?

Corky Miller is 33 years old. I don't think he's "maturing" any time soon. Brilliant comment.

I'm happy about this, but only because I don't want the Astros to sign Ross.

I really like this move for the Braves. Ross gives us a solid bat with good power (.233/.319/.463 24 HR in 449 PA) against LHP when McCann needs a day off.

Braves fans should not be disappointed with this guy. I wasn't when Boston got him when Cincy releseed him late in '08 and if Dave Cash wasn't Wakefield's personal catcher, have a feeling Ross would have been back as the reserve for '09. He's a pretty good glove/arm man with some decent pop, just got to get him some more AB's than Boston was able to, since he only got the call when Boston had him, 'Tek, Cash and the rookie Kotteras on the late season roster and he was just out of synce with his wings, but he looked very good behind the plate still in the few innings he was out there.

I don't think a guy with close to 2500 career K's is mediocre. I rather have him than Reyes, James, or Morton.

I wouldn't be surprised too to see Ross play a little 1st until Krotchman finally grows a pair and becomes the hitter he was hyped up to be.

Ross has never played 1st in the Majors.

Very solid signing. Surprised no one signed him who needed a starter like Houston.

Not complaining, just saying that the Braves have a looong way to go before being competitive next year. I still want Burnett And Randy Johnson.

ATL fans: This guy is a solid backup, he can't possibly be worse than Miller. And his OBP is downright respectable.

This shows how ignorant the Reds Front Office is.

Last year, David Ross had better Offensive stats than Paul Bako and was at least as good, if not better than, him on Defense.

What did the Reds do? They released Ross, ate his salary, brought up Ryan Hanigan from the Minors and then proceeded to play Bako WAAAAAYYYY more than he should have been played, just because he was one of Dusty Baker's Boys.

Then, they let Bako become a Free agent.

Now, the Reds only have Hanigan on the roster at the Catcher's position and they don't know whether he is a starter or a back up and are rumored to be looking for another Catcher.

Some of the rumors being Homer Bailey to the Rangers for Gerald Laird or Bronson Arroyo to the Rangers for one of their other Catchers.

So, instead of keeping Ross and resigning him, they are stupidly looking to overpay for an overhyped Catcher in a market where a LOT of teams are looking to get a Catcher.

Randy Johnson? Because the Braves really need another 40 something year old pitcher?...ok.

I like this signing for the Braves. Ross can give them some nice pop off the bench and a solid backup.

Miller was terrible period this guy laid a .083 batting average for gods sakes. Ross hits for more power and more consistency. You would think now that sammons is now a trade candidate.

Trade Simmons for what? A sucky low A prospect?

Correcting myself. Sammons***

No sammons is potentially a good catcher in the majors. There are several teams in need of catching. Tigers, Red sox, Astros, and the marlins are always down for a trade. I am pretty sure we could get some good prospect for him.

There is no way the Braves would get a good prospect for Clint Sammons.
Signing Ross is good for the Braves. Trading for Javier Vazquez is not. Having watched alot of White Sox games I know he sucks.

Where is the love for Vazquez the guy hasn't even put on a Braves uniform and we are already calling this a failure. A change of scenery can produce trash into all star talent. Brad lidge for example. CC going to the Brewers was the best for him he found another gear with a change. Just give him a chance I am sure he will not let us down. I mean he is not any worse then Hampton sitting on the bench soaking up money.

Bravesfansince1990,

Lidge is different. He was "mentally spent" in Houston, but his talent was there. He needed a change of scenery. I remember saying "oh crap" when they got him because the first blown save he'd be toast by our fans. I think when he blows one next year at some point, we'll be OK with that now. Vazquez's stats and that he's a flyball pitcher just spells DOOM in CBP at the very least. At best he's an overpaid 3 that you could have gotten better for and you gave up a possible stud catching prospect for him.

Is he better than Reyes, Morton, yes, but that's not saying much.

Phils dude:

Lay off Morton and Reyes, especially Morton! They are still young and learning. Reyes doesn't look like he'll ever be that much, but who knows. Morton has good movement on all of his pitches but he has work to do on his control on the mound and in his head...he is 25 or 26, but he's probably a late blossomer(is that even a word?)

I am with you on this for 2 reasons: 1st and foremost is the heck away from Ozzie Guillen and his nagging and negativity towards him, since really believe he needs a sort of 'babying" if that is the correct word.

2nd is out of the AL and where 1 less offensive minded player (DH) to face which might also help his mindset some. With the outstanding stuff he has, I would not be surprised to see him win 15+ games next year, even if the Braves fail to win 85.

Brian,

I think you meant late bloomer. Ok, I'll lay off, but I actually said something complimentary about a braves acquisition, so that's a step in the right direction, right? Right nixa37?

I still think Vazquez is a waste of money and a mistake and if Flowers ends up a 25HR 90-100RBI guy in a couple years you'll be regretting that deal.

If Flowers turns into a 25 HR guy what is Atlanta really missing? We already have a better hitting catcher now and a better hitting 1B prospect to. Face facts he was trade bait from the time he started hitting in the AFL and really had no chance of ever playing for Atlanta. Where would you play him?

Crown royal 34,

Flowers won't end up as a catcher, IMO. He's wayyy too big to fit behind the plate. Baseball prospectus said that in the history of baseball there has NEVER been a catcher that's been that size, something like 6'4, 250. I'd expect the Sox to move him to say 1B at some point???

Also if he develops into that by the time he reaches AAA you could then sell him off for a lot more if better options are available. To me its very possible that Flowers has just scratched the surface of what he can do and Kenny WIlliams is known for buying low and ending up with gold. Unfortunately I know, gavin floyd.

Flowers was a luxury Atlanta could afford to move with power hitting prospects Heyward(OF) and Freeman(1B) still in the minors. You have to give something to get something and lets not forget Flowers is at most the braves 5th or 6th best prospect behind Heyward, Hanson, Freeman, Schafer, Tehran, and Hernandez. All of these prospect have more upside so to me moving a guy like Flowers and a few no names that dont matter for a solid ML workhorse starter

I think Vasquez has some upside for the braves. Being in the NL will help lower his ERA, and the Braves has a history of getting the most from some guys like this. Besides, I liken this to the Joe Blanton deal the phils made last year. We might have given up a little more, but at least we have a solid innings eater that can win 15 games or so and take the load off the bullpen. As long as this isn't the "ace" Wren ends up with, this could be a great move.

This guy would have been a perfect backup to Russell Martin, but I guess the Dodgers want to go cheap and stick with Ardoin.

"As long as this isn't the "ace" Wren ends up with"

Honestly, I think Wren already has his "ace" with Jair. Unless he can get Lowe or Peavy, I think the Braves are better served with picking up another guy similar to Vazquez. Or perhaps a Chan Ho Park, if the Dodgers don't want to give him a full time #5 gig.

"I don't know what's falling into place, they signed a mediocre pitcher and a backup catcher."

What mediocre pitcher are you referring to? I don't recall them signing any.

Great sign for the braves. I hated having Corky play because he was just like having another pitcher bat. Sign Burnett and all we need is that outfield bat.

I love JJ, but I think he still needs a year or so to become a true ace. If you add someone like peavy/lowe/burnett the Braves will have a very solid rotation. And if JJ DOES step it up to ace level this year, it could be a pretty great rotation.

"I wouldn't be surprised too to see Ross play a little 1st until Krotchman finally grows a pair and becomes the hitter he was hyped up to be."

Insult Kotchman all you want. He was comparable to Morneau in 2007 offensively, just a season removed from severe illness, and is statistically the second best defensive 1B behind Pujols over the past 3 years. His AVG took a dive with the Braves mostly because of difficulties adjusting and being miscast as a cleanup hitter, but he actually significantly improved his walk rate.

"If you add someone like peavy/lowe/burnett the Braves will have a very solid rotation."

Only 2 of those guys really can qualify as an ace. Burnett has never been one.

For the guys pounding Vasquez, consider this. he was a strikeout/flyball pitcher in a hitter's park. Flyball pitchers are more successful at turner field than the cell because turner is a pitcher's park not a hitter's haven. And i expect kotchman to rebound this year and have an average close to .290-.300 and 20+ homers. Burnett is most likely the next piece and then i think we can see the braves start to take shape. A rotation consisting of Burnett, Jurrgens, Vasquez, Morton, and Reyes/Campillo is far from terrible and if just one of Morton and Reyes puts it together thats a strong staff

also good move by the braves to secure a quality backup for mccann. we cannot expect him to play as much as he did last season and hold up physically throughout his career, and this move helps to alleviate the frustration of having bmac on the bench

I think Frank Wren may be on his way to winning the executive of the year. I bet he is very quickly gaining the respect of GM's all around baseball. I think the time has gone where other teams wondered if they could pull one over on the "new guy" after JS left.

The Braves are quickly turning from an after thought to the best team in the NL East. I still think Peavy ends up in Atlanta before all is said and done. By August, we could see a team with a rotation of Peavy, Hudson, Jurrjens, Vazquez, Hanson/Campillo, an offensive core of Yunel/KJ/Chipper/McCann/Frenchie and a late inning tag team of Soriano and Gonzo. That thought is very scary for the NL East and the whole NL in general.

phils.... check out Javy's peripherals.... they are sick. Getting out of a launching pad and into the NL in a better pitchers park is going to do wonders. He will flourish in the NL under Cox. My guess is he is at worst a number 3 starter, with the potential for much more. Love the pickup.

sorry nrmax,

don't see it happening. Frank Wren when speaking about him was harkening back to his MONTREAL EXPOS days. Yes that franchise that doesn't exist north of the border anymore.

going back to his year in Arizona we blasted him as did the Marlins and I honestly think each offense (other than the Nats) is better this year than that one. He's a .500 pitcher with a 4.5 era to me in the NL as well.

If the Braves still had Mazzone, well then that might be a different story

The Braves plan to enter the season neck and neck with Pilly for the best bullpen in the NL East with Benett/Carlyle/Acosta/Soriano/Moylan/and Gonzo as well as Logan or Ohman(Ohman obviously being more appealing)which is a start of something the Braves didn't have last year. Their rotation relies fully on potential. If Vasquez and Jurrjens live to their potential and Hanson ends up there or the Braves get Greinke or Bailey then their rotation is pretty set in my opinion.

It all comes down to if the offense produces. Ross is huge especially if Norton resigns and even more if he dosen't. The Braves are still a solid OFer or two away from being taken seriously though in my opinion. They get that and I will REALLY be looking forward to next season.

insomniac,

i don't know about that. With the addition of Ceda, he and Lindstrom make a pretty good group in Florida.

Bullpen's are crazy. One year they're good the next they're crap. Offense will be key, but starting pitching needs to hold up to compete. That's what killed your Braves last year.

The Braves needed an innings eater and that's what they got in Vasquez. He is also under contract through 2010 for relatively little money (relative to the ridiculous contract the M's gave Carlos Silva, a comparable middle of the rotation innings eater.)

I am optimistic about the Ross signing. He is Babe Ruth compared to Corky Miller. I hope I never see him in the majors again...unless, of course, he is playing for the Mets!

Go Braves!
