« Phillies Trying To Sign Moyer | Main | Odds and Ends: Kawakami, Max Ramirez, Lowell »
According to SI.com's Jon Heyman:
The Cubs, Rays, Dodgers and Angels are among teams that have expressed interest in star free-agent outfielder Bobby Abreu.
The Cubs are said to prefer Milton Bradley. The Rays met with Abreu's agents on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings. The California teams are new, I believe.

the dodgers? wtf? maybe they're thinking this will be an easier pickup than ramirez?
they already have so many outfielders...
are they going to trade pierre once they sign manny or another OF bat?
are they going to give jones another shot?

What about White Sox, yesterday it was reported that they were the frontrunners and all they had to do was trade Dye

Abreu is a solid player, dunno if I'd call him a star though.

what are we thinking as far as contract
my estimate is $10.5 a year over 3 years
anyone have any thoughts?

Tough, I thought the same thing when I saw this. The report on the Chisox rumor was in the NY Daily News, so Heyman may have a difference set of sources.

Abreu was a great #3 hitter but his defense makes you want to jump off a bridge

Angels seem to be rumored for just about every player on the market. They should be looking for free agents/trades for third or first base if Teixeira doesn't work out, not the outfield.

I hope Hendry can lock up Bradley real soon.

I think the Dodgers will only go after Abreu if Manny doesn't re-sign.
I think either way, with or without Manny, the Dodgers are going to try to deal Pierre.
Likely candidates would be the White Sox, Rangers or Cubs. They would probably need to eat like $9 mill of the remaining $27 mill to get it done but they would save $6 mill towards '09 in that scenario.
I think Jones will be given a shot to win a spot out of Spring Training but they are certainly not going to count on him.
Don't be surprised to see the Dodgers maybe kick the tires on Juan Rivera too. He's only 30 and had a very productive '06 before a freak leg injury sidelined him for '07 and part of '08.
If the Dodgers got him for 3yrs @ $12-$15 mill, that could be a real steal. He should be just entering his prime.

D-H Dodger Fan, no way do the Cubs bring back Pierre. You're kidding yourself if you think the Dodgers will be able to pawn him off on anyone who isn't desperate AND ridiculously out of date with modern statistics. I would guestimate that the Dodgers would just about need to eat the whole contract to get a team to take him, and even then he's not a net positive to the team that acquires him. He's just not a good player. If the Cubs actually liked him they wouldn't have let him go a couple years ago.
Interesting to see the Cubs going after Bradley. Normally I would stay away from players with his history but he seemed to make progress in controlling himself last year, perhaps he's finally maturing. He won't put up the same numbers as he did in TX but he's still a very good hitter. If he can stay healthy he would do a lot for the Cubs offense.
A lot of if's there, but I can see a good deal for both sides between Bradley/Cubs. If the money is right I say go for it Hendry.

FWIW, i heard bruce levine on espn radio in chicago last night say the abreu/white sox thing wasn't true. who knows with KW though. he's still got some speed, which they want, but his age isn't in keeping with what appears to be their philosophy this offseason. like i said, though, who knows with KW?
as far as the cubs go, i'm really warming to the bradley idea. he'd be just the sort of idiot that team needs in the clubhouse. they are way too uptight in there. of course health is always an issue, but i think it's a risk worth taking given his hitting upside and ability to play decent/solid defense. who knows, maybe lou and him are just crazy enough to hit it off, and he already gets along relatively well with gerald perry, so i've read...

Geez how many outfielders do the Dodgers need they already got Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones...If they can't get Manny just throw Jones out there i have a feeling he's gonna bounce back and have a better season in 09...I think the Angels or Mets will sign Abreu.

"Geez how many outfielders do the Dodgers need they already got Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones..."
Do you really think it's wise for the Dodgers to approach the offseason counting on contributions from Pierre and fatboy?
"If they can't get Manny just throw Jones out there i have a feeling he's gonna bounce back and have a better season in 09"
Agreed.
He might hit .200 instead of .158.

If the Cubs bring back Pierre I will hang myself from the left field foul pole. I think with Ibanez signing it is only a matter of time before Bradley signs with the Cubs.

"I think the Dodgers will only go after Abreu if Manny doesn't re-sign."
I think that is a given. Abreu would be a great fit for the Dodgers if both Kemp and Loney hit for more power. His OBP and speed fit right in with that team, and no one should be afraid of the LF short porch at Dodger Stadium, not even Abreu.
That said, I would still probably prefer a trade for Magglio

umm...has everyone forgotten about Adam Dunn??? I had heard if Ned doesnt get Manny, Dunn will be heavily looked into.
and yes i know Andruw Jones was horrible (even made me angry when he smiled when he struck out)...BUT...look at the positives...he cant get any worse? (lets pray not)...i think ALL Dodger fans hope he comes back at even half of his old self...weve been begging for power since 04
and here's a thought that NOBODY has talked about...can Loney play Left Field???...he used to be a pitcher and switched, so he is versatile...if so...we should land TEIXEIRA!!!...hes younger and plays the even better defense than Loney

In short, you can forget Teixiera in LA on his desire for contract length alone. FWIW, the Dodgers have worked Loney out in LF briefly; barring a highly unlikely trade for say, Fielder, he'll be 1B in LA for a number of years.
