« Lamb Re-Signs With Brewers | Main | Four Teams Inquire On Michael Young »
12:41pm: Marc Topkin heard chatter that the Rays and Cardinals are talking. Perhaps Ankiel or Ludwick could interest Tampa Bay.
Meanwhile Scott Lauber says the Cards may be interested in Madson as a potential closer.
8:36am: Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the Cardinals remain focused on short-term deals for starters. Possible names include Oliver Perez, Andy Pettitte, Brad Penny, and Randy Wolf. They'll meet with Wolf's agent by tomorrow afternoon.
John Mozeliak now seems open to a two or three-year deal for a reliever. He could trade an outfielder like Ryan Ludwick for a top guy, but shot down the idea of Ryan Madson. Makes no sense, Madson is only under team control for one more year. Schumaker and Chris Duncan are trade bait for Mozeliak.
8:28am: Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun says the Cards have interest in Blue Jays lefty Scott Downs. Downs is owed $7.75MM over the next two seasons.
8:01am: We know the Cardinals chatted with the Braves about Mike Gonzalez and Blaine Boyer. Gerry Fraley says they also had trade talks with the Phillies, hoping to trade an outfielder for a reliever. Rick Ankiel and Skip Schumaker are apparently popular with other teams.

it would be nice to see a schumaker for gonzalez trade :)
Posted by: Bleed Red | December 09, 2008 at 08:11 AM
Tim is up early, and up late. The most wonderful time of the year, eh?
Posted by: VAFriar | December 09, 2008 at 08:12 AM
Nothing better than red blood shot eyes to start off the day!

As a Card fan, I would rather trade Ankiel. Schu is too valuable being able to play solid def at all three positions. His offense was good last year too.
Posted by: hombrej | December 09, 2008 at 08:16 AM
Have the Cardinals said Ludwick is not available? Why not Gonzo for Ludwick?
Posted by: TommyL31 | December 09, 2008 at 08:16 AM
IF the phils were involved it would have to be for Ludwick I would think. Maybe Ludwick for Madson? one year left Boras client for one year left Boras client?
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 09, 2008 at 08:16 AM
trade ankiel at the deadline once his stock gets up a little bit. trade schumaker at a high point now..
Posted by: Bleed Red | December 09, 2008 at 08:18 AM
i really dont see ludwick leaving unless its for overpayment...its not like they are paying ludwick a ton of money...hes tied up for 3 more years and he plays above average defense..if he puts up anywhere near what he did last year by far the best steal in the majors
Posted by: Bleed Red | December 09, 2008 at 08:20 AM
I wouldn't trade Gonzalez at all. Makes no sense as he is going to be an important piece in Braves bullpen this year.
Ankiel for Boyer would make all the sense.
Posted by: BravesFanChris24 | December 09, 2008 at 08:22 AM
Ludwick is not one year away. He has 3 years of arb now. Ankiel is the Boras client with one year til' FA. I can live with trading Skip for a reliever, I cannot live with trading either of the other 2 for one. There are plenty of good options on the FA market.

MVPujols,
my bad. in rushing i confused the two. thanks for the clearing that up.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 09, 2008 at 08:35 AM
As a Phils fan, the only one I would hope we have any interest in would be Ludwick.
Ankiel and Schumaker are both left handed hitters and come nowhere close to Burrell as far as power and OBP.
My guess is Ludwick would be pricey though. If the Cards are asking for relievers, my guess is they would be looking at Madson, Durbin, or possibly Happ.

"Ankiel for Boyer would make all the sense."
For the Braves, yes. For the Cardinals, no. The Cards need a much better reliever coming back in the deal than Boyer.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 09, 2008 at 08:42 AM
I hope no one jumps on me for saying this, but I really think Gonzalez is a top 5-10 reliever in the league when healthy (huge when of course).
That could solve a lot of the bullpen issues for St. Louis and they have enough outfielders to swing Ankiel for him. I know it would hurt, but wouldn't having a mid 2's ERA guy closing games be worth it? I'm sure he'll net two 1st rounders like Ankiel as well.

"Ankiel for Boyer would make all the sense."
I'm sure the Cubs would trade Marquis back for Ankiel! Why isn't Hendry getting it done!!!! ;)
(that was a joke)
I am fairly certain Blaine Boyer is not going to bring back Rick Ankiel.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 09, 2008 at 08:53 AM
The Braves aren't trading Gonzalez for Ankiel, nor should they.
Posted by: FanOTheRumors2 | December 09, 2008 at 09:03 AM
Not sure I'd wanna get rid of Scott Downs, tho it would be a selling high move. I don't see how the 2 teams fit however.
Posted by: Devmac | December 09, 2008 at 09:19 AM
Other than Molina does the Cards have a decent Catching prospect?
Posted by: Larsen101 | December 09, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Bryan Anderson is the Cards top catching prospect.
Posted by: inthecards | December 09, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Larsen101, the Cards have Brian Anderson stuck in the minors.
Posted by: Rob | December 09, 2008 at 10:14 AM
I trade Downs for one of the Cards minor league 3rd basemen not named Wallace.
But other then trading for something which helps the Jays at a position of need, i would say hold on to Downs he is very valuable, especially since he may become a SP this year.

If the Cardinals sign Oliver Perez, I'll crap my pants in excitement. Ever since his 2.98 ERA, 200+ strikeout season with the Pirates, he's been one of my five favorite pitchers in the game.
Posted by: El Hombre | December 09, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Why don't the Braves try to center a package for Ludwick around Gonzo+prospects? And then go and sign Wood/Fuentes? Is Ludwick completely off the table or what? Ankiel doesn't seem to make much sense because of his contract situation and the fact that he hits LH (which the Braves FO seems to be vehemently against).

Oliver Perez? Don't the Cardinals already have the exact same pitcher in Kyle Lohse? They're both ticking timebombs. That season with the Pirates was a fluke.
I wonder if Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson, or Andy Sonnanstine would bring back Ryan Ludwick straight up.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 09, 2008 at 01:19 PM
Was posting earlier on Ankiel threads that the Rays and Cards should be talking about a Sonnastine or Jackson for Ankiel deal. Looks like they took my advice hahah
Those teams look like they match up perfect.
Posted by: jclay | December 09, 2008 at 01:21 PM
I think that if Duncan could help this kid with his mechanics (resulting in less walks), Oliver Perez could once again be that ~3.00 ERA, 200+ strikeout pitcher. Maybe I'm just an ignorant hopeful, though.
Posted by: El Hombre | December 09, 2008 at 01:26 PM
Im Pretty sure the Jays and Cards could match up in another trade...if the Jays could get their hands on this Bryan Anderson kid because i dont think the Jays really have much catching after thigpen since they traded Diaz kid to the Pirates for the Jose Bautista deal last summer
Posted by: Larsen101 | December 09, 2008 at 01:27 PM
Jays don't have anything behind Thigpen because Thigpen has fallen behind Arencibia and Jeroloman on their depth chart.
Posted by: Torgen | December 09, 2008 at 01:35 PM
thats why lol
