Giants Rumors: Renteria, Howry

8:02pm: MLB.com's Chris Haft says the Giants accelerated their pursuit of Bob Howry now that the Cubs chose not to offer him arbitration.

6:55pm: The AP has an update on the Giants' pursuit of free agent shortstop Edgar Renteria, though there's not much new info.  The Giants and Renteria are discussing the parameters of a deal and he is their top option at short.  It makes sense that things will get moving now that Renteria failed to receive an offer of arbitration from the Tigers.

I hope the Giants sign him.

This can't happen fast enough for my taste.

I'm not sure why people would be so down on this deal. He would likely sign for something like 2/16, and that's not exactly a deal that would cripple the Giants.

They hardly have much in terms of good short term shortstop options, unless Burriss or Velez emerges as a solid everyday option.

Renteria mashed in the NL in 2007, and was a solid to good hitter over the course of the past few years. He should be able to post a 290/350/430 line at short, which would help add some stability to the lineup.

It wouldn't be the much needed power that team needs, but it's not the terrible deal some think it is.

"ha ha."

phils, you are quick to criticize but I actually think this could help them only if they sign him for two years AND get another more powerful infield bat. If midseason this proves to have been a terrible move, you can get back to me then, but for now it seems like it has good upside and little downside.

This will not help SF. They need a power bat (Teixeira) to help generate runs. I'll be the first to admit, Renteria has had some good years in the NL, but his defense and range continues to decline. This is another typical, bonehead Sabean move.

Signing Renteria to a 2 year contract would not be a bad move for the Giants. He would undoubtedly provide better production than they would get from Burriss and he wouldn't significantly limit additional free agent spending. He is also much less of an injury risk than Furcal, who would probably require a 4 year deal.

Personally I believe that Renteria should make a reunion with the Cardinals. They will respect him there and need him more than ever. No offense but instead of Rafael Furcal in the tags in should be Edgar Renteria.

If they were to sign Tex lets say, don't they still need a SS?

Leland,

part of my reason for my response to the signing is that most giants fans were dreading this. Yes he could be decent, but if they're spending this much on Renteria (who's at best an .260 hitter with 10hr's and 60 RBI's what are they going to spend on what they need. they'd be better served going with a Cesar Izturus or Nick Punto who'll have similar production and half the cost and improve other areas.)

philsWSchamps -

How is a .260 hitter at best? He had one of his worst years last year and he hit .270. Every other year of his career except for one (2001), he has hit .275 or above.

Additionally, he has never been an injury threat.

I'm not a big fan of signing Renteria but he would be the least risky option of all the free agent shortstops
my only hope is that if they get renteria we can trade for someone like Adrian Beltre or sign Adam Dunn or another big bat.
Bobby Howry would be a nice pick up too.

and Brandon W. Fisher
Teixeira will not come to SF as much as i want him to
he'll be with the angels or somewhere in the east coast

Where are the runs going to come from in SF? Clearly, they have the framework for a great pitching staff and a terrific farm system. A guy like Tex or Dunn would be a better fit than Renteria, who is really more of a role-player at this point in his career.

Agreed.

But, my feeling is Tex will never come to SF. Dunn could be a valid option if its a 2 or 3 year contract. maybe Burrel could play first????

.260 hitter at best, thats a bonehead comment.

A two year deal fits the Gaints well, not crippling at all and they need at least two years to develop the next shortstop (Noonan?). Way smarter play than Furcal if he does in fact get 4 (injury prone) years. Let Burris play second or continue his development in the minors if Frandsen wins the job.

I would then go after Beltre as well for some pop, the problem with Dunn is then Sandoval would have to take 3rd and you cannot have defense that poor at both corners. I think Sandoval has to just be able to focus on hitting and playing a respectable 1st base in 2009.

Beltre and Renteria is a solid left side, more power is still needed though, but there may not be too many ways to go about getting that while still giving the young guys time to play.

Scribblestone-

Velez can't play SS. He can hardly play 2nd. He has freakish speed and could develop into a decent bat but a SS he'll never be. His lousy defense cost Lincecum the ERA title.

I do like both these moves. Bullpen help and a veteran SS who can hit. If we added Dunn and a average starter this could be .500 team. Which is in the hunt out west.

maybe .260 is a "LITTLE" low, but he did have plenty of protection in his order in Detroit and did little with it. He had one of his worst years of his carrer and he gets 18 for 2? Big mistake. What's he going to do batting 6th in SF? Not 8 million dollars worth.

Saying renteria is at best a .260 hitter is crazy considering at his worst he hasent done that. I dont really think moving to the NL will help that much because the theres very good pitching in the NL these days. But hes still an above average hitter but below average defense. Were talking about a team signing a decent player, I dont think hes the "big splash".

I believe these 2 signings will help the Giants tremendously next season. Howry could help set up Closer Brian Wilson while rookies Alex Hinshaw and Sergio Romo work long relief. Renteria will not have the glove work that Vizquel had, but he would be a huge offensive upgrade over both Vizquel and Emmanuel Burris, who will now battle Kevin Frandsen at 2B. The Giants are also said to be pursuing 1B/OF Adam Dunn in order to boost their offense.

Renteria is clearly on the decline. Who knows if he'll hit .260 next year. He'll probably hit higher than .260 no matter where he goes, but .260 isn't outside the range of possibilities depending on how fast his decline is. That said, if the Giants sign him to a 2 year deal $8M per, it wouldn't kill them, but it would probably be a waste of money.

As for Howry, he's 35 and is coming off a horrible season. He may have a little bit left in the tank, and could have a bounceback year, but he could just as easily fall off the map. I wouldn't sign him to anything more than 2 years at $7M and preferably a 1 year deal with incentives and an option.

The Giants are close on Renteria... What are the chances the Colletti sweeps in a "steals" him for 5 years and 55 million like he did with Pierre. I think I just puked in my mouth a little bit!

My initial reaction to these rumors last week was pure anger. I mean, how stupid did Sabean have to be to not wait until after the arb deadline. Thank god that was false. But now that they have waited, and he was not offered arbitration, and I have had a few days to mull this over, it may not be as bad as it once seemed.

Now, Renteria is not the answer to the Giants problems, but they shouldn't be trying ti fix it all this year. IF, and it's still a big if, the Giants do get him on a 2 year deal, WITH the money being NO MORE than 17 million, this isn't a bad move. Manny Burriss may not be the answer for this year, but he deserves a shot at second and has shown every reason to be optimistic for his future.

My major problem is this: Twice in the last 2 days, Burriss' name has been thrown out there as possible trade bait if they can get renteria. Why is this a good thing. Renteria is not a long term thing. Emmanuel Burriss just played his first season above A ball, did it well, and has many years to develop a little more pop. Why should the Giants be trading their young positional talent for anything. The giants farm is much improved over the last few seasons but A) isn't deep at any position except pitcher B) All, and I mean 100% of their well regarded positional talent is no closer than high A ball at the end of the current season. Most are between 16-19 years old. With the Exception of Burriss, Sandoval, Ishikawa, and Schierholtz, the Giants don't have alot to fall back to until 2010 at the earliest. So once again, I say it's not supposed to be fixed this year. Don't trade Manny Burriss, give him one more year to develop.

Everyone who is a Giants fan should be sending a message to the team contact page.

and another reason I don't like this signing for the giants is the same reason I was annoyed as a Phils fan a couple years back when they signed Eaton for 8.5 million per vs Lilly for 10+ million per. Spend a little more and get a LOT better. Furcal is a much better player and likely SF fans will get an up close view of what they missed out on across the bay.

bet ya he wants to sign with the Giants so he doesnt have to face Lincecum.............At this point i really dont think that Giants fans should be moaning about anything as anything is an improvement over what they have..........and to those who are like sign tex.......really?

As some of you have said, the team's minor league talent trove is still 2-3 seasons away from being on the major league roster. The team wants to be competitive now in a weak division to take advantage of Cain and Lincecum's hard work over the next two seasons. If they can get Burrell for 1B and Renteria for SS for a combined $20 million per year over the next two seasons, and still have Burriss/Frandsen for 2B, why not do it? Both signings will improve the offense over what they have now, and the team can play Pablo at 3B. Getting Burrell, Renteria, Sandoval, a healthy Fred Lewis, and Molina's bat into the lineup every day would be a good step upwards for 2009.
